    🎉 Excited to share that our paper, "Optimal energy storage configuration to support 100% renewable energy for Indonesia," has been published in Energy for Sustainable Development! In this study, co-authored with my Supervisor A/Professor Roger Dargaville, my co-supervisor the late Professor Ariel Liebman, and PLEXOS and modeling Guru Dr Ross Gawler from Monash Energy Institute Monash University, we utilized the PLEXOS energy simulation tool from Energy Exemplar to explore Optimal Energy Storage Configuration pathways for Indonesia to achieve 100% renewable energy in the future. Our research highlights the critical role of energy storage in supporting this transition, providing detailed analyses of optimal investment strategies and scenarios for integrating renewable sources into the national grid. Key findings include: 🔋 By 2045, achieving 100% renewable energy requires an installed capacity of 208 GW of battery storage, including long-duration 10-hour batteries. 🌞 Significant increases in solar PV installations, projected to reach up to 627 GW under the most ambitious scenarios. ⚡ Energy storage needs to be strategically distributed across Indonesia's provinces, with early investments focusing on 2-hour batteries and later shifting to 4-hour and 10-hour batteries. This paper suggest the location, size and time to operate the energy storage. 📉 A combination of renewable energy sources and battery storage can ensure grid reliability and cost-effectiveness, reducing reliance on coal and other fossil fuels. 📊 Note: In the Business As Usual (BAU) scenario targeting 100% RE in 2060, the study finds that Indonesia can achieve a 54-58% share of renewable energy by 2045 with significant investment in battery storage and renewable generation capacity.
