📰🔥 Hot off the press -- my first publication in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism. 🥳 Open access: https://lnkd.in/gEHjRTTi I'm so excited to share this research, which took place in La Caleta Marine Park in the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, a marine protected area close to my heart. 💙 It's where I learned to scuba dive 15 years ago, became a Reef Check Foundation certified EcoDiver, and began my love affair with conservation biology. Sadly, as is common in small islands, there's been a lot of overfishing in La Caleta, and the reef has severely deteriorated. Reef Check DR set up a community-based dive centre to help local fishers transition from illegal fishing to tourism. 🎣 ⚓️ Unfortunately, the project failed. 😕 My research set out to uncover why. 🔍 I used systems thinking to work with the system's complexity. The image below represents the tourism system in La Caleta, illustrated by a Causal Loop Diagram. It shows the elements that make up the destination, the connections between them, and the feedback loops influencing the system's structure and behaviour. Viewing tourism systems this way helps us understand the root causes of problems instead of focusing on surface-level events so that we can propose fit-for-purpose interventions. I'll be posting more about my research to share what I've learned about systems thinking and its immense value for systems transformation. In the meantime: 💡 Want to see systems thinking in action?
