There is a lot to be learned about the stages of business by looking at the Australian rainforest. With layers that make up the ecosystem, so too is the business landscape. 🌱 At the bottom of the rainforest floor are the small shrubs that struggle to grow due to the lack of sunlight and water. Much like small businesses without access to capital and vying for market share, they often remain small, never transforming into a large dominant force. ☀️ Every now and then, a large tree falls, opening a gap in the canopy and providing an opportunity for the sun to reach the rainforest floor. In the same way, when a large market player folds, it makes way for new players to take market share. 🪝Some achieve what the small shrubs can’t but with a much more strategic approach. The Calamus climbs to the top with its very long and flexible stem. It uses sharp, strong hooks on its fronds to attach itself to taller established trees, thus gaining support that enables it to grow higher towards the canopy. Much like fast-growing, aggressive companies, they actively take market share from the majors and, in some cases, take over the original tree. 💚 Then there is my favorite, the Queensland pine called KAURI PALM, which grows tall and fast, punching through the rainforest canopy where it spreads out like an umbrella and blocks the sunlight from reaching the plants below it. What I love about this tree’s strategy, which is ideal for business growth, is: 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡: It only spreads out once it reaches the goal. Most businesses go too broad too quickly, slowing down their growth. 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Whenever an invasive plant tries to attach itself to it, it sheds its bark, making them drop off. It is not easily distracted as it heads towards its goal. 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: Its extensive root system helps prevent soil erosion, especially on slopes or embankments. The end result is an unstoppable, secure rainforest leader that lasts up to 2,000 years. What is it that attracts us to stories about people overcoming adversity? Humans are hardwired to love rags-to-riches and beating-the-odds stories. We connect with the main character, empathise with their plight, and rally for them to succeed. While drawing strength and inspiration to overcome our own personal struggles. When I've watched movies like The Shawshank Redemption, Hidden Figures or Unbroken, I think "If he/she can do that, then I can do this thing that's holding me back in my life". After a productive morning updating the 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩 website, I headed to the breakwall at Nelson Bay for an afternoon of fishing. The highlight of my day? Catching a 600g bream! Mary cooked it brilliantly in a moilee curry sauce. While exciting, this catch represents more than a successful fishing trip. It symbolizes the delicate balance between hard work and leisure that I strive to maintain in my life. As entrepreneurs and mid-career professionals, it’s easy to get caught in the hustle and bustle of daily responsibilities. We often forget to pause, breathe, and enjoy life's simple pleasures. For me, fishing isn't just a hobby; it’s a form of mindfulness. It’s about being present, appreciating the moment, and recharging my batteries so that I can return to work with renewed energy and focus. Coulda-shoulda-woulda … Our Aussie shorthand for those times when we are lamenting  what could have been;  what we should have done; and  what we would do given another opportunity. If our expectations are overly high, or unrealistic, it can create many of those coulda-shoulda-woulda moments. I'm a great believer in advocating for yourself and others. This is at the heart of being, doing and having the life you want. It doesn't come easy as a female for fears or worries about what others may think or what might happen. That inner critic really does give us a rough ride and there's no guarantees except I know when I don't or hold back, I feel rubbish or regret it. Businesses are living, breathing, changing organisms. Look hard enough and you will be able to see exactly what your business needs. It’ll tell you. This is the next frontier of business leadership: recognising and refining your business based on the feedback it gives you. To do so, you need to both step away from it (perspective) and step toward it (insight). If you do so, you will find the exact code to unlock your business’s full potential. Have you been told you speak too quietly? Here are some things you can do. 📣  Breathe. Your voice is carried on your breath. The deeper, stronger your breath, the clearer and louder your voice. Regularly do breathing exercises to develop your diaphragm and build the base of a stronger voice. Singing lessons can be helpful. 📣  Prepare. Remember, you’re speaking for a reason and people want to hear your contribution. Prepare well for that contribution. Have a clear message, listen attentively to others and then speak with confidence. 📣  Posture. Support your voice with a strong, upright posture. Your voice comes not just from your mouth — it arrives on the instrument of your body. Good posture gives you confidence and supports the deepest breath. 📣  Project. Imagine you’re throwing your voice over the heads of the people you’re speaking to. Picture bouncing your words off the back wall of the room. 📣  Practice. Regularly speak aloud, practising these techniques. Find something easy to memorise — perhaps a poem or nursery rhyme from your childhood — and repeat it. You could do this in a park, meeting room or at home. Even your car, on the way to work, will work. Remember: your voice comes from the instrument of your body and the confidence of your mind. I reckon we're all interested in effective growth strategies, and the best strategies exist at the three-way intersection of: Easy Enjoyable Effective In my experience, especially in solo business, if your strategies aren't easy and enjoyable, they won't be sustainably effective in the long term. Very, very few people *grind* their way to success. That which you find easy and enjoyable you will also find effective.

Why your values determine your life’s outcome… I really believe this. Even more so because of personal events over the last 3 years. It’s why I dedicate time with clients to unpack theirs in our first few sessions. They a) help me understand your behaviour and b) determine a significant amount of your success. You see, people who are connected and aware of their values make decisions in line with them, and therefore, have more power. Not connected = blind decision making Not connected = ego centric choices Not connected = chasing instant gratification Not connected = lack of clarity Ever been in work or relationship scenarios that “just don’t feel right?” Chances are they were misaligned with your values. Being aware of that helps you navigate the situation with clarity. Being unaware leads to you blaming yourself, persevering in harmful situations, or chasing the wrong path. Don’t believe me? Cast your mind back to the last time something felt like it was a value clash. On a scale of 1-10: ❓How motivated were you, really? ❓How happy or fulfilled were you? ❓Could you REALLY see yourself in that situation long term? ❓How was your mental health? Bet the ratings pretty low right? I made the decision after having my daughter that I could never and would never bend to someone else’s will, or compromise my own values for the sake of their success. And I’ve shown it’s possible to make money, build the career you want, and have the life you deserve by living to your values. It’s not all fluff, it’s a strategic career planning move. Old lady goals! Have you watched The 100 Project about the life stories of Australia's 100-year-olds? One of the ladies, a 101-year-old called Paula Bowman, really grabbed my attention when I watched her interview on The Project recently. She is an incredibly smart and switched on lady with a zest for life and a great sense of humour! She looked fantastic and could easily pass for 70! When I grow up, I want to be just like Paula Bowman! What lessons can we learn from Paula about longevity and success in life? Paula was born in 1922 in Yorkshire (which is where I am from too!). During WW2, she volunteered for the Red Cross and found love with an Australian pilot in the midst of chaos which highlights her unwavering spirit. She moved to Sydney on the famous "Bride Ship" in 1946. She had 3 children, ten grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren but sadly lost her husband when he turned 70 and also her son who died at the same age as his father. Her story demonstrates the importance of embracing challenges and staying true to oneself. Even amidst personal tragedies, she exhibited strength and resilience. Throughout her life, Paula's passion for art brought her joy and purpose, especially during isolating times like the recent pandemic. What can we learn from Paula? The secrets lie in courageously facing life's challenges, staying authentic and finding joy in creativity. I am incredibly inspired by Paula's remarkable journey to embrace life with resilience and passion. May we channel her spirit as we navigate our own paths to success and fulfillment.
