In this paper we continue our study of the scientific research carried out at the Institute of Physics of the National University of La Plata during the first half of the 20th century, and of the important role played by the physicist Ramon G. Loyarte. Based on his studies, alone or in collaboration with members of the Institute, towards the end of the 1920s Loyarte proposed the possible existence of a new quantum of rotational energy in the mercury atom. This idea raised criticism and generated a fierce scientific controversy that reached the national and international academic media. We analyse this controversy by studying the comments that appeared in international review journals. We also study Loyarte's activities in politics and science policy in Argentina in the 1930s and 1940s, where he was responsible for interesting political and scientific initiatives.

We analyse the scientific research carried out at the Institute of Physics of the National University of La Plata in the first half of the 20th century, and the cultural and social context in which they were immersed. We focus especially on the activities carried out by the Argentine physicist Ramon G. Loyarte, who was an emblematic personality in the scientific, educational, cultural and political world of Argentina in those years. We discuss his most important works in experimental physics and quantum mechanics, his activities in the management and promotion of science and the international impact of his scientific proposals, as well as the origin of the controversies unleashed by his most daring ideas. For the latter topics we employ a novel tool: we examine the comments on his work published in prestigious international scientific review journals, which help to understand Loyarte's findings in a more comprehensive and contemporary way.

We present an extensive archaeoastronomical study of the orientations of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Jesuit churches in the lands of the historic viceroyalty of New Spain. Our sample includes forty-one chapels and churches located mainly in present-day Mexico, which documentary sources indicate were built by the Society, and for which we measured the azimuths and heights of the horizon of their principal axes using satellite imagery and digital elevation models. Our results show that neither the orientation diagram nor the statistical analysis derived from the sample declination histogram can select a particular orientation pattern with an adequate level of confidence. We suggest some possible explanations for our results, discussing these North American churches within a broader cultural and geographical context that includes previous studies involving Jesuit mission churches in South America. Based on the analysis of the data presented here, we conclude that the orientation of Jesuit churches in the viceroyalty of New Spain most likely does not follow a well-defined prescription.

In this paper we study the impact that this initiative had on the modernisation of physics teaching at secondary and university level in Argentina. We focus on two of the most representative graduates of the Institute in those years, Ramon G. Loyarte and Enrique Loedel Palumbo, and analyse their most important pedagogical works and the public reception they received. These works are a sample of the contribution of the Institute of Physics to the raising of the level of national education in the field of physical sciences in the first half of the 20th century.

One of the main difficulties that students have in learning astronomy topics is that they fail to relate theoretical information with what they experience in the world around them. The construction by students of a conceptual framework in accordance with the astronomical scientific model demands changes in the current teaching approach. Within this framework, Cultural Astronomy (CA) is a discipline that we can use to rethink new didactic strategies. This paper presents two contextualized proposals from CA. In the first one, the teaching of space and time concepts is approached through traditional examples of orientation by the stars and the use of the calendar, using the case of historical ocean navigation without advanced instruments already highlighted in ethnoastronomical studies. In the second, these concepts are worked on from a case study, this time archaeoastronomical: the monumental horizon calendar of the Chankillo archaeological site, and then continue with the local identification of horizon markers that allow students to build their own calendars. The aim is to illustrate ways of introducing CA elements in didactic units that have as one of their main objectives that the students manage to establish correspondences between constructions of the micro to the mega-space that surrounds them.

There are vast educational research works that highlight the serious difficulties that students present in learning astronomical subjects, as well as the prevalence of a traditional education distanced from the observational and experiential, thus accentuating the difficulties detected. We argue that progressive teaching with a topocentric and contextualized approach would favor the motivation of the students, the construction of a more real view of current science and a more active role in the learning process. Cultural Astronomy (CA) is an academic discipline that seeks to understand the multiple ways in which societies relate to celestial objects and phenomena. For this reason, we consider that it would be a powerful resource for teaching, since it provides tools for contextualization and allows working with sky experiences linked to "naked eye astronomy", which requires little or no instruments. It should be noted that CA involves aspects of archaeoastronomy, ethnoastronomy and the history of astronomy, thus offering multiple dimensions to take into account. The present work seeks to base the incorporation of CA studies for astronomy teaching in secondary and tertiary education.

