1.0 Introduction

This article provides an overview of the recruitment and selection process for those wishing to join the Irish Reserve Defence Forces (RDF) (na hÓglaigh Cúltaca).

2.0 Organisation of the RDF

Restructured in 2005, the RDF is organised into the:

  • First Line Reserve comprised of former members of the Permanent Defence Force (PDF); and
  • Second Line Reserve comprised of the Army Reserve (Cúltaca an Airm) and the Naval Service Reserve (Cúltaca na Seirbhís Cabhlaigh).

3.0 Outline of the RDF Recruitment & Selection Process

There are a number of steps in the recruitment and selection process for joining the RDF.

  • Online Application:
    • Candidates can only apply via the official website.
    • Army Reserve candidates must only select 1 of the 26 locations on their application.
    • Naval Service Reserve candidates must only select only 1 of the 4 locations on their application.
  • Qualifications:
    • There are no formal education qualifications to join the RDF as a Recruit.
    • With the exception of age limits, the criteria for enlistment to the RDF are the same as the PDF with regard to:
      • Fitness assessment;
      • Medical examination; and
      • Security clearance.
  • Age:
    • Candidates must be 18 years of age or above and under the age of 35 on the closing date for receipt of applications.
  • Fitness Testing:
    • RDF candidates undertake the same fitness assessment as PDF personnel.
    • Candidates are required to take along a certificate from their general practitioner stating that they are fit to attempt the fitness assessment.
  • Interview:
    • Candidates who successfully complete fitness testing will be invited to an interview.
  • Medical Exam.
  • Security Clearance.

Candidates who successfully complete all of the above steps will be attested into the RDF receiving their military number and uniform over the next few weeks.
