Ars Electronica Solutions has won the MONDO Award in the Multipurpose Venue category for their project "The Wave". The Gasometer Oberhausen GmbH captivates visitors with the exhibition "Planet Ocean," immersing them into the depths of the world's oceans. A highlight is "The Wave," a 1,000 m² projection featuring lifelike animations. Ars Electronica Solutions served as the artistic director responsible for the concept and realization of this installation. It includes a 40 m high wall and a horizontal screen, illuminated by seven projectors. Visitors can dive into the underwater world beneath the screen (the "Gaze"). Six festival locations and just as many exhibition openings, excellent research, award-winning media art, gaming, immersive art treasures, a critically lapidary NOPE – there are many good reasons to mark the pre-opening walk on your calendar. Officially, the “Pre-Opening Walk” is only the unofficial opening of Ars Electronica. However, because the walk from one exhibition opening to the next has long enjoyed great popularity, it is now practically part of the festival. Stops are made at six festival locations, where curators and artists give an insight into their work, the international and local art scenes mingle, old acquaintances are cultivated and new contacts are made. The u19 – create your world category of the Prix Ars Electronica offers young artists a platform to present their visions and projects. These works deal with topics that are of particular interest to the next generation and are present in their everyday lives. Jakob Gruber received the Golden Nica of the 2024 Prix Ars Electronica for his work ‘Fluten der Freiheit’. In ‘Fluten der Freiheit’, Jakob explores the moving and often life-threatening journey of refugees across the sea. At the centre of this project is a symbolic life jacket made up of the words ‘peace’, ‘democracy’ and ‘security’. This powerful animation is accompanied by a soundtrack that gives the viewer goosebumps and creates an oppressive atmosphere. The artwork conveys the enormous risks and hopes of refugees seeking a better life in Europe. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s quote from ‘On the Duty of Disobedience to the State’ – ‘Could there not be a government in which it is not the majority that decides right and wrong, but conscience? – the project questions the ethical and moral foundations of our society and encourages a deeper examination of the motives of refugees. In our interview with Jakob, we find out more about his inspirations, the messages he wants to convey and the challenges he faced in realising this project: https://lnkd.in/dUj5rz_Y #arselectronica24 #whoturnsthetide

Since 2018, Ars Electronica, the Cultural Ministry of Chile, and the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile have collaborated with the goal of fostering the media art scene among Chilean artists. The submitted proposals covered a diverse array of topics as well as forms of artistic expression and media that were employed for the realization of the projects. Submissions have addressed issues such as catastrophes caused by climate change, human-machine interactions, the artistic implications of artificial intelligence and the connection to the more-than-human world, to name a few. The two winning projects "Iron 56" and "Useful Simulations" exemplify the variety and creativity present in the submissions. "Iron 56" is an art installation of hanging compasses made from metal and magnets, which dynamically oscillate due to their interactions. This movement symbolizes the Earth's interplay with the four fundamental forces: Strong Force, Weak Force, Electromagnetism, and Gravity. "Useful Simulations" is a single-channel video installation showcasing a body performing in a closed camera system, altered by AI programming. This research project explores human-machine hybridization, creating new bodily forms and reflecting on death and humanity. For more information about the open call visit: https://lnkd.in/dNPAbBAE

The European Commission’s new initiative aims to promote innovation in Africa and future cooperation between Africa and Europe. Ars Electronica was commissioned to organize the competition. The Grand Prize goes to the project Balot NFT by the Congolese initiative Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (Art Circle of Congolese Plantation Workers). The award recognizes an innovative model of restitution that uses NFTs to re-collectivize African cultural assets, making them a tool of the decolonization movement.
