    "USS GEORGIA hurtled through the Pacific hundreds of feet below the surface, and I was at her helm as Officer of the Deck. Our submarine’s massive battery was almost drained, common after a day of intense training, when I received an emergency report that a failed instrument had shut down the reactor. Without an operational reactor or fresh air for the diesel generator, the ship had to rely solely on its nearly depleted battery for electrical power. Unless I took decisive action, GEORGIA would go dead in the water. Consequently, I ordered all non-vital electrical loads switched off and turned my focus to driving our 18,000-ton warship to periscope depth to snorkel on the diesel.

    The sonar team reported that they could hear numerous ships, so I conducted several tactical maneuvers to estimate range, course, and speed of each. The results were disconcerting. One ship was close, and it would take skill to avoid hitting it. With the battery quickly discharging though, I dared not wait to reevaluate. I chose a course and ordered the Diving Officer to bring the ship to periscope depth. As we came shallow, the diesel started, and the battery was unloaded. I peered out the periscope and watched a supertanker pass safely down our side.

    As I coordinated the efforts of the crew to “fight the ship,” I was invigorated. Performing a successful approach to periscope depth under these intense circumstances was deeply rewarding. Afterwards, when I wondered why I felt excited rather than scared or upset, I realized that I thrive on working with a team to accomplish difficult goals and performing well in stressful situations."
