🔎 Hearing loss affects Europeans of all ages, with increased prevalence in the elderly. 👶 Currently, 2-4 in every 1,000 children are born with sensorineural deafness or develop hearing loss early in life. The correlation between age and hearing loss is significant: 11% of Europeans aged 60-69 suffer from it, 42% among those 80-89, and over 56% in those over 90. 👂 As Europe's population ages, the incidence of hearing loss is expected to rise sharply. Yet, shockingly, less than 10% of those with severe hearing loss receive necessary treatments. We need to make sure that policymakers learn about the importance of hearing loss awareness, early prevention, access to hearing care interventions, and the need for research and data collection. 💡 Hearing loss ranks as a foremost cause of disability globally, measured in years lived with disability - a metric that reflects its profound impact on quality of life. ⚖️ While the costs of hearing care are often calculated, the costs of not providing care are rarely considered. The true question isn't whether we can afford to provide rehabilitative services and auditory devices; it's whether we can afford the consequences of not doing so. 💰 Hearing loss costs Europe €213 billion a year. Mental ill-health costs Europe €600 billion a year. That’s total annual costs of €813 billion. This isn't merely a health issue; it's economically imperative. 📢 In the face of a demographic shift towards an older population, the need for action is more pressing than ever. 💡 In the professional realm, hearing health is not just about individual well-being - it's a key player in career longevity and success. 9 out of 10 Europeans with hearing devices confirm that they are indispensable for their job performance. Yet, the impact of untreated hearing loss on employment is profound: 👉 It's linked to higher unemployment and lower retention. 👉 There's a notable correlation with increased early retirement. 👉 Those with hearing loss report lower income levels. 💵 Investment in hearing care yields significant returns, with every dollar spent on hearing screening generating $1.62. It becomes clear: we must prioritize hearing health at the national level. Programs like 'Over 55 Hearing Screening' are pivotal in enhancing access to hearing care and treatment, narrowing the employment gap for those with hearing loss. 📣 Soon, we will launch our Hearing Manifesto.
