Is Gen AI just a hype, or is it a genuine game-changer? Yesterday, Julien Hobeika, Partner at EQT Ventures, had the honor of moderating a discussion on the topic of GenAI in healthcare, at HLTH Europe in Amsterdam. The debate highlighted its undeniable transformative potential, especially in drug discovery, administrative efficiency, and clinical workflows. The panelists provided concrete examples of how GenAI is impacting researchers, pharma companies, patients, and healthcare providers, underscoring its role in creating a more efficient and effective healthcare ecosystem. But this all does come with a notice of caution. Prioritizing responsible implementation and use, as well as high-quality data and thoughtful regulation, are all crucial aspects of GenAIs success in the field moving forward. 🚀 Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR) releases the latest data on cancer diagnoses for 2022 and incidence estimates for 2023! 📊 Key Insights from 2022: Total Diagnoses: 76,220 Belgians received a new cancer diagnosis. o Males: 41,774 o Females: 34,446 Age Factor: 64% of diagnoses were in patients aged 65 or older. Exciting news! 🎉 After rigorous negotiations, the European Health Data Space (EHDS) has been adopted in the European Parliament’s plenary session, just in time before the #Europeanelections and the new mandate. 🗳️ 🇪🇺 What can the EHDS bring to healthcare in Europe? 🏥 This proposal has three defining objectives ✅:  - Allowing data-sharing to enhance patient care.  - Setting the rules for health records systems and wellness applications offered on the market.  - Harnessing the potential of health data to drive research and innovation in healthcare.  🔍 Let’s take a closer look at some of the key provisions: - The final agreement includes the right for individuals to opt out from sharing their electronic health data for secondary purposes. However, Member States may override the opt-out decisions in specific situations of public health interest.  - Member States have the flexibility to implement additional safeguards for highly sensitive data, such as full genome sequences, biobanks, and wellness application data.   - In contrary to the original Commission proposal, the final text introduces a specific article dedicated to safeguarding intellectual property rights and trade secrets.  - Storage and processing of personal health data will be performed in the EU in principle, with exemptions for territories covered by an adequacy decision subject to Article 45 GDPR.  - A self-certification scheme for the electronic health records system is to be placed on the market, through a digital testing environment to be developed by the European Commission.  What’s next? 🤔 While this crucial milestone has been achieved, the agreement will need to go through legal-linguistic translation to refine the language and legal aspects of the text. This means the new Parliament and Council are expected to vote on the final version of the text after summer. The EU institutions are aiming for formal adoption of the file in Q4 2024. 🍂📅 The Regulation will apply two years after entering into force. Multi4 Medical receives 2.5 MEUR from EIC Accelerator, Horizon Europe Multi4 Medical, a pioneering health tech startup, has been awarded a 2.5 MEUR grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator under the Horizon Europe program. This funding is aimed at accelerating the market entry of their groundbreaking surgical instrument for the diagnosis and treatment of urinary bladder cancer. The Multi4 system is a revolutionary multipurpose instrument designed to streamline and enhance the process of bladder cancer diagnostics and treatment. It integrates four key functions: applying local anesthesia, innovatively taking tissue samples, automatically transporting these samples, and cauterizing or stopping bleeding. This comprehensive approach allows for a less invasive, quicker, and more patient-friendly treatment process that can be performed in an outpatient setting without the need for general anesthesia or extensive surgical preparations. The technology is applicable in other forms of cancer and thus has the potential to revolutionize care for millions of patients worldwide. Through the HealthChain I3 project, co-funded by the European Commission, Surgical Hospital Rožna dolina aims to address the MEPRO (Smart mobile phone application for self-assessment of mental distress) challenge. ℹ️ Challenge description ℹ️ Detecting and addressing #mental distress before and after surgery, which can signal underlying #medical issues post-discharge, presents challenges due to its subjective nature. While various signs and indicators may suggest #distress, individuals often conceal their feelings, making detection difficult. Existing pre-screening systems for #mentalhealth aim to identify at-risk individuals across different settings, yet there is a gap for a user-friendly, Slovene-language mobile application tailored to connect mental distress with potential medical conditions, essential for post-operative care. 👏 Last week, the European Parliament adopted a regulation for the creation of the European Health Data Space (#EHDS) with a focus on empowering citizens and advancing healthcare research.  The EHDS has two main aims:   ✅ placing citizens at the centre of #healthcare by giving them control over their #data to obtain better healthcare across the EU   ✅ opening up data for #research and public health uses   💡 This initiative holds the possibility of significantly improving patient care, including for people living with #diabetes, and is a core component of creating a strong and resilient European Health Union.   ❗ However, addressing patients’ and HCPs’ digital literacy is crucial for maximising effectiveness and reducing health #inequalities.    🤔 What’s next?   The regulation is now awaiting formal adoption by the Council of the European Union and is expected to be published in autumn 2024, marking a significant step toward a more resilient European Health Union.  ➡ Read our full article on the EHDS: https://lnkd.in/gPXbZiWu
