Talking pharmacogenomics and precision medicine, Faculty Fellow A/Prof Luke Hesson will be presenting at the 47th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia - HGSA. A/Prof Hesson will be presenting about ‘The relevance of pharmacogenetic testing in an Australasian population'. As Chair of the RCPA Pharmacogenetic Advisory Group, he will also discuss the Pharmacogenomic Indications Project recently published by the RCPA, which provided guidance for prescribers, pharmacologists and pathologists regarding clinical indications for pharmacogenomics testing in Australia. The HGSA Conference will be from 10 to 13 August 2024. A/Prof Luke Hesson's presentation will be on Monday 12 August. Our Drug Repurposing Projects Senior Manager, Dr Claudia Fuchs, is guest editing a special issue of the @International Journal of Molecular Sciences MDPI (IJMS), titled “Drug Repurposing in Rare Diseases: From Molecular Insights to Patient Benefits.” The issue will focus on innovative drug repurposing strategies to address therapeutic gaps and enhance patient outcomes. Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet and run with some amazing people, including Grace Tame (previous Australian of the Year) and Prof Richard Scolyer (2024 Australian of the Year). Prof Scolyer and I worked together in ACT Pathology in the late 1990s. It was an honour and privilege to run with him and have a chat about pathology and medicine and genetic pathology.

Congratulations to MCRI PhD candidate Erin Crellin who has received a June Opie Fellowship from The University of Auckland for her genomics research.   With families now able to access genomic testing directly through their paediatrician rather than clinical genetics services which can have long wait times, Ms Crellin is aiming to understand how children and their families experience this new approach to genomic testing. Ms Crellin said, "As parents with a child who has a suspected rare genetic condition know, the search for a diagnosis can be long and frustrating. "Paediatricians across Australia can now order Medicare-funded genomic testing for certain conditions, which means children and families have a better chance at getting the answers they need, faster than ever before. Through the fellowship I'm aiming to see how families adapt to this change." #Children #RareDiseases #Genomics
