Popularity

In 1999, 4 million Americans were using personal trainers but in 2012 this figure was closer to 6.5 million (IHRSA, 2012).   Although most health clubs offer personal training, growth has not come from one-on-one training but rather small group training (SGT) or small group personal training (SGPT) (McCall, 2012).

What’s the Difference

The traditional model of personal training has the trainer working on the classic one-to-one model or the semi-private model (a maximum of three clients). In contrast, the SGT model enables the personal trainer to work with 4-10 clients at once.

Advantages

Many US and UK based gyms and personal trainers are now offering SGT and reasons for growth include:

  • A more economical product for the consumer (lower price point);
  • More efficient for the club and trainer;
  • Lower costs (for consumer and training provider);
  • Higher revenues (lower price point but more clients);
  • A response to boot camp group-based training; and
  • It also offers the group experience mentioned previously in the main page.
