Rumour has it OpenAI has defined a set of capability levels to classify their GenAI abilities and that they are on the cusp of reaching Level 2. What I really like about the framework is it offers a useful set of milestones to measure the progression of AI and it's potential impact to business and society. The current generation of models definitely feel Level 1, amazing and very useful in targeted use cases but require a bit of focus, investment and integration to get the most out of them. The step change to Level 2 (possibly via GPT-5 which may come out this year) will be interesting... Medium level reasoning abilities coupled with PhD skills will we a clear demonstration of the pace of progress and the potential value these models can deliver. But as in life, thought without action is rarely impactful and if companies are not actively integrating this capability into their processes and systems the real impact may still be limited. Level 3 is where things will get very interesting... AI insiders believe this is possible in GPT-6 (~2026). Building tools, gathering and curating the data to enable this level will be critical and a year and half is not a lot of time. The framework is quite similar to one used to measure the ability of Autonomous Vehicles (AV). 6-7 years ago the hype and signals of progress for for AV's felt just as strong as GenAI today. The promise of fully autonomous fleets of cars was just around the corner, yet we have only consolidated at Level 4 of 6 in a small subset of vehicles, not that far from the Level 3 systems that were emerging at the time. I guess innovation can take longer than you think... Now history rarely repeats but it often rhymes and if we use Automous Vehicle AI as a benchmark, there is a reasonable chance progress will be slower than the hype machine will want you to believe. But even if Level 3 only emerges in 3-5 years, is that enough time for the bulk of companies to identify, prioritise and build the capabilities they need to keep up with the start-ups and organisations that are? And what will be the risks if they don't? #ai