The Caral civilization developed on the north-central coast of Peru and had an occupation period between 2870 and 1970 years BC. The first studies carried out in the field of archaeoastronomy showed evidence of possible astronomical orientations in some buildings of its capital city, the Ciudad Sagrada de Caral. However, methodological issues cast doubt on these conclusions. A recent study carried out a more general statistical analysis, which covered a total of 55 architectural structures distributed in ten urban settlements that were part of this civilization, thus managing to identify topographic and astronomical orientation patterns. Based on this evidence, we propose to carry out a new study focused on the capital city, with the objective of analyzing the orientation pattern of the city, placing emphasis on the analysis of the most important religious and administrative structures in order to determine their functionality and their possible links with relevant astronomical objects. The study will include field work to measure the various structures and the subsequent statistical analysis of the data, using declination histograms, density functions and probability tests.

We use standard tools of Archaeoastronomy to approach the study of orientations, possibly astronomical, of a group of colonial Christian churches. We present preliminary results of the analysis of the precise spatial orientation of nearly fifty chapels and churches of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura (Spain), most of them built from the period of the Norman conquest in the fifteenth century to the nineteenth century. Although some small chapels belonging to the manorial power of the island and other modern churches do not have a well-defined pattern of orientations, the vast majority of the religious constructions of the island (about 35 of the 48 analyzed) have their axis oriented within the solar range, between the extreme azimuths of the annual movement of the Sun when crossing the local horizon. Unlike what was found in other islands of the archipelago, these results suggest that the religious architecture of Fuerteventura faithfully follows the prescriptions contained in the texts of early Christian writers.

We study the Jesuit mission churches in America, which for almost two centuries were the most representative constructions in the process of Christian evangelisation on the continent until the expulsion of the Order in 1767. The main objective is to discern possible orientation patterns in the structures studied and to evaluate whether these orientations are related to the rising of the sun or other celestial bodies on the local horizon, as suggested by the texts of early Christian writers, which could provide important and novel information about their history and construction. Archaeoastronomical fieldwork has been carried out in the past in two large regions of South America: the historic provinces of Paraquaria and Chiquitanía (eastern present-day Bolivia). These data must now be interpreted within a broader cultural and geographical context. Thus, in order to obtain a more complete picture of religious architecture on the continent, it is necessary to analyse and compare the results with the orientation of Jesuit churches built in the 17th and 18th centuries in North America (viceroyalty of New Spain). We approached this project through the historical and cultural analysis of the former mission sites and by means of satellite imagery. In this paper we present some preliminary results we have reached.

The Jesuit missions in South America were an important and unique advance in Christian evangelisation on the continent until the expulsion of the Order in 1767. Although the history and cultural aspects of these missions and their most iconic buildings have been extensively studied, the archaeoastronomy of the Guaraní peoples of the Province of Paraquaria (Province of Paraguay) has only been recently considered, with the existing studies focusing primarily on the orientation of their churches. The paper presented here, which is the first archaeoastronomical study of the Jesuit missions of Chiquitos in eastern Bolivia, is an attempt to continue and complement the previous archaeoastronomical studies of the region. The methodologies employed involved the analysis of the Jesuit churches that currently exist in this region, namely, the on-site measurements of the orientations of eight churches currently standing and the ruins of a ninth church of which only a free-standing bell tower and parts of the side walls remain preserved. The orientation measurements of a tenth church, which we were unable to visit, were determined via the use of satellite maps. The landscape surrounding these churches was then examined in detail and furthermore, a detailed cultural and historical study of the characteristics of the villages where the churches are located was carried out. Our results show that, unlike the churches of the Province of Paraquaria where meridian orientations in the north-south direction stand out, half of the studied churches have shown potential canonical orientations that seem to be aligned to solar phenomena, with three exhibiting precise equinoctial orientation. We propose reasons for these orientations, including the possible relevance of illumination effects on significant internal elements within the churches - effects that were generally sought in Baroque church architecture.

