Latest Westpac Melbourne-Institute consumer confidence data its out!! #breakingnews Not-so-good news: 📉 Consumer Sentiment Index dipped 0.3% to 82.2 points in May, from 82.4 points in April 2024. ↘ This represents a downward trend (currently), following fluctuating sentiment since #cashrate hikes in May 2022; and still indicate negative consumer confidence (anything below 100.0 index points). ⛔ Represents a more cautious consumer, thus increasing tendency to save. This can have a multiplier effect on businesses / industries, as people are more cautious with their spending. Good news: ☑ Timing of data suggest that the Federal Budget's cost-of-living support measures are relatively well-received 💰 Over 37% of consumers surveyed expect to pay less tax from 1st July. Of this, 30% plan to save all of it and more than 50% expect to save at least half ⚠ A "less spend" consumer base can contribute to lowering #inflation rate; that said a 0.3% dip on a month-by-month basis is quite small, so the impact may not be as big (as needed) to turn the RBA's inflation rate expectations For those in #realestate, the report indicate that #housing sentiment remains stuck between weak "time to buy" assessment and strong price expectation. I can see this reasoning, however it is incredibly dependent varied on an area by area basis, based on the demographic demand vs supply. In places where there is very little new stock planned, the "time to buy" assessment would be stronger.

As consumers navigate a “higher-for-longer” interest rate environment, Mozo's latest report sheds light on the state of Aussie savings, uncovering shocking insights and urging savers to rescue their savings, and compare rates to get the best return possible. "69% of Aussies have never switched savings accounts, despite earning less interest than those who do,” says Rachel Wastell, Mozo's personal finance expert. “It's like we've all got Stockholm Savings Syndrome. Aussies are not switching savings accounts because it’s too much effort, or they are switching but for convenience, not higher rates.” The report draws on extensive analysis of 232 savings products and reveals millions of Aussies could be missing out on higher rates due to laziness and loyalty.

After weak card transaction data out of NZ a couple of weeks ago, KMD Brands (KMD) cited tough going in NZ on Friday paired with guidance well below consensus with the stock closing -8%. The data, obtained from Stats NZ, shows that NZ card spend on apparel has been especially weak, negative every month since February. Services, vehicles, fuel, hospitality saw notable negative prints in May also. After KMD’s testament to the challenging conditions, I’d be even more cautious on NZ retail exposure, especially in apparel. The good news is that many ASX-listed apparel retailers don’t have significant NZ exposure. For example, Accent Group (AX1) only sees 13% of total revenue from NZ while Premier Investments (PMV) sees 10%. In comparison to KMD's 27%, it probably won't be enough to move the needle come results day but of course it all counts. For those that use NZ’s economic data for their crystal balls here, it may be a sign of things to come...

The monthly consumer price index (CPI) rose to 3.6% in the 12 months to April, outpacing the expected increase of 3.4%. We have released our Q1 2024 market overview for the retail sector in Australia. Retail transaction volumes in Q1 2024 were subdued at AUD 566.1 million across 18 assets, primarily from the limited carry-over from Q4 2023, where over AUD 2.8 billion transacted. While shopping centres may not be immune to a cyclical slowdown in discretionary retail sales, the sector has recalibrated on rents and values. The sector performance will also be supported by a combination of low supply and strong population growth forecasts, which exceed most mature economies in the medium to long term. The calls for interest rate cuts got a boost with yet more dismal consumer sentiment data and worrying details in the NAB Business Survey. The business sector is scaling back its employment and Capex plans, trading conditions are falling; in terms of price (inflation) readings, firms are saying that product prices, purchase costs and labour costs continue to track towards levels prevailing pre-pandemic which was when inflation was 2% or less. If the RBA wants to avoid a further spike in unemployment and an overshoot in inflation to below 2%, it needs to start the interest rate cutting cycle very soon.
