  • 🗝 Does Your Gut Bacteria Hold the Key to Opening the Door to Universal Blood? 🩸 Every year, blood transfusions save millions of lives, but ensuring the correct ABO blood group match between donor and recipient is critical to prevent severe immune reactions. The ABO blood groups differ due to specific antigens on their surface, and mismatched transfusions can trigger the recipient’s immune system to attack the foreign antigens. Blood types A and B have additional antigens compared to type O, making type O the universal donor, particularly crucial in emergencies when the patient’s blood type is unknown. 👩🔬 Exciting new research published in, Nature Microbiology, offers a groundbreaking solution: converting A and B-type RBCs into universally accepted O-type through enzyme treatment. The initial attempts at creating such ECO (Enzyme Converted to O) blood faced challenges due to residual antigens. 🦠 However, a recent study discovered that enzymes from the gut bacteria Akkermansia muciniphila can effectively remove these problematic antigens. This bacterium, which naturally degrades intestinal mucins sharing the same ABO antigens as RBCs, offers a promising source of the necessary enzymes. 💉 By leveraging these enzymes, scientists successfully converted type A and B RBCs into a safer, universally transfusable form. This advancement holds the potential to revolutionize blood transfusions, ensuring better compatibility and saving more lives in critical situations! 🥕 Here at Karott we are excited about this research as it combines two of our favorite subjects #MedicalInnovation with #gutbacteria! #BloodTransfusion #UniversalBlood #HealthcareAdvances #ScientificResearch

  • 🥗 Diets are like fads—always changing! Some will leave you puzzled, a few have some science behind them, and others can be seriously dangerous! 🏛 Since ancient times people have used strange dieting techniques to try to achieve different effects for their looks and health. Often with dangerous consequences. Here are some of the strangest historical diets we have heard of: ❌ 𝗪𝗘 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗔𝗡𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗅 ❌ 🚬 𝗖𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁: Back in the early 1900s, a few sneaky tobacco companies tried to sell cigarettes as the latest weight loss craze! They claimed nicotine could trick your brain into curbing your appetite. 🌱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁: This diet takes a turn from bizarre to terrifying by using non-food items to curb hunger. People would dip cotton balls in juice or other liquids and eat them. The idea was to feel full without consuming calories. Spoiler alert: this diet is super dangerous! 😴 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁: The Sleeping Beauty diet, popularized by Elvis, had people popping sleep meds like Xanax to snooze their way to weight loss. The idea? More sleep means less time to eat. But beware—this diet is as risky as it sounds! 👓 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁: The Vision Diet has you sporting blue-tinted glasses during meals. The idea is that the blue hue makes food look less appetizing, so you'll eat less. On the bright side, at least this one isn't dangerous! 🐛 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁: This wild diet involves swallowing a pill containing a tapeworm egg. Once the egg hatches, the tapeworm sets up shop in your body, munching away on some of the calories you consume. Sounds like a horror movie plot, right? Dieting is ineffective because it prioritizes short-term restrictions over sustainable lifestyle changes. Many diets are overly restrictive, leading to nutrient deficiencies, slowed metabolism, and feelings of deprivation that make them hard to maintain. This cycle often results in weight regain and undermines long-term health goals. 👍 That is why only through eating a variety of foods, in the right proportions, to get all the nutrients your body needs to function at its best can you truly achieve sustainable long-term health goals!

  • 🥗 Can diet and environmental changes play a role in improving autism symptoms? 🛏 📈 Autism has been increasing at an outstanding rate across the globe, which has led many to look for new ways to address it. 🔬 In a new study, researchers studied twins who were diagnosed with Level 3 severity ASD, who required substantial support due to limited communication, repetitive behaviors, difficulty with transitions, and significant gastrointestinal issues. A parent-driven, personalized, multidisciplinary therapeutic intervention focused on modifying environmental and lifestyle factors was undertaken. 👍 Within several months, notable improvements were observed, with Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) scores dropping from 76 to 32 for one twin and from 43 to 4 for the other. This case offers encouraging evidence of how a personalized, multidisciplinary approach targeting modifiable environmental and lifestyle factors such as diet can have profound effects. 🥕 Here at Karott’, we are excited to see new research like this in the fields of #diet and #health!