In this paper we consider Montevideo's liberal progressive atmosphere towards the end of the nineteenth century and, within it, the trajectory of young science student Enrique Loedel Palumbo. We discuss some of his activities in Argentina, where he moved to study Physics at a new and well-equipped Physics Institute at the National University of La Plata, where he would later become a leading figure. Initially Loedel Palumbo worked on the structure of complex molecules based on their magnetic, electric and optical properties. Later, when Einstein visited Argentina in 1925, he had chance to exchange ideas, which led to the publication of the first of a series of papers on the Theory of Relativity in some of Germany's leading scientific journals. Loedel Palumbo integrated fully with the intellectual life of his adopted country, becoming one of Argentina's top physicists and philosophers of science of his day. He is a valuable example of the deep intertwining of the intellectual life of Uruguay and Argentina in the first-half of the twentieth century. Like his Argentine colleagues, he also experienced the consequences of living through a complex historical period.

We present a study of the relationship between astronomy and landscape centered on the orientation of Christian churches of the island of La Gomera, located in the Canary Archipelago. The fieldwork consisted of measuring the precise coordinates of 38 churches, which represents almost all of the island's religious constructions, which has an area of approximately 370 km2. For each church, we measured the azimuth and the angular height of the horizon taken in the direction towards which the altar of each temple points. The data obtained were corroborated with digital terrain models frequently used in archaeoastronomical studies. Finally, for the study of the sample, various analyzes were carried out: statistical, calendarical and orographic, trying to find clues that would allow us to understand the pattern of orientations found. From this analysis, we can infer that in some places the canonical tradition of orienting Christian temples in the solar range was respected. Also, it is possible that a few constructions were oriented with imitation patterns of the aborigine cult, especially in solstitial directions. However, we find that the orientation of the majority of the churches is towards the northeast and, in the absence of a better justification, we think that reason should be sought more in the terrestrial landscape than in the celestial one. Judging by the way in which several small groups of temples are distributed, we estimate this unusual pattern of global orientations is motivated by the particular orography of the island. A significant proportion of churches seems to adapt to the characteristics of their sites, orienting themselves according to the numerous geographical features where they are located. These results allow us to conjecture that the known "abrupt nature" of La Gomera is perhaps the main reason for the particular pattern of orientations of its worship sanctuaries.

With his flexed knee he presses the back of the animal and holds its head with his left hand, while with his right hand he stabs a dagger into the neck of the beast. Referring to this representation of the sacrifice of the bull, or tauroctony, Fritz Saxl once wrote that he could not imagine another case in which the birth of an image could be observed with such precision. Although the complete iconography of the Mithras cult varies substantially from one sanctuary to another, the tauroctony, an element always present in all temples, is considered key to its ideology. This image was not neglected by Aby Warburg and was reproduced in abundance in Panel 8 on the Ascension towards the Sun in his Bilderatlas Mnemosyne. In this work we propose to make a journey through the life of this image that, very early on, was related to the constellations, to the great circles of the celestial sphere and to certain singular moments of the seasonal cycle. We will conclude with a critical analysis of recent speculations that bring into play subtle aspects of the movement of the sky, driven by a powerful god who resided beyond the stars, and relate them to the symbolic death of the bull.

We discuss the peculiar planning of the city of San Cristobal de La Laguna, in the Canary Island of Tenerife (Spain), when compared to the nearby and essentially contemporary Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which served as a maritime port of the former city. For this we review our previous study of the exact spatial orientation of twenty-one historic Christian churches currently existing in the old part of La Laguna, which we compare with the analysis of six similar buildings located in Santa Cruz, and presented here for the first time. In both cities, we take the spatial orientation of historic churches as good indicators of the original layout of the respective urban lattices. Although we find a clear orientation pattern for La Laguna, which singles out an absolute-value astronomical declination slightly below 20 degrees, pointing to a preferred date close to the July 25th feast-day of San Cristobal de Licia, in the case of Santa Cruz this trend is not followed. On the contrary, the pattern we find for Santa Cruz, within the uncertainties due to the low statistics, and apart from one equinoctial and one solstitial oriented churches, is consistent with an orographic orientation within the canonic limits of sunrise. This result highlights the uniqueness of the city of La Laguna, and supports the idea suggesting its deliberate planning in the early 16th century.

