Discussions around a power imbalance within climate philanthropy are both necessary and important, but have also led to the rise of a problematic and simplistic narrative that philanthropic organisations in the Global South must be ‘empowered’. Erika Miller from WINGS and Laura Señan Cagiao from Fundación Avina highlight the importance of recognising Global South philanthropies’ leadership in addressing #ClimateChange. Earlier this week, WINGS participated in the Civil Society #C20 and Thinktanks #T20 mid-term meetings in Brazil, so the worldwide philanthropy network could amplify civil society voices and represent the giving sector. The meeting concluded with C20 recommendations to the #G20 on socio-economic and development issues. Benjamin Bellegy , WINGS' Executive Director, shared some key reflections on the C20 engagements, highlighting that philanthropy engages with transformative agendas across various policy areas and collaborates with diverse actors of all sizes in North and Global Majority South to achieve on-the-ground impact. Through support for civil society's work, #philanthropy is addressing the polycrisis and effecting systemic change by reaching marginalised local groups and amplifying their voices in policy processes. However, supportive regulatory conditions are essential for greater impact to improve inequality, health, and the delivery of the SDGs. Governments must remove existing barriers to trusting partnerships with philanthropy. Upholding civic space is crucial for improving policymaking for G20 countries. Philanthropy is an intermediary bridge-builder, bringing diverse voices across contexts together and enabling community-led solutions to complex challenges. Meaningful engagement with civil society, including philanthropic actors, is vital for addressing pressing global and national issues. As we continue to advocate for inclusive and impactful philanthropy, it's clear that collaboration and supportive regulatory environments are key to driving systemic change.
