  • Multiplying the Division of Labour: Functional Differentiation of the Next Key Variables in Management Research

    In this article, we draw on theories of social differentiation to show that functional differentiation is not about the division of work and organization, but rather about a multiplication of horizons for decision-making. We argue that a systematic management of functional differentiation makes organizations smarter and more flexible. We corroborate this claim by demonstrations of how a functional approach to functional differentiation facilitates the design of new or the further development of well-established management tools and research agendas in fields such as entrepreneurship, strategy, and human resource management.

  • Project Neptune - Strategic Assessment of Sugarcane Industry in Barbados

    A landmark project in our practice was the assistance to the Inter-American Development Bank (“IDB”), the largest multilateral source of financing for the Latin America and the Caribbean region, in performing a comprehensive strategic and economic assessment of the sugarcane industry in Barbados. IDB had to evaluate the opportunity to lend money to the Government of Barbados for restructuring its the sugarcane industry.

    The work was structured in five workstreams:

    A landmark project in our practice was the assistance to the Inter-American Development Bank (“IDB”), the largest multilateral source of financing for the Latin America and the Caribbean region, in performing a comprehensive strategic and economic assessment of the sugarcane industry in Barbados. IDB had to evaluate the opportunity to lend money to the Government of Barbados for restructuring its the sugarcane industry.

    The work was structured in five workstreams:

    1. Country analysis (focus on macroeconomics);
    2. Market/Commercial analysis (focus on the existing and future potential demand for sugar + ethanol and the potential for restructuring the whole the sugarcane industry in Barbados);
    3. Operational review (focus on project’s operational assumptions, profitability, supply/value chain);
    4. Environmental (focus on understanding potential impact of the project in the environment) ; and
    5. Social (focus on assessing the potential social impacts of the project in the lives of Barbados citizens).

    Complex project with several stakeholders and tensions between different actors of society, including government, representatives of social movements, of the sugarcane industry, of the tourism, leisure and real estate sectors, environmentalists, NGOs and various subject matter experts.

    KPMG supported IDB to shape its lending strategy and designing solutions based on the strategic options analysis described in our study.

The publication also covered arts and entertainment and culture. Paralelos helped to shed light on some of the prominent emerging Brazilian writers of the first decade of the 21st century, including Antonia Pellegrino, Bruna Beber, Cecilia Giannetti, Christiane Tassis, Estevão Avezedo, Julian Fucks, JP…

    Founder and managing editor of Paralelos, one of the first fully digital magazines in Brazil dedicated to literature, arts and culture, particularly focused in promoting Brazilian new writing. The publication also covered arts and entertainment and culture. Paralelos helped to shed light on some of the prominent emerging Brazilian writers of the first decade of the 21st century, including Antonia Pellegrino, Bruna Beber, Cecilia Giannetti, Christiane Tassis, Estevão Avezedo, Julian Fucks, JP Cuenca, Mariel Reis, Marcelo Moutinho, Paloma Vidal, Paulo Scott, Tatiana Salem Levy, Veronica Stigger, among others. The magazine was recognized by scholars and professional critics as the most influential specialized vehicle covering literature that contributed to shape and transform the landscape of new Brazilian writing in the first 00's decade. An anthology of texts from Paralelos was published by Editora Agir ("Paralelos – 17 Contos da Nova Literatura"), a branch of Ediouro. We partnered with Flip (Festa Literária Internacional de Parati) to run an annual new writing workshop with full sponsorship for book publishing. The "Veredas da Literatura" initiative was named after Graciliano Ramos. The team of Paralelos also provided specialized content to the online portal of Jornal O Globo ("Globo Online").