The city of San Cristobal de La Laguna in the Canary Island of Tenerife (Spain) has an exceptional value due to the original conception of its plan. It is an urban system in a grid, outlined by straight streets that form squares, its layout being the first case of an unfortified colonial city with a regular plan in the overseas European expansion. It constitutes a historical example of the so-called "Town of Peace", the archetype of a city-republic in a new land that employed its own natural boundaries to delimit and defend itself. Founded in 1496, the historical centre of the old city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. We analyse the exact spatial orientation of twenty-one historic Christian churches currently existing in the old part of La Laguna which we take as a good indicator of the original layout of the urban lattice. We find a clear orientation pattern that, if correlated with the rising or setting Sun, singles out an absolute-value astronomical declination slightly below 20 degrees, which, within the margin of error of our study, might be associated with the July 25th feast-day of San Cristobal de Licia, the saint to whom the town was originally dedicated. We also discuss at some length some recent proposals which invoke somewhat far-fetched hypotheses for the planimetry of the old city and finish up with some comments on one of its outstanding features, namely its Latin-cross structure, which is apparent in the combined layout of some of its most emblematic churches.

In this paper we discuss the importance of studying the orientation of ancient Christian churches, as a complement to the historical and cultural research of the temples. We present preliminary results of the analysis of the precise spatial orientation of 38 colonial churches located on the Canary Island of La Gomera (Spain). The sample suggests that, although several churches have a canonical orientation within the solar range, a large proportion of them follow a pattern of orientations that is compatible with the steep orography of the island and, therefore, contrasts with the prescriptions contained in the texts of the early Christian writers.

The heritage Andean churches of Arica and Parinacota are representative of the majority of Christian churches in the region. Judging by their architecture, materiality and decoration, they have many features in common and are faithful to the intentions of their original builders. However, their geographical locations and the landscape that surrounds these churches show specific features for each of them. In particular, the orientation of the main axes (towards the altar of the churches) shows some diversity. In this extended area, with little attention from parish priests, the local Aymara culture, with its own worldview, surely engaged in a dialogue with the Western tradition in order to design and build the Indian Reductions. In this paper we present the results obtained from the analysis of the precise spatial orientations of all the cataloged churches, employing the tools of archaeoastronomy, as a complement to the architectural, historical and cultural research of the temples. We also comment briefly on some progress that we hope to make in neighboring areas to the region here studied, which include a large number of very old temples and are part, along with the churches here considered, of a common and widespread cultural koine.

According to popular tradition, the Canarian city of San Cristobal de La Laguna, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1999, emerged in the early sixteenth century with a novel organization, in line with a new peaceful social order inspired by the religious doctrine of the millennium and its expression through urban design [...] In this paper we briefly discuss some details of these ideas, which propose a planned geometric origin for the city, and the original sources on which they are based. We then look for other indications that in a simpler way might explain some of the notable characteristics of the order and design of La Laguna, where over time a model of traditional Canarian architecture was installed that, during the 17th century, was populated with civil and religious constructions (churches, chapels and convents) with notable creations in carpentry of Mudejar origin, for example coming from the lower Andalusia. To conclude, we show our precise analysis of the orientation of almost all the historical churches and chapels of the city, taken together as an indicator of its planimetry. This study employs the usual tools of archaeoastronomy as a complement to the historical and cultural research of religious constructions. We will see then that a new -- and simpler -- interpretation of the spatial distribution of the city is possible.