  • #SOPK 𝗖𝗮 𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 ? • ⚔ 𝗜𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆? Yes, you read that right! Carbon monoxide (CM), the odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that regularly causes poisoning, sometimes fatally, could become a new weapon in the fight against obesity. 👩🔬 At least, that's what emerges from the work of a team of researchers at INSERM in France. Of course, it's not a question of inhaling carbon monoxide to the point of feeling ill. Their approach is quite different... 🔎 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗅 CM is naturally produced in small quantities in the body, notably during the breakdown of hemoglobin. Earlier work has already shown that CM plays a role in regulating body temperature. This time, researchers administered a molecule (CORM-401) to mice, resulting in a slight increase in CM, which could be observed in the animals' stools, as well as in their intestinal microbiota. After receiving CORM-401, mice exposed to a fattening diet gained less weight than the control mice. In addition, they had fewer metabolic disorders than the others. 🔬 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗅 Researchers showed that this effect of limiting weight gain was associated with numerous changes in the intestinal microbiota. CM had the effect of normalizing the composition of the intestinal microbiota, microbiota which is disrupted in the case of obesity. 🦠 More than twenty bacterial strains associated with obesity are modified by CM, including an increase in Akkermansia muciniphila, whose beneficial metabolic effects have already been reported in both animals and humans. No adverse effects were recorded during this experience. Researchers are continuing their work with the hope of being able to conduct clinical studies after safety has been demonstrated. 🥕 Karott is here to keep you updated on all the surprising yet captivating research! #health #nutrition #obesity #microbiota #guthealth #Carbonmonoxide

  • 🚨 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝘁 🚨 50% of people voted, "None of the above." The runner-up was "Vinegar" with 25% of the votes. The correct answer was "None of the above." We are happy to see at least half of the voters get this correct! 🚫 No foods burn fat, make you lose weight more quickly, or increase your metabolism enough to affect weight loss. 🌶 Even if pepper contains a substance named capsaicin that have low thermogenic effects, it’s too small to have an impact on the fat mass. 🥗 Diets that focus on single foods, like those mentioned in our poll, are restrictive and lack the nutrients the body needs. They're also unsustainable, and any weight loss may result from calorie restriction and likely will come back once you discontinue the diet. Share these results with friends and don't be tricked by fad diets that focus on single foods! 👍 #health #nutrition #diet #faddiets

  • 🤔 Is Ashwagandha a safe “adaptogen”? #Ashwagandha is one of the so-called adaptogenic plants, a very trendy concept... It supposedly places the physical and mental body in a state of well-being, enabling the body to cope with stress and improve concentration, while also improving the functioning of the immune system. 🔬 ❌ This concept is not scientifically or officially recognized but many believe it meets expectations. Ashwagandha is part of the ayurveda pharmacopeia in India and has made a remarkable breakthrough in the West since COVID-19. 🐴 This plant, also known as “Horse Shit” for its strong horse smell, is the subject of debate due to its potential toxicity risks. ⚠ Denmark has banned ashwagandha following a risk assessment by the Technical University of Denmark. Additionally, the root extract could have negative effects on thyroid and sex hormones. More recently, the Food Standards Agency in the UK has placed the plant on its Risk Analysis Tracker to further monitor it for potential risks. This was based on a report by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands, dated March 2024, which advised against the use of this ingredient due to risks of toxicity and concerns about hormonal interactions. This mistrust is not unanimous, many believe the conclusions of these reports are unfounded because they are based solely on highly concentrated products and mix the results according to the different parts of the plant (root, leaf, etc.). 🥕 Karott' is following this interesting #health topic and we will be sure to keep you informed with the latest developments.
