Perfect families have the most to hide…

I feel so lucky to live in a gorgeous house with my precious daughter on Riverside Road, surrounded by green hills and well-tended gardens. I’m just across from the
Taylors, who were a second family to me when I was growing up. But late at night, I spot someone in the house across the street. Someone who shouldn’t be there…

Lily Taylor and I are best friends and closer than sisters, but life in our idyllic neighbourhood comes to a shuddering halt when I find Lily’s father murdered in his own bed. As I break the news to Lily, I swear to her that I’ll do everything I can to help her family. Who could possibly have done this?

I tell the police, but while they’re trying to find the killer, I start getting threatening notes that leave me shaking with fear. Then someone throws a brick through my eleven-year-old daughter Cassie’s bedroom window, covering her in shards of broken glass. As I stand in her wrecked bedroom, I make a choice.
I am desperate to help Lily get justice, but my daughter’s safety has to come first.

Even when I stop helping with the investigation, the messages keep coming. Someone knows what I saw, and I’m terrified they’ll come for my little girl next.
But they’ve underestimated me.

No matter how far I have to go, I’ll always protect the people I love…

An astonishingly gripping psychological thriller with a truly shocking twist from USA Today bestseller Jill Childs! If you love Sally Hepworth, The Woman in the Window or Liane Moriarty, you’ll adore this up-all-night, addictive thriller.

Another great psychological suspense novel from @Bookoutureaudio. I listened to the audiobook thanks to the publisher and Netgalley. I've been reading (and listening ) to a lot of books from Bookouture, and each one has impressed me. This one is by Jill Childs, an author I had not read before, and tells the story of two families who lived across the street from another, and a LOT of secrets! A lot of secrets. It begins with a murder, which our main character, Anna, discovers when she sees a light that should not be on in her neighbor's house. This leads to the gruesome discovery of a murder of her best friend's father. All that is in the typical description of the book. Who killed Dr. Taylor? That's our initial question. But we have other questions - like who is the father of Anna's child Cassie? And then there is the hit and run causing a death at the very beginning of the novel!

The House Across the Street has five primary characters. Anna, her ten year old daughter Cassie; her brother Tim; Anna's best friend Lilly (and daughter of the dead doctor) and her brother George. But there is tension on many levels, and a lot of secrets, which you will need to sort out on your own! The book primarily uses the perspective of the two main characters, Anna and Lilly; but has a few other chapters that are from the perspective of other characters, including Anna's ten year old daughter, and her former boyfriend from a decade ago - who might be her daughter's father. Yes. Multiple story lines. And it's a book you want to pay attention to, to see if you can figure out who the answers to all the questions. I'll admit there were several things I didn't see coming!

An enjoyable book, either in audio or print. I listened to about 2/3 of it, and used Kindle Unlimited to read part. Good stuff. Jill Childs will be on my list for future reads.

The House Across The Street by Jill Childs

The House Across The Street is a thriller with twists that will keep you engaged until the very end. Anna and Lily have lived across the street for many years, and their lives have been so intertwined that they are closer than best friends, but feel like sisters. Sometimes it’s the family we choose and not who we are born with, that give us the most support. But when Anna finds her best friend Lilys dad murdered, she becomes embroiled in a situation mixed with danger, and old secrets coming back to haunt her. When the killer threatens her daughter Cassie, and her ex boyfriend, possibly Cassie’s father returns to town, she is at a loss on where to turn. But secrets come out, and the path of destruction is wider than she could have anticipated. Who is the killer? And why target a well loved doctor?

This book was fast paced. I enjoyed Kristin Atherton, the narrator. She was engaging and kept your interest until the end. I liked the twists but was irritated at some parts, not wanting to spoil anything I won’t reveal them, but it will become obvious when you read it. While I liked the story the end really irritated me, again can’t say why because it would spoil plot points.

For me this was a three and a half rounded up to 4. It definitely kept my interest and while I suspected some of the plot twist, I was surprised at other parts. This was an enjoyable read and I will definitely look for more books by Jill Childs. Fans of Nicole Trope and Daniel Hurst would love the twisted journey in this fast pace ride through secrets and murder.

Late one night, as Anna looks out the window of her beautiful home, she observes a strange flashing light and a dark figure moving up the stairs in the Taylor house across the street. She immediately becomes alarmed. The elderly Dr. Taylor lives alone and may be in danger. When Anna enters the house to check on him, she finds that he has been stabbed to death.
The doctor’s daughter, Lilly, is Anna’s best friend. Anna immediately comes to her aid and vows to help find out who committed this horrible crime. After Anna tells the police what she knows, her life is suddenly in danger. She begins to receive threatening notes. The killer knows what she saw. When someone throws a brick into Anna’s daughter Carrie’s bedroom window, shattering the child with glass, Anna stops helping with the investigation. She is desperate to help Lilly find the killer, but her daughter’s life comes first. This is a mind-blowing, gripping psychological thriller with endless twists and turns. The grand finale is an ending that will blow you away.

"The House Across the Street" by Jill Childs is an enthralling psychological thriller that keeps you hooked from the first page to the last. Set in a picturesque neighborhood, the story centers around the mysterious murder of Lily Taylor's father and the ensuing chaos that disrupts the seemingly perfect lives of the residents on Riverside Road.

Childs masterfully weaves a tale of suspense and tension, with the protagonist finding herself entangled in a web of secrets and danger after witnessing a stranger in the house across the street. The characters are well-developed, particularly the close-knit bond between the protagonist and Lily, which adds emotional depth to the narrative. The author's skillful portrayal of a mother's fierce determination to protect her daughter amidst escalating threats is both gripping and heart-wrenching.

The novel excels in building an atmosphere of fear and paranoia, with unexpected twists that keep the reader guessing until the very end. However, some plot points feel slightly predictable, and a few characters could have been fleshed out more to enhance the story further.

Overall, "The House Across the Street" is a compelling read with a truly shocking twist that will leave you questioning the nature of trust and the lengths one will go to protect their loved ones. Fans of Sally Hepworth, The Woman in the Window, or Liane Moriarty will find this thriller to be a satisfying and addictive addition to their collection.

Thank you NetGalley and Jill Childs for the ARC read

Loved this story! The characters are just normal everyday folk but the story is extraordinary. Every time I thought I had it worked out, I was completely wrong! I had to keep reading to try and work out what on earth was going on. Turns out that there are multiple layers of back stories, and it was such fun uncovering them all. I definitely recommend this book.
