About us
The Australian Research Council (ARC) is a Commonwealth entity established as an independent body under the Australian Research Council Act 2001, reporting to the Australian Government Minister for Education and Youth. The ARC administers the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP), a significant component of Australia's investment in research and development, provides advice to the Minister on matters related to research, and assesses the quality, engagement and impact of university research. The National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP) comprises 13 schemes under two key programs, the Discovery Program and Linkage Program. Under the NCGP, the ARC funds the highest-quality fundamental and applied research and research training to eligible organisations (mainly Australian universities) in all fields across the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, as well as the humanities, arts and social sciences. The ARC administers 2 evaluation frameworks to assess the quality, engagement and impact of research — Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) and Engagement and Impact (EI). ERA provides a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of research produced by Australian universities against international benchmarks. EI assesses engagement of researchers with research end-users and shows how universities are translating their research into economic, social, environmental, cultural and other impacts.

📣 Congratulations to Dr Tim Legrand from the School of Social Sciences who was awarded $1,130,337 from the Australian Research Council (ARC) to research the extent of malicious blacklisting used by authoritarian states and their alliances to justify persecution of dissenters/minorities. The project will deliver the first comprehensive, publicly available and searchable dataset of global blacklists, and policies to challenge or avoid malicious blacklisting. ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/gd9-e2J7

UOW's Professor Lisa Kervin AM and Dr Nana Wang will be able to take their work to new heights after securing highly coveted Australian Research Council Future Fellowships. 🎉 Director of Early Start at UOW, Professor Kervin was awarded close to $1.2 million over four years for her work on intergenerational play. The concept involves understanding how younger and older generations come together for play across diverse contexts, with enjoyable, inclusive and engaging activities that fire the mind and build positive relationships. Dr Wang, a Research Fellow in the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials at UOW, has been awarded more than $900,000 for her research into developing next-generation battery designs for mild and extreme conditions. 🔋 Sodium-ion batteries are considered the most promising candidate for next-generation large-scale energy systems, supporting the path to net zero. Dr Wang’s project will conduct research to enable large-scale, cost-effective, high-performance sodium-ion batteries. “Professor Kervin and Dr Wang have two very different areas of research focus, but their remarkable work in their respective fields will reflect UOW’s research strengths and exceptional capabilities on an international level," said UOW Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Research and Sustainable Futures) Professor David Currow. #UOWResearch #ThisIsUOW

Congratulations to Digital Child Chief Investigator Lisa Kervin AM on her new Future Fellowship! Lisa's project will provide insight into the meaning of Intergenerational Play and how it can be an exchange of knowledge, skills, information, ideas and values while simultaneously increasing overall wellbeing. This study of Intergenerational Play will address the increasing phenomenon of disconnection across all generations.

An incredible feeling to count myself amongst this year's 100 Australian Research Council Future Fellows. This funding will allow us to better understand and design regulatory #RNAs in plants 🌿 and their molecular dance partners, #RBPs, with future applications in crops🌽 #Two2Tango 💃🏽 It will also allow me to grow the #RegRNALab team and to continue forming students that can join the growing #RNA research environment in Australia 🇦🇺 I thank the UNSW RNA Institute, UNSW Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences, all the kind colleagues that shared previous applications (successful & unsuccessful), and UNSW staff that helped me review the draft & rejoinder. Grateful and excited to get started!

In 2021 I resigned from a permanent position at the Australian National University to move up to Queensland to be with my now husband after a 5-year-long long distance relationship. The last three years have been riddled with short contracts and honorary affiliations in academia and industry, rejection and unemployment. We welcomed a beautiful baby boy and I kept my head down and published however much and whenever I could all the while seriously considering exiting academia. Today the Australian Research Council awarded me a $1 million Future Fellowship to continue my research into social and evolutionary dynamics of bone loss at The University of Queensland. One decision by the ARC changes my life dramatically. Life is nuts like that! So thankful 🥹
