Many of us currently working for the #EuropeanUnion, just like Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, are #AFSers. We took part in a high-school exchange programme that has been shaping thousands of people's lives since the end of World War II. Formative is a bit of an understatement. In my case, it was transformative. In the early days, exchanges were only between Europe and the United States, but in the 1980's the programe expanded everywhere. I was an AFSer from Portugal to Belgium-Flanders in the school year 87/88. In the beginning we used to sing "From New York to L.A., AFS is the way", now we can also sing "From Japan to Brasil, AFS is a thrill' 😎 With the help of Michele Pescolloni we are trying to revive the AFS Club in Brussels. Are you an AFSer too, wishing to meet others? Then fill in this form and join us: https://lnkd.in/ejQE52ME Intercultural salutions! It's almost time to #UseYourVote at the European elections and we want to make sure that no question goes unanswered before you go to the polls from 6-9 June. In 2023 the motto was: Youthless policy is a useless policy. In 2024 we say: Youthless democracy is a useless democracy. Why I asked this week how you feel about the future? We, at the Council of Europe Youth Department, organized a Youth conference Confidence in Tomorrow - In the framework of the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe on the anniversary of the Reykjavik Summit, with great support from the #Lichtenstein presidency - discussing how to have a better democratic future with human rights and human dignity for all! How do we create confidence in Tomorrow and how do the Council of Europe and its member states continue strengthening the pillars and values of this institution as agreed at the Reykjavik Summit? By thinking, learning, participating and acting with and for youth because: “Young people have always been the most precise compass for where democracy and human rights need to be” Young people's voices and all forms of participation in democratic and political life have always been the path to strengthening the pillars of the Council of Europe and cutting the silences that emerge before us when civil society, especially focusing on young people and all of its intersectional diversities. Thank you, Council of Europe, and the Youth Department for creating these spaces and opening doors for generations of young people to deliberate, debate, and decide contemporary matters - and for the understanding of how important the further integrating of youth perspective into the work of institutions and member states, followed by the unique co-managed decision-making structures - with and for young people. As chairperson of the Advisory Council on Youth, I am excited to see that, in the light of the Reykjavik Summit declaration, highest officials of both the Council of Europe and of the member states recognize the importance of young people’s meaningful participation in democratic processes. Secretary General of Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić, Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty , Director General of Democracy and Human Dignity Marja Ruotanen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lichtenstein Dominique Hasler and Ministers of Foreign Affairs and state secretaries from Finland, Finland, Liechtenstein, Malta, Norway, Portugal, and Ukraine took part in the event and came to dialogue with and listen to young people. To amplify voices of youth civil society, we were delighted to have the president of the European Youth Forum Maria Rodriguez Alcázar as a guest speaker. For the first time ever, young people were part of the official Council of Europe commemoration of the anniversary of the institution - more about that soon. You can be confident in tomorrow because we don't have the luxury not to care today. Happy birthday - 75 years young 💙 Read about the Youth Event and it's message: https://lnkd.in/dnRnXiqg
