We propose a new realisation of light Dirac neutrino mass and dark matter (DM) within the framework of a non-Abelian discrete flavour symmetry based on $A_4$ group. In addition to $A_4$, we also consider a $Z_2$ and an unbroken global lepton number symmetry $U(1)_L$ to keep unwanted terms away while guaranteeing the Dirac nature of light neutrinos. The field content, their transformations and flavon vacuum alignments are chosen in such a way that the type-I Dirac seesaw generates only one light Dirac neutrino mass while the other two masses arise from scotogenic contributions at one-loop. This leads to the Dirac scoto-seesaw framework, a generalisation of the widely studied scoto-seesaw model to Dirac neutrinos. The symmetry breaking of $A_4$ leaves a remnant $\mathcal{Z}_2$ symmetry responsible for stabilising DM. Dirac nature of light neutrinos introduces additional relativistic degrees of freedom $ΔN_{\rm eff}$ within reach of cosmic microwave background experiments.

We discuss fluctuations of conserved charges and show that at present the qualitative comparison of the model predictions with the Lattice QCD data should be treated with care. We also discuss the principle of detailed balance which allows to study the magnetic field dependence of neutral resonances.

We propose a hybrid scoto-seesaw model based on the $A_4$ non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetry. Light neutrino masses come from the tree-level type-I seesaw mechanism and from the one-loop scotogenic contribution accommodating viable dark matter candidates responsible for observed relic abundance of dark matter (DM). Respectively, both these contributions restore the atmospheric and solar neutrino mass scales. With only one right-handed neutrino, the model features specific predictions with the normal ordering of light neutrino masses, the lightest neutrino being massless, and only one relevant CP Majorana phase. The flavor symmetric setup helps us to realize the TM$_1$ mixing scheme with concrete correlations and constraints on the mixing angles and associated CP phases. The framework predicts the atmospheric mixing angle to be in the upper octant with specific ranges $0.531 (0.580) \leq \sin^2θ_{23}\leq 0.544 (0.595)$ and the Dirac CP phase is restricted within the range $\pm(1.44-1.12)$ radian. The Majorana phase is also tightly constrained with a range of $0.82-0.95$ and $1.58-1.67$ radian, which is otherwise unconstrained from neutrino oscillations. Strict predictions on the Majorana phases also yield an accurate prediction for the effective mass parameter for neutrinoless double beta within the range of $1.61-3.85$ meV. The model offers a rich phenomenology regarding DM relic density and direct search constraints, and the fermionic DM scenario has been discussed in detail, estimating its possible connection with the neutrino sector. As an example of the model studies at colliders, the SM Higgs in the diphoton decay channel is examined. The model predicts strictly vanishing $τ\to eγ$, $τ\rightarrow 3e$ decays and testable signals by MEG-II and SINDRUM/Mu3e experiments for the $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to 3 e$ decays, respectively.

The observed pattern of fermion masses and mixing is an outstanding puzzle in particle physics, generally known as the flavor problem. Over the years, guided by precision neutrino oscillation data, discrete flavor symmetries have often been used to explain the neutrino mixing parameters, which look very different from the quark sector. In this review, we discuss the application of non-Abelian finite groups to the theory of neutrino masses and mixing in the light of current and future neutrino oscillation data. We start with an overview of the neutrino mixing parameters, comparing different global fit results and limits on normal and inverted neutrino mass ordering schemes. Then, we discuss a general framework for implementing discrete family symmetries to explain neutrino masses and mixing. We discuss CP violation effects, giving an update of CP predictions for trimaximal models with nonzero reactor mixing angle and models with partial $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry, and constraining models with neutrino mass sum rules. The connection between texture zeroes and discrete symmetries is also discussed. We summarize viable higher-order groups, which can explain the observed pattern of lepton mixing where the non-zero $θ_{13}$ plays an important role. We also review the prospects of embedding finite discrete symmetries in the Grand Unified Theories and with extended Higgs fields. Models based on modular symmetry are also briefly discussed. A major part of the review is dedicated to the phenomenology of flavor symmetries and possible signatures in the current and future experiments at the intensity, energy, and cosmic frontiers. In this context, we discuss flavor symmetry implications for neutrinoless double beta decay, collider signals, leptogenesis, dark matter, as well as gravitational waves.

We use two approaches: i) We calculate high-$p_\perp$ $R_{AA}$ and flow coefficients $v_2$, $v_3$ and $v_4$ assuming different $(η/s)(T)$ of the fluid-dynamically evolving medium. ii) We calculate the quenching strength ($\hat{q}/T^3$) from our dynamical energy loss model and convert it to $η/s$ as a function of temperature. It turned out that the first approach can not distinguish between different $(η/s)(T)$ assumptions when the evolution is constrained to reproduce the low-$p_\perp$ data. In distinction, $(η/s)(T)$ calculated using the second approach agrees surprisingly well with the $(η/s)(T)$ inferred through state-of-the-art Bayesian analyses of the low-$p_\perp$ data even in the vicinity of $T_c$, while providing much smaller uncertainties at high temperatures.