We present the results obtained from the analysis of the precise spatial orientations of almost forty old colonial Christian churches located in the Arica and Parinacota region. This is an extended and difficult to travel area that received little attention from parish priests, and where one might expect some dialogue to have taken place between the Western tradition and the local Aymara culture in regard to the design and construction of temples. We also briefly comment on our plans to explore neighboring areas to the region here studied, which include many additional historical constructions that share similar cultural traditions.

However, the daily motion of the Sun has some subtleties, for example, with regards to the precise time at which it crosses the meridian near noon. When the Sun is on the meridian, a clock is used to ascertain this time and a vertical stick determines the angle the Sun is above the horizon. These two measurements lead to the construction of a diagram (called an analemma) as an extremely useful resource for the teaching of astronomy. In this paper we report on the construction of this diagram from roughly weekly observations during more than a year.

In previous works we have considered various aspects of the reception of the theories of Albert Einstein in our country. In particular, we discussed the impact of his visit to Argentina in 1925, and the precise content of the conferences and scientific publications that Einstein communicated while he was here. We have also discussed, critically, different documents on topics related to the theory of relativity published in the country during the first decades of the last century, in which the technical level was extremely varied. Finally, we have dealt with a forgotten document, which Einstein prepared for his visit but, once in the country, thought it convenient not to communicate. In the present work, which is part of that same line of research, we propose to consider the scientific, cultural and pedagogical career of Enrique Loedel Palumbo (1901-1962), who was one of the main local actors during Einstein's visit to Argentina. He was also one of the founders of the research on relativity issues in the Rio de la Plata. In addition to his strictly scientific interests, Loedel Palumbo took seriously the pedagogy of science and became interested in philosophical, cultural and artistic problems of his time.

We present a brief review of the impact that Albert Einstein's visit to Argentina had on the scientific community and on the general public. Among other particularities, his visit was, at a certain point, somewhat disconcerting: not only because of the complexity of his ideas, but also because of his appearance, which did not fit with the image of the wise visitor firmly seated in the minds of his interlocutors. His openness and tendency to ironize, especially in his first interviews with the press, first disorientated journalists and later also some members of his intellectual audience. Einstein, then, forced a revision of both the image of the wise man and that of spacetime.

We present the analysis of the measured orientations of 30 churches of the island of Lanzarote, in the Canarian archipelago, built prior to 1810, as well as a few buildings of later times, which represent a nearly complete sample of all the island's Christian sanctuaries. Our study indicates that a definite orientation pattern was followed on the island but, unlike what is often found in most of the Christian world, it has two interpretations. On the one hand, the representative orientation to the east (or west) is present. However, the sample has also a marked orientation towards north-northeast which is, as far as we know, a pattern exclusive to Lanzarote. We discuss the reasons for this pattern and suggest that one possible explanation could be a rather prosaic one, namely, that sometimes needs of everyday life are more relevant than --and push individuals to make decisions at odds with-- religious beliefs. This work is the beginning of the first systematic archaeoastronomical study ever conducted with old churches in the Canary Islands [abridged].

The orientation of Christian churches is a well-known distinctive feature of their architecture. There is a general tendency to align their apses in the solar range, favoring orientations close to the east (astronomical equinox), although the alignments in the opposite direction, namely, with the apse towards the west, are not unusual. The case of the churches built in northwest Africa before the arrival of Islam is paradigmatic in this regard, and may reflect earlier traditions. The Canary Islands is the western end of this North African cultural koine, so we thought it would be relevant to study a compact set of old churches in one of the islands of the archipelago, choosing to start our project with Lanzarote. We have measured the orientation of a total of 30 churches built prior to 1810, as well as a few buildings of later times, nearly a complete sample of all the island Christian sanctuaries. The analysis of this sample indicates that a definite orientation pattern was followed on the island but, unlike the standard one often found in most of the Christian world, this prototype is twofold. On the one hand, the representative orientation to the east (or west) is present. However, the sample has also a marked orientation towards the north-northeast, which is as far as we know a pattern exclusive of Lanzarote. We analyze the reasons for this rule and suggest that one possible explanation could be a rather prosaic one, namely, that sometimes earthly needs are more relevant than religious beliefs.

