Sonos Move 2 Portable Speaker Promises Extra-Long Battery Life

The Move 2 is Sonos' first portable speaker to offer stereo sound. Get it for $449 on Sept. 20.

Sonos' second-gen Move speaker, announced today, is the company's first portable speaker to offer stereo sound thanks to an overhauled acoustic architecture, dual angled tweeters, and a midwoofer for "faithful playback of mid-range vocal frequencies and deep bass."

The battery life on the Move 2 has more than doubled compared to the Move, from 11 to 24 hours of playback on a single charge from its 44Wh replaceable battery. There's no "virgin plastic" used in its design, and Sonos claims its new portable speaker is curbside recyclable.

A USB-C port is used for recharging, charging other devices such as your smartphone, and through the use of a line-in adapter, it's possible to plug in devices such as a turntable or to hook it up to your router using an Ethernet cable.

Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 connection options make it easy to pair two Move 2 speakers, pair one or more of them with other devices in the Sonos range, or wirelessly connect a turntable.

As you'd expect, the Move 2 is IP56-rated like the original for all-weather use and it ships with a wireless charging base included. It's possible to control the speaker using your voice thanks to a built-in far-field microphone array (which can be disabled) or by using touch controls on the unit.

There's support for most music streaming services alongside Sonos Radio HD. The Sonos app offers access to an adjustable EQ for the speaker, and Automatic Trueplay software promises optimal playback based on a combination of the environment and the type of audio being played.

The Move 2 measures 9.5 by 6.3 by 5 inches and weighs 6.61 pounds (3kg) including the battery. Despite the upgrades compared to the original Move, the Move 2 is only $50 more expensive at $449. It will be available on Sept. 20 in olive, black, or white matte color finishes.
