Last week, Stuart Ecuyer and I were invited by Sebastian Stein to deliver a key note speech on Citizen Centric and Civic AI, to a group of Professors and Post Graduate Students from Bristol, Southampton and Amsterdam Universities and other Industry, Government Stakeholders. In our world where AI technology is more advanced than the legislation to regulate, govern and control its impact, it is more important than ever that we purpose this technology to benefit all. What if we think differently to make technology more inclusive? Instead of building on data that has been captured a million times before, why don’t we put people first? ·        How many times this week have you provided data to a website or app? ·        How can we make capturing and managing data easier for all? ·        Do we need to fill in endless forms with information which is often irrelevant? What about the people who have accessibility needs and struggle to provide data, either due to a disability, lack of access to connected devices or through literacy or language barriers. What if we were to capture and store the information once, in an accessible format, secure it and provide the ability to restrict or remove information. We could think about data and custodianship differently. If we think in terms of ‘ability’ instead of disability, we improve society for everyone.    ·        1.3 billion, 16% of the global population are disabled. ·        Collectively disabled people have approximately $1.2T annual disposable income, (more than the GDP of the Netherlands, Switzerland and Taiwan) ·        There is approximately 7% loss of GDP due to exclusion worldwide. AI-based approaches advise human decision-makers who should be released on bail, whether it is a good time to discharge a patient from a hospital and whether a specific student is at risk to fail a course. Such an extensive use in AI in decision making came with a range of protentional problems that have been extensively studied over the last few years. Recognition of these problems motivated a rapid rise of research on “human-centered AI”, which attempted to address and minimize the negative effects of using AI technologies. Among the ideas of human-centered AI is user control - engaging users in affecting AI decision making to prevent possible errors and biases. In my talk, I will focus on the application of user control in one popular area of AI application, adaptive information access. Adaptive information access systems such as personalized search and recommender systems attempt to model their users to help them in finding the most relevant information. Yet, user modeling and personalization mechanisms might not always work as expected resulting in errors, biases, and suboptimal behavior. Combining the decision power or AI with the ability of the user to guide and control it brings together the strong sides of artificial and human intelligence and could lead to better results. In this talk, I will review the work of our team and the broader research community focused on adding various kinds of user control to adaptive information access systems and discuss lessons learned, prospects, and challenges of this direction of research.

The sudo and su utilities represent a critical privilege boundary, which is why we have been working to rewrite them in the memory safe Rust language with partners at Tweede golf and Ferrous Systems GmbH. Earlier this year, we asked Ruben Nijveld from the Tweede golf team to share his perspective on one of the greatest challenges we faced when developing software that can be widely adopted: Rust crate dependencies. In the March blog post, Ruben shares, “When sudo-rs development started, we added several dependencies using Rust's crates ecosystem to quickly ramp up development. During development we accrued approximately 135 transitive (direct and indirect) dependencies. Why does computational power (known as 'compute') matter so much for #ArtificialIntelligence? Let our Foresight Analyst Daan Juijn explain: "When it comes to developing the next generation of AI systems, all the leading companies are betting on compute to push them over the edge, so the race is on to secure as much of it as they can. Tether will unveil a NEW CLASS of DIGITAL ASSETS on Monday 17th June. Says Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino. SMART move or #DISTRACTION? 🤨 Looking forward to Monday! 🤩⚡️⚡️⚡️ It’s not clear exactly what #digital assets will be announced on Monday, but we do know that they will not be the latest in a long line of digital assets launched by the stablecoin giant. Problem MiCAR regulation? 🥺 Seems Tether needs some good news. Under the EU MiCA regulation, Tether will not be able to operate in the European Union market as it used to have. MiCA requires it to follow strict criteria for E-money token (EMT) issuers, such as obtaining authorization as an electronic money institution or credit institution and audits. And Tether has not been audited. Ever. Largest stablecoin 😆 Tether is by far the largest stablecoin. Its 24-hours trading volume exceeds Bitcoin's. However, 112 billion USDT market valuation never saw an audit, so we are not clear how stable the coin actually is. According to stable coin rating agency bluechip.org of Benjamin Levit Tether is still rated with thrid-lowest rating of "D"! 😇 Tether is investing $1 billion Bloomberg reported yesterday that Tether also moves ahead to invest over $1 billion in the next 12 months. They intend to target transformative deals in AI, biotech, and alternative financial infrastructure. Let's see what comes. Previous stable coin projects Tether has in the past created stables for other currencies like the Euro, and the Mexican Peso, however, with limited success. The most surprising stable coin was the "Offshore Yuan Tether", which has been launched in collaboration with Zhao Dong. Dong was once one of the most prominent over-the-counter traders in China, and had previously disclosed that he was a Tether shareholder. But first, let's see what happens on Monday! What about #Aristotle & #ArtificialIntelligence ❓ What about it then ❓ The past year, I have been attending, either on-site or online, ever more events (conferences, seminars, roundtables) about the effects of #AITechnology in our everyday lives and the regulatory framework around it. However, one of the most interesting events happening in Greece, is the 'The Lyceum Project: AI Ethics with Aristotle' – a unique one-day conference hosted by the Institute for Ethics in AI of University of Oxford, in partnership with Stanford University and Greece's National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos"​ and the World Human Forum. Supported by the unwavering commitment of the The Patrick J. Recently, I was lucky to stumble across https://practical-ai.nl/, an organisation dedicated to public AI education (especially focusing on practical use cases of it). I just finished attending a webinar on AI tools that assist across the various stages of candidate selection and talent acquisition processess. I was positively surprised by not only the clear and comprehensive structure of the event but also the wide variety of presented tools. An aspect that particularly impressed me was that multiple of the selected tools were clearly routed on a rigorous scientific foundation AND are also subjected to continuous testing, focusing on both their effectiveness and verifying their ethical value! Sadly, this is something that cannot yet be said for all AI applications in this field... Thus, I am very happy to see such companies being highlighted at this event. Finally, I truly appreciate the openness and willingness of the speakers to also engage with the critical and technical questions of the audience, partially even in-depth, making it truly feel like an educational event instead of just an elaborate ad-block haha SO, IN SHORT: If you are interested in practical applications of AI, I'd definitely recommend checking out their website, https://practical-ai.nl/, and giving one of their (FREE :D) webinars a try. At least I will most certainly continue to do so!