Fixing the shadows while moving the gnomon

One of its branches, archaeoastronomy, focuses on the material remains of past peoples and tries to investigate their practices and astronomical knowledge. In this context, the orientation of Christian churches is now considered a distinctive feature of their architecture that repeats patterns from early Christian times. There is a general tendency to align their altars in the solar range, with preference for orientations towards the east. Here we present recent data from our measurements of astronomical orientations of old churches located in two --geographically and culturally-- very distant regions, and we discuss the results in the light of the historical and cultural knowledge surrounding these temples.

These words refer to the spiritual ascent, present in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and crystallized in the visions of prophets and Catholic saints. Genesis (18: 10-22) narrates that Jacob, going to Haran, slept on some stones and saw a ladder between heaven and earth along which angels were ascending and descending. From this dream, the symbolic union between heaven and earth has been figured with stairs, ascribing to it different meanings over the centuries. On the steps of the ladder people saw a metaphor for the graduality of ascent; Benedict used a ladder of twelve steps of humility in his Regula, and in the seventh century AD John Climacus, Bishop of Sinai, established a thirty-step Scala Paradisi of meditation leading to God. In this work we discuss the historical echoes of the Benedictine rule, together with Climacus' voice in the desert and the visualization of celestial mysteries, in the case of the Cuzco school painting Allegory of the firmament, with the representation of the planets' seven heavens (XVIII century). In this way we try and analyze the intersection between science and mysticism in the representation of the heavenly stairs, in order to show the cultural anchorage of the symbology employed in these cases [abridged].

A flat surface and three bent semi-rigid wires (representing the three solar arcs during solstices and equinoxes) will do the job. On the other hand, since very early times, there have been famous armillary spheres built and employed by the most outstanding astronomers for the description of the celestial movements. In those instruments, many of them now considered true works of art, Earth lies in the center of the cosmos and the observer looks at the whole "from the outside." Of course, both devices, the scale model of the sky and the armillary sphere, serve to represent the movement of the Sun, and in this paper we propose to show their equivalence by a simple construction. Knowing the basics underlying the operation of the armillary sphere will give us confidence to use it as a teaching resource in school.

The parallel globe is an old, very simple and ingenious device that, when systematically employed in astronomy classes, becomes a teaching tool with great potential. Properly oriented according to the local meridian, this instrument allows us to follow the shadows in any region of the Earth that is illuminated by the Sun, as well as offering a clear view of the terminator, the fast-moving grey line that divides the day from the night on our planet. With knowledge of the shadows, it is possible to estimate the latitude of a site and to infer local solar time anywhere in the planet's sunlit hemisphere. Furthermore, by using the parallel globe we may understand simply the existence of regions in which objects sometimes do not cast shadows, and also other regions which, on the contrary, sometimes become "long-shadow" countries. In this work, we first review the device and the basics of its assembly and operation. In the second part, we describe in detail some activities targeted to facilitate its use in the classroom, which our research group has been developing during teacher training workshops.

Cultural heritage relating to the sky in the form of sundials, old observatories and the like, are commonly found in many cities in the Old World, but rarely in the New. This paper examines astronomical heritage embodied in the Barolo Palace in Buenos Aires. While references to Dante Alighieri and his poetry are scattered in streets, buildings and monuments around the Western world, in the city of Buenos Aires, the only street carrying Dante's name is less than three blocks long and, appropriately, is a continuation of Virgilio street. A couple of Italian immigrants -a wealthy businessman, Luis Barolo, and an imaginative architect, Mario Palanti- foresaw this situation nearly a century ago, and did not save any efforts or money with the aim of getting Dante and his cosmology an appropriate monumental recognition, in reinforced concrete. The Barolo Palace is a unique combination of both astronomy and the worldview displayed in the Divine Comedy, Dante's poetic masterpiece. It is known that the Palace's design was inspired by the great poet, but the details are not recorded; this paper relies on Dante's text to consider whether it may add to our understanding of the building. Although the links of the Palace's main architectural structure with the three realms of the Comedy have been studied in the past, its unique astronomical flavor has not been sufficiently emphasized. The word of God, as interpreted by the Fathers of the Church in Sacred Scripture, Aristotle's physics and Ptolemy's astronomy, all beautifully converge in Dante's verses, and the Barolo Palace reflects this.

