Leading international design practice with studios in Australia, Asia, the UK, and US.

About us

We are a leading international design practice with studios in Australia, China, South East Asia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Our vision is to design the world's best places - places people love. Our design values are shared globally across all our studios, by the talented people who work in them: architects, interior designers, landscape architects, urban designers, planners and specialist consultants. We work across a broad range of scales, from the interior design of a boutique retail store through to major public architecture and strategic urban planning for cities. And we work together in integrated design teams because they produce the best outcomes for our clients. Our focus is on people and how we create better, more meaningful experiences for them. We do that through creative, holistic thinking, a deep knowledge base and a rigorous design process. We judge the success of the buildings and places we design by the way people use and enjoy them - the clients who commission them, the people who inhabit them. This NAIDOC week and every week, Hassell is committed to actively amplifying the voices of First Nations Peoples. ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’ is this year’s theme, and no project embodies NAIDOC’s mission to reclaim narratives and celebrate Indigenous identity more than the winning design concept for Ngurra: The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Precinct, produced by Djinjama with COLA Studio, Hassell and Edition Office in collaboration. The design concept for this long overdue cultural landmark could not have been conceived without the leadership and significant personal and cultural investment from one of our First Nations partners, Dr Danièle Hromek of Djinjama. As Australia’s first Indigenous person to achieve a PhD in built environment and spatial disciplines, we're humbled to be guided by Danièle and the Djinjama Collective on this project and many others, as part of our shared mission to acknowledge, preserve and share First Nations knowledge and culture through design. 🔗 Explore more of the important cultural design and research projects by Djinjama here: https://djinjama.com/ 🔗 Read more about our winning design for Ngurra: The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Precinct:  https://lnkd.in/gt6t_kC2 🖼 Pictured: Winning concept design of The National Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Centre, Canberra, Australia. Our research report, Vibrant and Viable Campus: designing a culture-led recovery, highlights the significant opportunities for universities to future-proof assets and build resilience — economic, social, cultural, and environmental — into the campus master planning process. According to Hassell Principal and author of the report Adam Davies, bringing students and teaching staff back together and reviving campus culture should be a priority for learning institutions. “We must refocus our attention on the campus’s role in attracting and retaining talent,” says Davies. “The conversation must include the campus experience and the role that teaching and learning, research facilities and student infrastructure play in getting people back on campus more often and keeping them there longer.” 🔗 Download the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gVvjihpV 🔗 Read Adam's interview with Campus Review: https://lnkd.in/gynPFX-B 📷 Photography: UQ Student Central by Scott Burrows #CampusDesign #EducationAndScience #CampusLife #PlacesPeopleLove

We’ve won an international design competition for four pivotal service buildings for the Shanghai Chongming Metro Line. The project aims to transform traditional infrastructure by focusing on ecological restoration and regenerative design in a location key to Shanghai’s future sustainable development. "We don’t just see this as an infrastructure project, these are city-shaping opportunities,” says Zoey Chen, Project Leader and Senior Associate at our Shanghai studio. “High-quality development demands innovative and considered design solutions with regenerative place-making at the heart of the process." “Our design proposal carefully weaves together the characteristics of the site and needs of future users, transforming traditional infrastructure into buildings and places that can be loved and enjoyed by people for years to come." 🔗 Find out more about our design for the Chongming Metro Line: https://lnkd.in/gazzVKky #UrbanTransport #RegenerativeDesign #GreenInfrastructure #Architecture #SiteSpecificDesign #ChongmingIsland #SustainableDevelopment

