LastPass Blames 12-Hour Outage on Faulty Chrome Extension

LastPass is attributing a 12-hour outage on Thursday to a bad update to its Chrome extension.

On Friday, the company said performance had returned to normal levels and “continues to be stable and fully operational." LastPass will "actively monitor the service throughout the weekend before setting this incident to 'resolved' status," in order to make sure there are no further issues.

According to its status page, engineers identified an update to the Chrome browser extension that inadvertently caused load issues in its backend infrastructure.

The issue started around 1 p.m. ET on Thursday after that update started rolling out. LastPass users were unable to access their password vaults or log into their accounts. Many were served a “404 Not Found” error, suggesting the page they were trying to reach did not exist.

Shortly after the problem was “fixed,” users continued to complain online about the issue, suggesting that there were some lingering issues even after LastPass gave the all-clear. Throughout the weekend the service has appeared to operate normally

In recent years, LastPass has suffered several security incidents, including one that could have been prevented had an employee updated a piece of software on their home computer.