In the research field on the "images of scientists" that appear in fictional literature, we focus on a set of tales produced by students of secondary school. Our aim is to connect some traits of the stereotypical scientist that appear in those texts with the traits underlying other cultural productions, since those productions may constitute the probable source of the stereotype. Many common representations of the scientist emerge from an image of science that is inadequate from the point of view of science teaching. It correlates to a lack of interest towards science courses. This lack of interest would contribute to stagnation in the number of students pursuing science and technology careers in Ibero-America in general and especially in Argentina.

Paraná Ra'anga (the image of Paraná, in Guaraní) is the name of a cultural and scientific expedition that traveled the rivers: Río de la Plata, Paraná and Paraguay, from Buenos Aires to Asunción, during March 2010. The project brought together some forty scientists and artists from three countries in a slow and enriching cruise, putting in active contact actors from different backgrounds and disciplines -which usually run separately- in the framework of an unusual space-time experience. The project recovers the historical tradition of the trip as an instrument of knowledge and collaboration between the arts and sciences, necessary to build new ways of seeing and understanding the river and its banks. This article reports on the motivations of this project and its projection.

It is well known that the length and orientation of a shadow cast by a vertical gnomon depends on the time of the day and on the season of the year. But it also depends on the latitude of the site of observation. During the equinoxes, the temporal sequence of the shadows cast by each of the points that form any object follows a straight line from west to east. A simple construction using sticks and threads can be used to materialize the plane of celestial equator's local projection, giving us a way to calculate our astronomical latitude during daytime with high precision.

Within this intellectual frame, the knowledge of the "saros cycle" (a cycle of 18 years, 10 or 11 days and 1/3 of a day that separates two successive sun or moon eclipses of similar features), inherited by the Greeks from the Babylonians, favored important theoretical developments in the West. The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly and schematically, a) the ancient theorizations on the causes of eclipses, b) the range of predictability of eclipses in Antiquity, c) the warnings -transmitted by some classical writers- to those who want to observe in naked eyes a solar eclipse, and d) the popular beliefs and social practices upon the occurrence of unexpected eclipses in ancient times.

In no other epoch of Western history like in the Middle Ages, cosmology was so key an element of culture and, one way or another, the motion of the heavens ended up impregnating the literature of that time. Among the most noteworthy poets we find Dante Alighieri, who became famous for his Commedia, a monumental poem written roughly between 1307 and his death in 1321, and which the critics from XVIth century onwards dubbed Divina. In this and other works, Dante pictures the cosmic image for the world, summing up the current trends of Neoplatonic and Islamic traditions. The Barolo Palace in the city of Buenos Aires is a singular combination of both astronomy and the worldview displayed in Dante's poetic masterpiece. Some links of the Palace's main architectural structure with the three realms of the Comedy have been studied in the past. In this note we consider its unique astronomical flavor, an issue which has not been sufficiently emphasized yet.

Observing the early years of the 1920's, it is possible to detect a fracture in the perception of relativity theory in Argentina, characterized by the publication of a series of strictly scientific studies on this theory, in parallel with presentations aimed at the general culture. In this work, we attempt to relate this fracture with the advances made by Anti-Positivist ideas in the higher echelons of Argentine culture. The new philosophical approach configured a new vision of science that questioned the traditional methodology of the experimental sciences and attributed to the theoretical sciences a more prominent role than they had in the past. In this work, we present a detailed account of a 1923 paper by José B. Collo and Teófilo Isnardi, two young Argentine physicists trained in Germany, which is a representative contribution to this new trend.

