Worth a repost…

It's your assets and success that threaten other people, for people who derive their self-esteem from being superior. The irony? Because of our insecurities we refuse to validate and include each other, which is the very thing that heals insecurities. The result? unmet needs expressed as resentment, contempt, cutting, exclusion etc. Message? If you are being cut or are cutting someone, try to find out what the unmet need is from both sides. Ref. Timothy R. Clark - Carol Dweck

Twice yesterday we discussed the struggle of women 'cutting down' other women in the workplace. While I have my theories for the structural reasons behind it (patriarchy), and while we know that women who collaborate together are more successful, it is still a common experience. How do/would you counter this? Curious to hear from others who have experienced this and can share any tips.

🎤 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 🎤 - Alison JY Lee and Michael Taylor   We are thrilled to host the Language Matters event, a beTwinos and Microsoft partnership, where we will explore how language and behavior can be leveraged to build healthy and inclusive workplaces.    Today’s spotlight goes to the amazing duo at Urchin Insights: Alison JY Lee - Learning Lead, and Michael Taylor - Tech and Operations Lead. Alison is an Organizational Psychologist on a mission to supercharge soft skill development with data and tech. She has worked alongside Fortune 500 companies to build talent management solutions and major players in the European start-up and scale up scene to define and maintain their leadership culture in times of rapid growth. Alison brings her understanding of what makes learning engaging and meaningful to her role as Co-Founder and Learning Lead at Urchin Insights, where she leverages AI to develop impactful opportunities for learners to practice soft skills and receive personalised feedback.   Michael is also an Organizational Psychologist turned Data Scientist with the belief that personal growth enables us to do anything.   He spent 15 years in consulting, where he led a business unit dedicated to helping global organizations define what makes great leaders and to develop their leadership pipelines.   Through his experiences, Michael realized that leadership development in most companies is accessible only to a select group of talents, while happy and inclusive workplaces require everyone to be better skilled at communicating and collaborating.   That’s why, as Co-Founder and Head of Product at Urchin Insights, Michael is leading a team that’s developing new, AI-based solutions that change how we deliver, and who has access to, quality soft skills development. Feel free to DM us should you have a buzzing question for Alison and Michael.   We look forward to the #LanguageMatters event!

“Dare to surround yourself with a community of supporters” Today’s voice, in the I-Am-Unstoppable campaign is Rein Meirte (She/her) Meirte, Founder of Clusity 🌱 the #womenintech community, an inspiring #womenintech network providing connecting events, authentic stories and Diversity & Inclusion expertise for tech companies. Join us in reading Rein’s point of view on how the power of community can support and enable the personal and professional growth of a Tall Poppy. "The first time I heard about #tps I thought: ‘This is not me. I don’t think I stand out or have been cut down.’ But when I look around me, I do see it happening to people… ‘When a flower doesn’t bloom you don’t fix the flower, you fix the environment. In the context of the Tall Poppy Syndrome, it’s not about changing the person, nor about empowering them. But rather about bringing awareness to the system that brings about this negative behavior of cutting people down. By supporting each other, finding a community  that inspires that feeling of having “the wind in your back”, instead of “wind in your face”, you can navigate the challenges of being a Tall Poppy. This is also how we see things change at Clusity. Our community of women in tech enable each other by inspiring and connecting with like-minded people. You can’t always choose your colleagues or manager, but in your network you can surround yourself with people who support you and become your soundboard and cheerleader.   There’s much power in being able to recognize cutters. By becoming aware and labelling the phenomenon, you take away a lot of it’s negative power. I feel that this can give someone the confidence to continue being ambitious, different, ahead in their professional development. Something I’ve come across often, is people downplaying their achievements to not stand out, not come across as arrogant. ‘It’s by coincidence that I ended up in this role.’ or ‘I was just lucky.’ are often at the start of someone telling their story. I believe that part of this comes from the fear of  getting cut down. We can encourage each other to own up to your own achievements, making it more comfortable to stand tall as a Tall Poppy.  Let’s celebrate each other and our own achievements a bit more, by finding people who do the same. That’s what a community can do!"
