Last week, at the Australasian Waste & Recycling Expo, Sara Levett, our NABERS Head of Market Transformation, delivered an insightful presentation on “The Future of Waste Management & Resource Recovery in the Built Environment.” Alexandra Lomo Melian, our Stakeholder Engagement Officer, also shone in a dynamic panel discussion on “The Role Buildings Play in Accelerating Australia’s Circular Economy Transition.” Both sessions focused on effective waste management strategies and the crucial role of the built environment in facilitating the circular transition. Thank you to everyone who visited the booth and showed interest in the NABERS Waste Rating tool. Rating tool used to measure a building’s energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environment quality, and waste.
About us
NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) provides simple, reliable, and comparable sustainability measurement across building sectors like hotels, shopping centres, apartments, offices, data centres, and more. We use a simple six-star scale that helps the market to overcome information barriers to invest in energy efficiency, water efficiency, waste reduction and indoor environment improvements. The NABERS program is delivered by industry to commercial property owners and is administered by government. By creating high quality rating tools and working with partners to promote target setting, we aim to stimulate the market for environmental retrofits and drive competition between building owners and managers for better performance. We'll use this page to keep you up to date with the latest NABERS news, as well as to highlight other interesting posts that are relevant to our program.

Infrastructure Australia has released a new report, 'Embodied Carbon Projections for Australian Infrastructure and Buildings', which looks at the significant opportunity that lowering embodied carbon emissions in the built environment presents. The report also highlights that the NABERS national framework for measuring, benchmarking and certifying embodied carbon will allow building owners to set robust and measurable targets for reducing embodied carbon in buildings. Learn more about NABERS Embodied Carbon rating: https://lnkd.in/gcW6k-9B
Infrastructure Australia has today published our Embodied Carbon Projections for Australian Infrastructure and Buildings report. For the first time, we now have a baseline of the amount of upfront embodied carbon the nation’s infrastructure and buildings pipeline is forecast to produce in the five years to 2026-27. We found that these emissions are expected to produce a total of 247 megatonnes of CO₂e over a 5-year period. In 2022-23, these emissions, which come from materials production, transport, and the construction process, represented roughly 7 per cent of Australia’s gross national emissions. The good news is that thanks to our research we know we can achieve a 23 per cent reduction in these emissions by 2026-27 through greater uptake of recycled materials, lower carbon building materials and production processes, and more considered use of the steel that goes into building an asset. Acting on embodied emissions will require a collaborative approach with all members of the value chain and is key to ensuring that infrastructure and buildings built today are positioned for a Net Zero future.