The small community of the Tomaraho, an ethnic group culturally derived from the Zamucos, became known in the South American and world anthropological scenario in recent times. This group, far from the banks of the Paraguay river, remained concealed from organized modern societies for many years. Like any other groups of people in close contact with nature, the Tomaraho developed a profound and rich world view which parallels other more widely researched aboriginal cultures as well as showing distinctive features of their own. This is also apparent in their imagery of the sky and of the characters that are closely connected with the celestial sphere. This paper is based on the lengthy anthropological studies of G. Sequera. We have recently undertaken a project to carry out a detailed analysis of the different astronomical elements present in the imagined sky of the Tomaraho and other Chamacoco ethnic groups. We will briefly review some aspects of this aboriginal culture: places where they live, regions of influence in the past, their linguistic family, their living habits and how the advancement of civilization affected their culture and survival. We will later mention the fieldwork carried out for decades and some of the existing studies and publications. We will also make a brief description of the methodology of this work and special anthropological practices. Last but not least, we will focus on the Tomaraho conception of the sky as well as describe the research work we have been doing in recent times.

In fact, those answers correctly describe observations only during the equinoxes, when either autumn or spring begin. Once we recall this, the next natural question to ask ourselves is: how far from the east (or from the west) the rising (or setting) Sun is located for a given latitude of the observer and for a given day of the year. In this paper we supply some simple tools to easily visualize the angular (southward or northward) departure of the rising and setting Sun on the horizon from the east-west direction in a pictorial way, without the need of mathematics. These tools have proven a valuable resource in teaching introductory physics and astronomy courses.

We perform a situational diagnosis in topics of astronomy of pre-service elementary teachers in order to try and develop didactic tools that better collaborate with their formal education. In this work we present the instrument we designed to put in evidence some of the most frequently used models on a few basic astronomical notions endowed by them. We work with an open written questionnaire comprising a limited but representative group of basic astronomical notions. We discuss the results of two first pilot tests, provided to 30 individuals, and we comment on the necessary changes applied to the instrument in order to design the final questionnaire, which was then provided to another group of 51 pre-service elementary teachers. A detailed qualitative analysis of the answers revealed many well-known alternative conceptions, and others that seem new. We find that prospective teachers have a hard time in trying to explain the movements of the Moon and its phases. They also meet difficulties to recognize and explain a couple of astronomical elements that make part of our ordinary language, like the origin of a shooting star and the real identity of the "lucero" (i.e., planet Venus). Amongst the answers offered to explain the causes of the seasons, we found a singular causality, which we think has not been sufficiently emphasized in the literature so far. Many of the inquired people did not advance an explicative model -a cause: say, the tilt of the Earth's axis- to justify a particular phenomenon -the effect: the seasons on the Earth-, but rather made use of another phenomenon/effect, in the present case related to the climate, in order to explain the seasons. However, as we know, this phenomenon/effect (the climate) has a strong astronomical component. We present here the full results of the first two tests and of the final instrument employed, and we draw some conclusions.

Recent studies have shown that not only primary school students but also their future teachers reach science courses with pre-constructed and consistent models of the world surrounding them. These ideas include many misconceptions which turn out to be robust and hence make difficult an appropriate teaching-learning process. We have designed some tools that proved helpful in putting in evidence some of the most frequently used alternative models on a few basic astronomical notions. We have tested these tools with preservice elementary teachers from various normal schools in Buenos Aires and made a first analysis of the results. The collection of data recovered so far shows that some non-scientific conceptions are indeed part of the prospective teachers' (scientific) background and that, therefore, the issue deserves special attention during their formal training.

A didactic sequence of activities on some topics of Astronomy, related mainly with the length and orientation of shadows cast by a gnomon, the movement of shadows during daytime in different seasons of the year, and finding the true astronomical North, is fully developed. It also includes a discussion of observations from different frames of reference and of some topics in the history of science to enrich a debate among students, as well as the construction of a simplified model for the apparent displacement of the Sun, and of a sundial, and their use as resources to discuss some common misconceptions found in students. Multiple suggestions and clear guides are given for teachers of secondary education to implement theses activities in their classes.
