As NAIDOC Week 2024 comes to a finish, let's take a moment to reflect on how we celebrated indigenous history, achievements and culture at John Holland. 🔴🟡⚫ From our project sites to our corporate offices, our people enjoyed a range of events with cultural dance, traditional cooking and boomerang throwing. Our partnerships with First Nations Businesses and Peoples were highlighted at panel discussions and we shared the pride from across the country for our work to connect to the oldest, continuous living culture. At the Kari Corporate Games in Sydney, our team learnt how to use native ingredients in their cooking, throw a spear and create an Aboriginal-style artwork. In partnership with the Yarramabat Junior Football Club, we unveiled the new Indigenous geurnseys for the Under 18's girls team - featuring an eye-catching design to signify a positive future ahead. Let's work to Keep the Fire Burning as we celebrate Indigenous history and culture not just for NAIDOC Week, but every week. 🔴🟡⚫ #BlakLoudAndProud #NAIDOC2024 #KeepTheFireBurning #JohnHollandTransformingLives

2024 Roads Australia Fellow Chris Parkinson leads BG&E’s bridges practice in Victoria and South Australia, with responsibility for strategic direction, business and team development across a range of multi-disciplinary projects. He is also as a project director for several projects across the business, providing commercial oversight, risk management support and direction to the project management team.   For Chris, the Fellowship Program is helping him transition from an effective 'manager' to an effective 'leader'. "I am learning techniques to work more effectively with others and, in doing so, help those that I lead to grow and fulfil their potential," said Chris.   "For the team project, I collaborate with a diverse group of industry practitioners. We are investigating opportunities for the roads sector to contribute to Australia’s bold decarbonisation plans," said Chris. "This topic is very much ‘front and centre’ of the discussion across our industry, and the opportunity to shape content for our industry peak body is exciting and rewarding."   Chris' career highlight was being part of the design team for the New Gateway Bridge in Brisbane, which happened very early in his career. "It afforded me the opportunity to work with some of sharpest minds in our industry and develop my technical knowledge of balanced cantilever bridge design. It is a truly iconic bridge in Australia, and I look back on my involvement with pride and satisfaction."   When asked who has the greatest impact on his career to date, he cites former managers Bruce Gibbens and Joe Muccillo. "Both generously invested their time into my technical development. They helped me to discover my ‘unknown unknowns’, understand and apply advanced analysis and design techniques and develop into a competent and confident technical engineer." #FellowsFriday #Futureleaders

At Altus Traffic Australia, we are dedicated to achieving the highest standards in road worker safety by adhering to the Roads Australia - Road Worker Safety Guidelines. When the primary strategies of elimination and isolation from Appendix C of the guidelines are not applicable, we look to implement substitution treatments like mobile barriers and truck attenuators. These solutions are essential for aligning with Safe System objectives, aiming for a zero-harm outcome. The Altus Group fleet, equipped with over 130 Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) and a total of approximately 2200 assets, including Traffic Management Vehicles, Cone Trucks, and specialised TMA TL2 and TL3 vehicles, highlights our dedication to risk mitigation and compliance with the Road Worker Safety Guidelines. Mobile Barriers and Truck Attenuators are critical for reducing the likelihood and severity of impacts in workzones, protecting both workers and motorists. Mounted on shadow vehicles, they shield work crews from potential hazards. The Altus Group has a comprehensive TMA fleet which consists of: ▪ TL2 TMAs: Ideal for local roads and lower-speed highways, these attenuators are MASH Tested and Approved for speeds up to 80 km/h, absorbing impact energy and safely redirecting vehicles. ▪ TL3 TMAs: Designed for higher-speed roadways exceeding 100 km/h, these MASH Tested and Approved attenuators offer enhanced protection, withstanding greater impact forces. ▪ Light TMA TL2 Models: These smaller attenuators improve mobility and reduce traffic congestion on worksites. For Australian workzones, leveraging advanced safety solutions like mobile barriers and truck attenuators is essential. The Altus Group fleet is tailored to support our clients while ensuring the highest level of safety for our workers and the communities we serve. We’re kicking off #NAIDOCWeek by unearthing the inner artists within our team! NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for us to come together and celebrate the rich cultures and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia – so we invited celebrated artist Luke Penrith Arts and Designs to our Sydney office to run an art immersion workshop with our team. Inspired by this year’s theme of Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud, check out the masterpieces our talented team created under the guidance of Luke. The artwork will proudly be displayed in the Gamuda Australia Sydney office as a constant reminder to continue listening, learning and celebrating our First Nations People and Cultures. #GamudaAustralia #Gamuda #FirstNations #NAIDOC2024 #GlobalExpertise #LocalDelivery

Cross River Rail, Queensland’s largest single infrastructure project, will significantly boost rail capacity to support future population growth and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, it is also a city shaping program that has urban renewal and economic development at its heart.   That was the key message from an engaging and open discussion with Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton today at a Roads Australia Leaders’ Lunch in Brisbane, sponsored by Arcadis.   Graeme outlined how the project will accelerate economic activity through revitalising existing communities, building new city centres and encouraging more people to use public transport.   Acknowledging that the project is being delivered at a time of rising construction costs, a tightening labour market and global uncertainty, Graeme argued this made the case for innovation and modern methods of construction even more important.

How do we transform culture in construction and enable greater flexibility and diversity in the workforce? In the latest edition of our #IndustryPerspectives column Stefanie Nutt, People & Culture Director for John Holland's M7-M12 Integration Project, shares how she successfully influenced change from within.   Stefanie championed the Late Start program, which allows site workers to attend a pre-start meeting at 8:45am, instead of the traditional 6:45am start. This enables them to fulfill personal responsibilities, such as school drop-offs or caring duties, while pursuing a fulfilling career in construction.   "The response has been overwhelming," Stefanie writes. "The pilot program attracted hundreds of applicants, from which we selected 11 women with diverse backgrounds and industry experience. Now, six months into an apprenticeship, these remarkable individuals can balance the demands of their personal lives while pursuing careers they once thought were out of reach."   "To make an impact and drive real change, you need to earn the respect of others and build teams that work cohesively towards shared goals. It’s not easy, but it’s absolutely worth the effort, the hours and the conversations required to get there."
