Soundscape Ecologist, PhD Candidate & Casual Academic at the Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith University
In light of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Griffith Science and Environment heats coming up today and tomorrow, I thought I'd share an unexpected outcome of competing in the event last year. I got to work with the Griffith Graduate Research School to create this short snapshot of my PhD research. The 3MT can be very daunting — especially for anyone with limited public speaking experience (like me last year). The competition helped me overcome my fear of public speaking, and now, believe it or not, I enjoy getting up to speak when teaching classes and presenting at conferences! The training and support I received from my institute, school, and the greater Griffith University team was far more than I ever expected from a competition. It really has helped me grow into the speaker and researcher I am today. A huge GOOD LUCK to everyone competing in the 3MT this year from all universities — you've got this!
