๐จ Today the Digital Markets Act (DMA) comes into force. Here are 4 ways to check if Consent Mode is active. ๐ 1๏ธโฃ Conversion Diagnostic Tab in Google Ads: Navigate to your primary conversion action and enter the "Diagnostic Tab". You will see if Consent Mode is active and if the modelling threshold has already been reached, you will even see the conversion uplift %. 2๏ธโฃ GA4 Data Streams Consent Settings: recently Google added a dedicated "Consent Setting" verification page to your GA4 property. There you can check if consent signals for Ad measurement and Ad personalization are active or not. 3๏ธโฃ GTM Preview: By debugging with GTM, you can see if Consent Mode is correctly implemented and adapts to user consent updates. Just open the debugger and navigate on your summary page to "Consent". Per default, consent should be "denied" (red) and once consent has been given, the variables will be updated to "granted" (green) for the cookie selection you've consented to. 4๏ธโฃ Chrome Dev Tools: For those who like it more technical, you can check consent mode implementation directly by "inspecting" your website with Chrome Dev Tools. Open Dev Tools -> "Console" -> enter "data layer" -> check for ['consent', 'default'...] and open it. All should be set to "denied". Once consent has been given, re-start the process and look out for ['consent', 'update'...] and open it -> you should see now "granted" for the selection you've consented. This includes the collection of encrypted first-party (user) data (e.g. e-mail addresses) in order to enrich conversion tracking (= enhanced conversions). If this sounds familiar, it's probably because the feature has been around in Google Ads for a while. ๐ก Why is this a big issue? Quite apart from any data protection perspective, the collection of user data in GA4 is intended to open up two areas of application: ๐ Data on demographics and interests: Google itself says that in the future, this information will no longer come from cookies and device IDs, but from logged-in Google users ๐ Enhanced Conversions: as I said, this feature already exists for Google Ads Conversions. The basic idea: better attribution by linking different touchpoints with the help of user data. By comparing, e.g. the email address, Google can assign several touchpoints to a user who would have been identified as different users without this data. ๐ Above all, the topic of enhanced conversions could provide added value from a GA4 point of view if Google manages to make previously "hidden" touchpoints visible in the user journeys. However, external tracking tools will certainly not come close to accuracy. The following options are available for collecting user data: ๐ via the Google Tag: in the tag settings of your GA4 data stream, you can activate a toggle for it under "Allow user-provided data capabilities" and then choose whether the data should be collected automatically or defined via CSS selector. ๐ via Google Tag Manager: similar to setting up Enhanced Conversions for Google Ads, there is now also the option to submit user data with GA4 event tags ๐ via Measurement Protocol: it seems that there will also be the possibility to collect user data for offline conversions. Unfortunately, the documentation for this is still missing. ๐ง When setting up your GA4 and GTM accounts, be careful not to accidentally activate the toggles. Especially the options for automatic recording can quickly lead to problems.
