Actuaries have a huge role to play on climate change. It was great to see the leadership, passion and energy on display that this weeks Actuaries Summit. Key highlights for me included: • The opportunity for Australia to develop holistic, integrated, transition and adaptation plans • Banks are reviewing climate risk in their mortgage portfolios and playing a key role on adaptation, resilience, and building back better • The importance of a just transition, to maintain public and political support • The need for consistent, accessible flood data, that is consistently accepted and used by all stakeholders • The focus on stopping flood exposures increasing, whilst also building resilience where necessary • It is challenging to understand the impact and cost of extreme climate events • There are complex interactions between risks, with cascading, compounding feedback loops • Adaptation responses involve tradeoffs and will be challenging to progress, given economic and social pressures As respected professionals across financial services, actuaries have an opportunity and responsibility to help drive and navigate an orderly net zero transition, for the good of society and all our businesses. #netzero #netzeroemissions #climatechange #sustainability #leadership #actuaries #allactuaries2024 Actuaries Institute

Pacific Economist Kishti Sen believes there will be some good news in the 2024-25 National Budget, as the revised budget deficit for 2023-24 will likely come in smaller than what was originally predicted. In Sen’s view, the deficit will be in the two to three percent range, as opposed to the 4.8 percent of Gross Domestic Product that was projected when the current budget was announced last year. Sen explains the reason behind this is that the government has been able to control its expenses particularly its operating expenses.
