Fantastic to speak to mayors and deputy mayors from #councils across Australia about their experiences, ideas and learnings from our 30th National General Assembly this year. It was a highly productive week of networking, #engagement and meetings with political leaders, decision-makers and key stakeholders to discuss how #localgovernment can build better, stronger and more vibrant #communities. Thanks to everyone who attended this year's historic #NGA24 in #Canberra. We look forward to seeing you again next year. #localgov

#NAIDOC Week kicks off in the Isaac region today with a smoking ceremony at the Wangan Ceremonial Site in Clermont today. The Wirdi peoples of Wangan and Jagalingou Country celebrated this year’s theme Keep the Fire burning! 🔥 Blak, loud and proud! It celebrates the unyielding spirit of our communities and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced. The fire represents the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations despite the challenges faced. It is a symbol of connection to the land, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As we honour this flame, we kindle the sparks of pride and unity, igniting a renewed commitment to acknowledging, preserving, and sharing the cultural heritage that enriches our nation.

Even with so much happening on the ground in the Isaac region, an opportunity can’t be missed to advocate with our fellow six Central Queensland Council Mayors in Canberra this week for critical road funding for our agricultural sector.

It was a productive day with deputations led by Isaac Regional Council Mayor Kelly Vea Vea, Rockhampton Regional Council Tony Williams and BANANA SHIRE COUNCIL Mayor Nev Ferrier at Parliament House in Canberra yesterday. We met with Murray Watt, Anthony Chisholm, and representatives from Catherine King’s office to discuss bringing forward their $400 million commitment to beef roads. We’re happy to report that we’ve secured a commitment from the Australian Government to work with us and bring forward this critical funding. This a big step to assist our ag and resource regions.

A joint statement from Kelly Vea Vea, Mayor of Isaac Regional Council, Stephen Smyth, General Vice President Mining and Energy Union (MEU), and Dan van der Westhuizen, Chief Executive Officer Anglo American in Australia. On Saturday, 29 June a localised ignition occurred on the longwall face at Anglo American’s Grosvenor Mine, resulting in an underground combustion event. A complete and orderly withdrawal from all underground areas to the surface was then safely completed, with all personnel safe and fully accounted for. We would like to offer our sincere appreciation to the teams managing the response at the site. Grosvenor Mine is a significant employer in the Moranbah region and takes its commitments to its people and the community seriously. We know its positive impact reaches far beyond the mine gates. We acknowledge that this event may be causing uncertainty for the workforce and local community. The priority for the team on site is to safely extinguish the underground fire by temporarily sealing the mine. Specialist emergency response teams, including the Queensland Mines Rescue Service, RSHQ, ISHRs (MEU) and mines rescue teams from neighbouring mines, are managing this from the surface. We are working closely together to keep the community informed of the potential impact from smoke. We have been in contact with the environmental regulator (DESI). DESI monitoring units are providing air quality data for particulate matter in the Moranbah area and those air quality readings have so far remained within DESI's ‘Good’ (green) quality category. External health specialists have reassured us that, based on current information they have, there is no impact to community health. However, any member of the community concerned about the risk to them or their family, should seek medical advice. Isaac Regional Council, MEU and Anglo American are continuing to collaborate on a daily basis to ensure our focus is on getting Grosvenor Mine stabilised and keeping the community safe and informed. We will continue to work together with RSHQ to understand the next steps with a view to implementing a safe restart and continued safe operation, at the appropriate time. ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE PRIORITISED IN $55.5M CAPITAL WORKS BUDGET Isaac region’s vast road network will receive a $25.5 million injection, marking one of the most significant road investments since COVID. Isaac Regional Council’s 2024-2025 Budget, released today, announced a $55.5 million in capital expenditure on 110 new or deferred projects, with 45% set to be invested in roads. Replacing bridges and fixing deteriorating parts of the 4,500 km Isaac network over the next 12 months is a focus for Kelly Vea Vea in her first term as Mayor. “Our roads are part of the economic and social lifeblood for our industries and communities. With the increased reliance on heavy industries to use these local connections, funding in these areas is vital,” Mayor Vea Vea said. BUDGET FOCUSED ON COMMUNITY GROWTH AND SERVICE DELIVERY About 97% of residential ratepayers will see an increase of $5 or less per week in their rates bill after the Isaac Regional Council handed down its 2024-2025 Budget today. In Mayor Kelly Vea Vea’s first budget address this morning, the experienced councillor and community advocate highlighted that maintaining essential services and supporting growing communities are more important than ever as cost-of-living increases. “We are committed to growing our communities and serving them better while placing a priority on things that matter to our residents, like roads, waste collection, and water security,” Mayor Vea Vea said. Mayor Vea Vea said Council is not immune from the cost pressures facing many families across the region, with considerable increases in costs like electricity, insurance, and fuel. “We’ve done our best to make sure that all of these increases have not been passed down to our hardworking ratepayers,” Mayor Vea Vea said. "Although rural land valuations have risen significantly, the majority of our Isaac rural landowners will experience an increase in their rates of 5% or less." “This budget we have focused on absorbing the cost pressures as best we can so that we can keep the rates increase to less than $5 a week for most of our residential ratepayers.” Rates fund core operations such as 19 community facilities, eight aquatic facilities, eight water treatment plants, six wastewater treatment plants, nine waste management facilities, 99 parks and playgrounds, and 4,500 km of sealed and unsealed roads.
