Grumpiest Recruiter ! - Still hiring Engineers, and whatever else they throw at me! Saving the world one CV at a time!

Careers..? It's all a matter of balance! I keep getting asked how do you balance speed and experience? I wish there was a formula for that, but not. Some non Linear control theory applies, but there again it's not always right. The tummy test ( a very scientific approach) works sometimes. The Cambridge potentiometer is a kind of balance and you measure things against a reference. I get calls and I give some sort of reference. Sometimes the needle balances, sometimes not. asked why? I can give a longer term view, but it's only a view. Anyway, recruiting is a challenge for a change. Looking for those bright sparks that don't use AI to write their resume, and have a passion for engineering

Journalists, technology and the next question As an Engineer, I was trained to look at a problem, think of the solution, evaluate, and ask the next question. Journalists don't seem to need to ask the next question, as a recent article, or more accurately a promo piece for a bottle manufacturer demostrated. Wow, a 10% use of recycled glass reduces greenhouse gas by 2%. Do the math. The next question, not asked, what if we just reused the bottles? Where is the emphasis on reduce? We waste energy like no tomorrow.. and this is another "efficiency". Crap reporting like this just does nothing for us, and does not lead to good outcomes. Engineers should challenge stuff like this. Where is the analysis, what are the alternatives. But what do I know, I am a grumpy old Engineer. #engineers #abc #rorymclClaren #grumpyrecruiter https://lnkd.in/g5YhR2AA

How do old guys measure up? Due to my small time in recruitment I end up talking to guys I have placed err 20 years or some even more! It's really interesting, yesterday's ' fossil" was a mere 61 and had more energy verve and drive than a thirty year old last week. What makes them tick? The answer is simple. keep on top of the subject challenge yourself, drive yourself, mix with younger people and don't bring out the " I did xxx 25 years ago" I wonder at the wisdom of some of our management making people redundant with that sort of experience. They are actually cheap The future is about tomorrow. We need successful, driven Engineers and Scientists to solve the issues of tomorrow. The Picture is my some of my standby non digital backup equipment for when the world goes to shit. Mind you a 2M CRO is not much chop analysing a Nvidia chip.

Electricity, metering and crap journalism. This weeks bleeding heart article from the ABC on power pricing is great, poor little people being ripped off is great, wow what a thing. But as usual, the ABC does the bleeding bit well, but does not chase down the rest of the story. Demand pricing is important, but the article does not point out the deficiencies in the metering system, the demand management and above all the AEMO system that lets the retailers install crap systems. As technologists, it's important to get this stuff right. Crap journalism reigns supreme. and we wonder why we get ripped off. #aemo #abc #drmartingill

100 Years Repute? What a crazy concept One of my old drill bits has " 100 Years repute" stamped into it. And you have to admire the guts of people stamping that into their product. So the question is, does what I do every day stand up to that sort of reputation? I try and have a balanced opinion, help the people applying for jobs, fix up CV's give rough justice when due and pull people out of the shit if I can. Probably won't work as a business plan, but there you go. Perhaps if some of our leaders thought that thought every day we would be further ahead. But what do I know? I am just a grumpy old recruiter looking for good in the people. #recruitment

Quick Simple accurate, just like the federal budget Fuller's calculator was a marvel, 41Ft 8 inches of slide rule, multiplication, division, proportion, and tables of data. All geared to power technology, industry and success. I did my HSC with a slide rule and got lucky buying a HP 45 in first year. Ok, Logarithms might just a little bit beyond what the average Polly could manage. But you get the idea. Sometimes it would help if politicians were restricted to using devices like this to work out the finance of the Country. Some politicians have tried to use a napkin to plan things which ended up well. Engineers are trained to get a order of magnitude of the problem and then get into the detail planning. What is it going to do? What is it going to Cost. Requirements analysis. more is required! Will someone pay for it? Perhaps a bit more Engineering in Parliament might get the country running better. Mind you one of the current Ministers accused previous of Fraud! Who would have thought?

" Useless tools" training and Universities and a Stanley 55 The Stanley 55 is an absolute mongrel to set up and use, and I have really tried! It can do everything, has every size you may want, but in the end it takes too long and you don't use it. Unlike a Degree, where you have the tools, it just depends on what you use. I had an idiotic survey come out from USyd, wow what a dumb thing. It made me think and wonder at the education I received at University of Sydney #USyd and all of the tools it gave me, some good and some not used, but the thing is at the time i didn't know what I needed. One of my old Prof's died this week, he had a 110% attendance. that's a real metric. The universities should stop bleating about lack of foreign " Students" and get back to education fail a few students kick their butts and turn out Grads that think, enquire and want to grow.
