  • The time has come for the next chapter: CitizenLab is now Go Vocal! 📣🎉 We have rebranded to better reflect our commitment to empowering communities and fostering meaningful participation. While our name and image have changed, we remain the same team, led by the original founders. Since our inception, we have partnered with over 500 local governments and organizations of all sizes to make local democracy more inclusive and have provided over 1,000,000 community members with a platform to actively participate in shaping their communities. We are excited to continue building stronger communities together. Want to learn more about our rebranding story? • The London Borough of Newham's People Powered Places program resulted in funding for 157 community initiatives when residents were asked how they would like to see public funding used to improve life in their borough. With a budget of 1.6 million GBP, residents recommended projects including green spaces and a mini lending library, among many other community-focused projects. Using Go Vocal's digital engagement platform, residents were able to put forward proposals, vote on fellow residents' suggestions and have their say on how the budget would be spent. #GoVocal #CommunityEngagement #GovTech

🌟 Enthusiastic Reflections on Civic Engagement Inspiration Session (20/06)! 🌟 Civic engagement is based on the understanding that groups can outperform individuals in problem solving, innovation, prediction, creativity and other tasks (collective intelligence). Civic engagement can lead to more legitimate policies and to more trust with citizens. Hence, it's crucial for administrations to include diverse and external voices in their processes. We possess a whole toolbox of smarter government practices without realizing it. These methods can be applied at various levels of government, at different stages of policy-making, and for a multitude of needs. Our session shed light on this! Stephen Boucher kicked the session off with an insightful explanation of Citizen Engagement, referencing Sir Geoff Mulgan’s inspiring analogy of government as a brain. According to Stephen, collective intelligence can transform governments into societal catalysts, capable of tackling complex challenges. Sandra Planes-Satorra guided us on how to implement civic engagement in practice. She emphasized the importance of understanding what topics truly matter to people and how citizens will benefit from engagement efforts. Continuous feedback loops are essential once these initiatives are underway. A shoutout to Go Vocal (formerly CitizenLab), a Belgian pioneer in citizen engagement with a global reach! Aline Muylaert advocated for a blended approach and shared the very useful innovative e-Participation Canvas tool. She brought her “gang” of concrete national and international good practices: Jens De Rycke shared Sport Vlaanderen's strategy, advising a mix of engagement calls to maintain momentum. Their innovation lab also actively engages citizens to identify new trends in sports. Steve Glange from Luxembourg suggested starting small to cultivate internal enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Luis Paternina inspired us with Chile's robust strategic approach, sparking a bit of healthy envy among our civil servants! Let's conclude: There is ample scientific research and practical examples proving that civic engagement works. So, It’s time to climb higher on the participation ladder and help restore trust with our citizens and companies. With democracies under immense pressure, civic engagement is probably not just a choice but a duty. Let's ensure psychological safety during these processes—after all, feeling safe to express oneself is the cornerstone of precious democracy. 🙏 A huge thank you to Stephen, Sandra, Aline, Jens, Steve, and Luis for your invaluable insights and for inspiring our Belgian innovation network. Let’s get started and make a difference together! 🏃
