Understanding the history of carbon dioxide emissions reveals the magnitude of the climate challenge we face today. In 1850, global CO2 emissions were estimated to be as low as 200 million metric tons annually. Over more than 150 years of industrialization and economic expansion, emissions have increased dramatically, reaching around 36 billion metric tons per year by 2022. Originally led by North America and Europe, the top emitters of CO2 have changed significantly over time. These numbers illustrate how the geographical sources of CO2 have shifted significantly, reflecting changes in the global economy and the ongoing challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The brief decline during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the potential for change but also revealed our persistent dependence on fossil fuels. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 is crucial for mitigating the impacts of climate change. This goal requires coordinated global efforts.
