We were honoured to host a women in leadership event in collaboration with EY, focused on empowering women through discussions on building confidence, career guidance, and the possibilities that AI represents for improving diversity. It was a pleasure to hear from inspiring female leaders Vicki Jamieson, Sarah Lowe, Maile Carnegie, Lisa Bouari, and Genevieve Bell. Here are some highlights from their discussions on fostering confidence, offering career advice, and exploring how AI can drive positive change in diversity.

"Nothing is lost by leaving your comfort zone and taking calculated risks." That's what Sheng Lee, ANZ Laos Country Head, reflects on at ten years with ANZ. Sheng began his banking career in Australia but seized an opportunity in our Pacific division after a friend in the Solomon Islands mentioned job openings. Initially drawn to the idea of Fiji - sipping coconuts under palm trees and on white sand beaches, a peer advised not to limit himself by location and focus on getting a foot in the door. He credits this as the best advice of his career. Sheng took on the role of ANZ Vanuatu Country Head. Over seven years, Sheng's expanded responsibilities include overseeing operations Kiribati and New Caledonia, alongside Vanuatu, before his tenure in Laos. Now, Sheng is about to move to Hong Kong to lead the Institutional Bank’s relationship team on the ground. His advice for having a rewarding international banking career? Don’t “procrastinate or prolong” decisions.

We had the honour of welcoming Palawa artist Josh Deane to our Melbourne head office, for a #NAIDOC Week collaboration with ANZ staff. It was a meaningful experience for all involved, to collectively create this artwork, and celebrate and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“We really wanted to target women and to focus on a financial literacy program. As a result of doing that we've contributed to the financial independence of women in remote communities.” Thanks to our Seeds of Renewal Program, Caroline and Christine from the Heyfield Community Resource Centre in Gippsland run a financial literacy program for local women impacted by the current economic climate or at risk of or experiencing family violence. Applications are now open for the 2024 program, with grants of up to $15,000 available for not-for-profit organisations and community groups in remote, rural, and regional Australia. Apply at frrr.org.au. Applications close 1st August 2024. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gE_xr3Ye

This one's for all engineers out there! We know the constant updating and tweaking of your work, based on feedback from customers and colleagues can create a lot of repetitive work updating code. To solve this, Oliver Gassman, Senior Engineer at ANZ Plus and his team have developed a highly automated and efficient design system known as Ocean Blue for the ANZ Plus website. Using Figma, the team have automated daily updates needed for the ANZ Plus website, significantly reducing manual work for engineers. This innovative approach allows for designers and engineers to focus on more creative and complex work while also ensuring high-quality customer experiences. If you’re wondering what life as an engineer might be like at ANZ, check out our new blog, the ANZ Engineering Way: https://lnkd.in/gQEJQBK6 #innovation #technology #engineering

Back in the day, designing a bank branch involved decisions like ‘where to put the dining room?’ and ‘how tall should the spire be?’ Sir George Verdon was the General Manager of ANZ's predecessor, English, Scottish and Australia Chartered Bank (ES&A). He had eccentric requirements when it came to designing the Verdon Chambers, also known as the ‘Gothic Bank’ where he worked and resided. We have restored and preserved our Gothic Bank, for you to enjoy as part of Open House Melbourne alongside our design partners Foolscap Studio. Explore historical artefacts, attend a panel with experts, and join exclusive tours of the normally closed Verdon Chambers, featuring preserved artworks and lavish rooms. It's all happening Sunday 28 July. ✨ Book now at: www.openhousemelbourne.org