To understand the observed pattern of neutrino masses and mixing as well as to account for the dark matter we propose a hybrid scoto-seesaw model based on the $A_4$ discrete flavor symmetry. In this setup, including at least two heavy right-handed neutrinos is essential to employ the discrete flavor symmetry that mimics once popular tribimaximal neutrino mixing at the leading order via type-I seesaw. The scotogenic contribution then acts as a critical deviation to reproduce the observed value of the reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ (within the trimaximal mixing scheme) and to accommodate potential dark matter candidates, pointing towards a common origin of $θ_{13}$ and dark matter. The model predicts the atmospheric angle to be in the upper octant, excludes some regions on the Dirac CP phase, and restricts the Majorana phases too. Further, normal and inverted mass hierarchies can be distinguished for specific values of the relative phases associated with the complex light neutrino mass matrix. Owing to the considered flavor symmetry, contributions coming from the scotogenic mechanism towards the lepton flavor violating decays such as $μ\rightarrow e γ$, $τ\rightarrow e γ$ vanish, and a lower limit on the second right-handed neutrino mass can be obtained. Prediction for the effective mass parameter appearing in the neutrinoless double beta decay falls within the sensitivity of future experiments such as LEGEND-1k and nEXO.

We study the collective modes of gluons in an anisotropic thermal medium in the presence of a constant background magnetic field using the hard-thermal loop (HTL) perturbation theory. The momentum space anisotropy of the medium has been incorporated through the generalized $`$Romatschke-Strickland' form of the distribution function, whereas, the magnetic modification arising from the quark loop contribution has been taken into account in the lowest Landau level approximation. We consider two special cases: (i) a spheroidal anisotropy with the anisotropy vector orthogonal to the external magnetic field and (ii) an ellipsoidal anisotropy with two mutually orthogonal vectors describing aniostropies along and orthogonal to the field direction. The general structure of the polarization tensor in both cases are equivalent and consists of six independent basis tensors. We find that the introduction of momentum anisotropy ingrains azimuthal angular dependence in the thermo-magnetic collective modes. Our study suggests that the presence of a strong background magnetic field can significantly reduce the growth rate of the unstable modes which may have important implications in the equilibration of magnetized quark-gluon plasma.

It turns out that the framework, originated due to a specific flavor structure, favors the normal hierarchy of light neutrinos and simultaneously narrows down the range of Dirac CP violating phase. It predicts an interesting correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle and the Dirac CP phase too. While the flavor structure indicates an exact degeneracy of the right handed neutrino masses, renormalization group running of the same from a high scale is shown to make it quasi-degenerate and a successful flavor leptogenesis takes place within the allowed parameter space obtained from neutrino phenomenology.

It is shown that the general structure of the gluon self-energy can be written in terms of six linearly independent projection tensors. Similar to the spheroidal anisotropy, mass scales can be introduced for each of the collective modes considering the static limits. With a simplified ellipsoidal generalization of the Romatschke-Strickland form, the angular dependencies of the mass scales are studied. It is observed that, compared to the spheroidal case, additional unstable mode may appear in presence of ellipsoidal anisotropy depending upon the choice of the parameters.

Section 1 reviews experimental results of some recent light-flavored particle production data from ALICE collaboration. Other sections are mostly theoretical in nature.
Very strong but transient magnetic field created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions could have important observational consequences. This has generated a lot of theoretical activity in the last decade. Sections 2, 7, 9, 10 and 11 deal with the effects of the magnetic field on the properties of the QCD matter. There are several unanswered questions about the QCD phase diagram. Sections 3, 11 and 18 discuss various aspects of the QCD phase diagram and phase transitions.
Recent years have witnessed interesting developments in foundational aspects of hydrodynamics and their application to heavy-ion collisions. Sections 12, 15, 16 and 17 of this article probe some aspects of this exciting field.
Transport coefficients together with their temperature- and density-dependence, are essential inputs in hydrodynamical calculations. Sections 5, 8 and 14 deal with calculation/estimation of various transport coefficients (shear and bulk viscosity, thermal conductivity, relaxation times, etc.) of quark matter and hadronic matter.
Sections 4, 6 and 13 deals with interesting new developments in the field. Section 4 discusses color dipole gluon distribution function at small transverse momentum in the form of a series of Bells polynomials. Section 6 discusses the properties of Higgs boson in the quark gluon plasma using Higgs-quark interaction. Section 13 discusses modification of coalescence model to incorporate viscous corrections and application of this model.