What does it mean to embed social value into the fabric of our cities, and how can we measure its impact effectively? This question has sparked a passionate dialogue across Australia, as we presented our new discussion paper, Social Value in the Built Environment — the result of a partnership between Hassell and Green Building Council of Australia. From Sydney to Brisbane, Melbourne to Perth, industry professionals gathered to explore how to integrate social value into projects and develop consistent, effective methods for measuring its outcomes. The enthusiasm at each event was evident, thanks in no small part to the speakers who led these critical discussions, and the engaged audiences who contributed their insights and questions. 🔗 Dive into the key takeaways from our Social Value in the Built Environment events and join the conversation to help shape the future of our cities: https://lnkd.in/gcAV7B-6 📷 Perth event photography by James Campbell. One of Australia’s most traversed public spaces, Sydney Airport International Forecourt, has won the Landscape Architecture Award for Infrastructure at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) NSW awards. Our design for the centralised plaza, now lush with 12,500 native plants, is the outcome of a revised Country-led approach that places social value at the fore. Each phase has been anchored in First Nations knowledge, from co-design and delivery through to subsequent maintenance. “The jury commends Hassell and Sydney Airport for creating a process where First Nations firms were involved through all stages of the project, leading to an immersive landscape experience for visitors to the airport and reducing urban heat in a highly urbanised precinct,” said the AILA jury. “Committing to ongoing maintenance managed by Wildflower is also commended, ensuring that the project is maintained with a level of care that has seen the planted areas flourish. The project sets an achievable benchmark for others, demonstrating how to design with Country and care for Country in a highly visited public space.” The landscape, which spans 9,500sqm, provides an ecologically rich planting palette that supports pollinators and increases plant density and diversity, as well as a green space for local workers, nearby businesses and airport guests alike to gather. Congratulations to our client Sydney Airport, our collaborators, Jiwah, Wildflower, Imbue Studios, Gujaga Foundation, Arup, Maynard Design Consultancy and our design team. 🔗 Learn more about this city-shaping project here: https://lnkd.in/g2tXGfy3 📷 Photography by Simon Wood #AILA #RegenerativeDesign #Countryled #Biodiversity #PlacesPeopleLove

We've tested our Six Qualities urban design framework by analysing four award-winning Australian projects, including our designs for Darling Harbour and Flour Mill of Summer Hill on Gadigal Country, Sydney, and Herston Quarter and Riverside Green on Yugerra and Turrbal Country, Brisbane. Darling Harbour's urban realm has created an 'openly networked' destination by improving pedestrian and public transport access. Similarly, the Herston Quarter master plan demonstrates the value of 'conveniently compact' places where complementary functions are co-located. Flour Mill of Summer Hill underscores the importance of embracing a 'playfully dynamic' strategy within rapidly transforming neighbourhoods, while Riverside Green's adaptability reveals its 'naturally regenerative' quality. 🔗 Explore ‘Six Qualities’ 2.0 here: https://lnkd.in/gVk545cW 🔗 Explore the original ‘Six Qualities’ report here: https://lnkd.in/gPp3hcsH   📸 Photography by Simon Wood, Scott Burrows and Mark Syke   #PlacesPeopleLove #UrbanDesign #LandscapeDesign #Sydney #Brisbane

Djinjama, in collaboration with COLA Studio, Hassell and Edition Office, has won a design competition for Australia's most significant new cultural landmark, Ngurra: The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Precinct in Canberra. Home to the National Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Centre, and the National Resting Place the design concept for Ngurra is set within an undulating landscape to capture the drama, beauty and spontaneity of the wild grasslands of Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country. The organisation, flow and movement of people throughout the design has been drawn from observation and meditation on the movement of animals through the landscape, a movement that has occurred for millennia. 🔗 Discover more about the Country-led design and process here: https://lnkd.in/gt6t_kC2 #Ngurra #FirstNations #FirstNationsDesign #CulturalPrecinct #CountryLedDesign #Architecture

Our design for Deloitte's headquarters at Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney, on Gadigal Country has won a Commendation in the Workplace Design category at the 2024 Australian Interior Design Awards (AIDA) and was recently ranked as the most desirable place to work in Australia by Randstad employment agency. Inside the award-winning workplace, each of the top four floors – designed for client meetings and collaboration – offer a very different purpose and aesthetic. Despite the evident contrasts in look and feel, our design provides a sense of familiarity, comfort, and intuitive navigation. A deliberate mirroring of layouts ensures every visit feels like a seamless journey, reinforcing a cohesive ambiance throughout. 🔗 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gRSXcRq2 📷 Photography by Earl Carter #Deloitte #QuayQuarterTowerSydney #QQT #WorkplaceDesign #Innovation #OfficeDesign #DesignExcellence

For raising the benchmark in health facility design and creating a calm and dignified environment, Ipswich Hospital's Acute Mental Health Inpatient Service has won the GHM Addison Award for Interior Architecture and the Award for Public Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects Queensland Awards. "Inclusive co-design cultivates a sound strategy for culturally safe spaces that support well-being through a deep connection with the natural environment,” said the AIA jury. "Generous spaces orient inwardly towards views of verdant vertical planting in light-filled atriums, while patient well-being is further supported by a circadian lighting strategy." Congratulations to our clients, Queensland Health HCD and West Moreton Health, our collaborators, and the design team. 🔗 Explore more about our award-winning design here: https://lnkd.in/gWGGabqG #DesignForMentalHealth #HealingLandscapes #CoDesign #MentalHealth #HealthDesign
