Our family and friends experienced community sport as a vehicle for building cultural connection at our event with Koorie Academy LTD last week. This year we introduced a new funding focus area: Funding initiatives that develop community sport as a pathway to inclusion and cultural connection for those facing ingrained barriers to participation. Expressions of Interest for our Community Grant Round are open until 11:59pm AEST, 14 August 2024. For more information, please visit our website.

A grassroots charity based in Melbourne, Team Sports 4 All, seeks to overcome ingrained barriers to taking part in sport. In 2015, TeamSports4All was founded on the belief that no child should miss out on playing sports. Today it has the bold ambition to ensure that any child who wants to play sport can. The Bennelong Foundation provided funding for 60 children in high-need regions to participate in sports beginning November 2023. This grant has significantly accelerated the growth of the charity which helps Australians overcome ingrained barriers to participation in sport. Most of families supported by this grant TS4A are from culturally and linguistically diverse communities in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Often the parents are unemployed and isolated from broader communities, so the inclusion of their child in a sports team can be significant. “When families are in a cycle of disadvantage, it’s hard to break, but this charity has the potential to break that cycle,” says Simon Davie, CEO of TS4A. Too deadly! This NAIDOC Week, the Bennelong Foundation's friends and family took on Naarm's winter with a basketball clinic and cultural workshop hosted by Koorie Academy LTD. The sessions were led by Ricky Baldwin, CEO, Founder of Koorie Academy and Gunaikurnai elder, who ran a clinic for the kids, and Jida Copper, a Koorie Academy coach and Yorta Yorta man, led the adults' session. The cultural workshop was eye-opening and immersive for all involved. Baldwin explained that crafting Aboriginal artifacts was a process of healing for him as he shared his family's history—coming from two generations of the Stolen Generation. Participants in the workshop donned possum cloaks, engaged in stories, and held artifacts like an emu caller, number 7 boomerang, and bundi sticks. Today we unveil our new strategy, inspired by the ambition that every person has the opportunity to shape their future and chase their goals. The strategy, which focuses on opening pathways to economic empowerment and social cohesion, guides our approach to grant-making, partnerships and engagement. This is the Bennelong Foundation’s first new strategy in 10 years. It launches today alongside a new brand and a new website. “This new strategy is an evolution in how the Bennelong Foundation creates opportunities for meaningful change,” said CEO Laura Cochrane (GAICD). Bennelong Foundation Chairperson Carena Shankar said: “We believe in empowering people by providing them with opportunities they may not otherwise have access to. One small opportunity can kick-start a journey that can be transformational, both for individuals and entire communities.
