Synthetic biology has transformative potential for materials. The Scientist Summer 2024 issue spotlights synthetic biologists ushering in "an era of sustainable fashion." 🕷 Did you know that dragline silk, the thread by which the spider hangs itself from the web, is one of the strongest fibers? 🕸 Dragline silk's tensile strength—a measure of how much a polymer deforms when strained—is almost 3x that of silkworm silk. How might this shape biomaterials of the future? "Beyond durable fashion garments, tough silk fibers are coveted in parachutes, military protective gear, and automobile safety belts, among other applications." As an enabling technology platform, Cauldron Ferm provides manufacturing services for bio-material pioneers creating the textiles of tomorrow. 💡 Cauldron Ferm investor Phil Morle, Partner at Main Sequence, recently shared: "Like companies, regions are re-inventing themselves as nations re-focus on sovereign capability and as the entire industrial fabric of the earth is being re-built in response to climate change." Sharing this timely insight along with The Good Food Institute's latest resource: "The Alternative Protein Ecosystem Map." 📍 This interactive tool allows users to easily visualize and interact with geographical "hot spots" of alternative protein activity across the globe. 🗺 Check out the current map at the link below ⤵ https://bit.ly/3Sdzcxg Thanks to GFI for creating a tool to facilitate the discovery of regional hubs around the world. ICYMI: The World Bank's new food & climate report, "Recipe for a Livable Planet," highlights that food production contributes to one-third of GHG emissions. Among 26 promising emissions mitigation interventions, alternative proteins emerge as a top contender for impact. Key insights from the report: 🥈 Alternative protein shows the second-highest mitigation potential at 6.1 GtCO2 eq per year, after reforestation (8.47 GtCO2 eq per year) and followed closely by reduced deforestation (6.0 GtCO2 eq/year) 🌳 Alt protein frees up vast amounts of land for reforestation AND shifts demand away from the top two deforestation drivers: beef and soy for animal feed. 💸 Government investment is crucial to reach the full potential of alt proteins. We have the tools to mitigate the agrifood sector’s emissions impact and address the booming global demand for protein. Let’s work together to accelerate these climate-resilient innovations to provide for our growing population.
