About us

Sydney Theatre Company (STC) has been a major force in the Australian cultural landscape since its establishment in 1978. It is Australia’s largest theatre company in terms of audiences and amount of work presented each year, the state theatre company of NSW, and is recognised as one of the world’s most exciting and original theatre companies. The Company presents an annual season of around 15 productions across four harbourside theatres; Wharf 1 and Wharf 2 Theatres and Roslyn Packer Theatre in Walsh Bay, and as the resident theatre company of the Sydney Opera House. Our current Artistic Director is Kip Williams, who was appointed in 2016. STC has a proud heritage as a creative hub and incubator for Australian theatre and theatre-makers, developing and producing eclectic Australian works, interpretations of classic repertoire and great international writing. STC strives to create theatre experiences of the highest standard that consistently illuminate, entertain and challenge, and that reflect Sydney’s distinctive personality and engage broad audiences. Strongly committed to engagement in the community, STC offers an innovative School Drama™ program; partners with groups in metropolitan Sydney, regional centres and rural areas; and reaches beyond NSW touring productions throughout Australia. STC’s annual audiences throughout Australia are in excess of 315,000. In recent years, the company's international profile has grown significantly with numerous productions touring extensively to great acclaim in to Europe, USA and the UK. The theatre careers of many of Australia's internationally renowned artists have been launched and fostered at STC, including Benedict Andrews, Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Toni Collette, Judy Davis, Mel Gibson, Richard Roxburgh and Hugo Weaving.

Sydney Theatre Company Artistic Director Kip Williams, after an extraordinary 13 years with the Company, eight as Artistic Director, will launch his eighth and final program in September before stepping down at the end of the year. Following the phenomenal success of The Picture of Dorian Gray in London’s West End, Kip has decided to hand over the reins for a new Artistic Director to take on programming for 2026 while he makes space in his schedule for a potential Broadway season in 2025. Kip said today, “Serving as Artistic Director at Sydney Theatre Company has been the honour of a lifetime. Over the past eight years, I have had the opportunity to work with the most extraordinary theatre makers in the country and have been fortunate enough to program and help bring to life 89 productions for STC. When I started as Artistic Director, one of my goals was to increase the space and opportunity for Australian stories on our stages. I couldn’t be prouder that two-thirds of the shows I have programmed during my tenure have been original works and adaptations by Australian writers.  In the time I have spent in the Company, I have consistently been in awe of the immense talent that exists in every corner of The Wharf. I am forever indebted to the incredible staff and teams at STC with whom I love working and from whom I have learned so much. I am excited for the Company’s next chapter as it embarks on the search for a new Artistic Director and look forward to the next nine months working alongside Executive Director Anne Dunn and the entire team as we finalise plans for the 2025 Season and launch our remaining brilliant shows of the year.   I am also delighted that the future touring plans for a number of productions I’ve adapted and directed will keep me close to the Company in the coming years. I look forward to returning as an artist to the Company I love so much in the years ahead and thank everyone in the STC family for your support and passion for the theatre we make together.” Kip is just weeks away from starting rehearsals for his highly anticipated new adaptation of Dracula, the final instalment of his Gothic cine-theatre trilogy. He will continue to be an integral presence at STC in 2025, with a brand-new work to be unveiled as part of his 2025 Season and a tour planned for Dracula. We hope you join us in wishing Kip great success in his next endeavours.
