I wonder if we could be getting WAY more value and impact from the closing part of conferences and events that we're currently getting...? I did an interview with the awesome Barbara Bruns Palmer for PCMA Convene magazine about my perspectives on and approaches to closing keynotes which you can find here - https://lnkd.in/gnQzUbwM. It's someting I'm extremely passionate about. Companies make enormous investments in conferences and events (including my own companies!) but the truth is most people don't enjoy significant behavioural change after an event. Which is a shame, because that is really where so much of the magic happens and the value is created. Often, this failure is simply because the event doesn't end in a manner which connects people directly to a critical path towards change. We should put as much time, energy and effort into carefully constructing the end of an event as we do into ensuring a great opening. In fact, as I suggest in Barbara's article, there is evidence to suggest we should care MORE about the ending than the opening (though that's very much still open to debate). I've been working with clients for a while now on how to design and deliver closing keynotes (cheekily referred to as a 'locknote') and the reception has been fantastic. Emily Heath and I will be publishing a bit more on this in the coming weeks and months as there is tremendous opportunity for event planners and L&D professionals (both internal and external) to improve their results, here.