We consider weakly magnetized hot QED plasma comprising electrons and positrons. There are three distinct dispersive (longitudinal and two transverse) modes of a photon in a thermo-magnetic medium. At lowest order in coupling constant, photon is damped in this medium via Compton scattering and pair creation process. We evaluate the damping rate of hard photon by calculating the imaginary part of the each transverse dispersive modes in a thermo-magnetic QED medium. We note that one of the fermions in the loop of one-loop photon self-energy is considered as soft and the other one is hard. Considering the resummed fermion propagator in a weakly magnetized medium for the soft fermion and the Schwinger propagator for hard fermion, we calculate the soft contribution to the damping rate of hard photon. In weak field approximation the thermal and thermo-magnetic contributions to damping rate get separated out for each transverse dispersive mode. The total damping rate for each dispersive mode in presence of magnetic field is found to be reduced than that of the thermal one. This formalism can easily be extended to QCD plasma.

We study a discrete flavour symmetric scenario for neutrino mass and dark matter under the circumstances where such global discrete symmetries can be explicitly broken at Planck scale, possibly by gravitational effects. Such explicit breaking of discrete symmetries mimic as Planck suppressed operators in the model which can have non-trivial consequences for neutrino and dark matter sectors. In particular, we study a flavour symmetric model which, at renormalisable level, gives rise to tri-bimaximal type neutrino mixing with vanishing reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}=0$, a stable inert scalar doublet behaving like a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) and a stable singlet inert fermion which does not interact with any other particles. The introduction of Planck suppressed operators which explicitly break the discrete symmetries, can give rise to the generation of non-zero $θ_{13}$ in agreement with neutrino data and also open up decay channels of inert scalar doublet into singlet neutral inert fermion leading to the realisation of the super-WIMP dark matter scenario. We show that the correct neutrino phenomenology can be obtained in this model while discussing three distinct realisation of the super-WIMP dark matter scenario.

We investigate the consequences of $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry in presence of a light sterile neutrino for the $3+1$ neutrino mixing scheme. We discuss the implications of total $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry as well partial $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry. For the total $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry we find values of $θ_{23}$ and $δ$ remains confined near $π/4$ and $\pm π/2$ respectively. The current allowed region for $θ_{23}$ and $δ$ in case of inverted hierarchy lies outside the area preferred by the total $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry. However, interesting predictions on the neutrino mixing angles and Dirac CP violating phases are obtained considering partial $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry. We obtain predictive correlations between the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and Dirac CP phase $δ$ and study the testability of these correlations at the future long baseline experiment DUNE. We find that while the imposition of $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry in the first column admit both normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchy, demanding $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry for the second column excludes the inverted hierarchy. Interestingly, the sterile mixing angle $θ_{34}$ gets tightly constrained considering the $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry in the fourth column. We also study consequences of $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry for the Majorana phases and neutrinoless double beta decay.

Considering the general structure of the two point functions of quarks and gluons, we compute the free energy and pressure of a strongly magnetized hot and dense QCD matter created in heavy-ion collisions. In presence of strong magnetic field we found that the deconfined QCD matter exhibits a paramagnetic nature. One gets different pressure in a direction parallel and perpendicular to magnetic field due to the magnetization acquired by the system. We obtain both longitudinal and transverse pressure, and magnetization of a hot deconfined QCD matter in presence of magnetic field. We have used hard thermal loop approximation (HTL) for heat bath. We obtained completely analytic expression for pressure and magnetization under certain approximation. Various divergences appearing in free energy are regulated using appropriate counter terms. The obtained anisotropic pressure may be useful for magnetohydrodynamics description of a hot and dense deconfined QCD matter produced in heavy-ion collisions.

The additional fields and their transformations under the flavour symmetries are chosen in such a way that naturally predicts the hierarchies of different elements of the seesaw mass matrix and also keeps the unwanted terms away. For generic choices of flavon alignments, the model predicts normal hierarchical light neutrino masses with the atmospheric mixing angle in the lower octant. Apart from predicting interesting correlations between different neutrino parameters as well as between neutrino and model parameters, the model also predicts the leptonic Dirac CP phase to lie in a specific range $-π/2\lesssim δ\lesssim -π/5$ and $π/5\lesssim δ\lesssim π/2$ that includes the currently preferred maximal value. The predictions for the absolute neutrino masses in one specific version of the model can also saturate the cosmological upper bound on sum of absolute neutrino masses.

In an attempt to unfold (if any) a possible connection between two apparently uncorrelated sectors, namely neutrino and dark matter, we consider the type-I seesaw and a fermion singlet dark matter to start with. Our construction suggests that there exists a scalar field mediator between these two sectors whose vacuum expectation value not only generates the mass of the dark matter, but also takes part in the neutrino mass generation. While the choice of $Z_4$ symmetry allows us to establish the framework, the vacuum expectation value of the mediator field breaks $Z_4$ to a remnant $Z_2$, that is responsible to keep dark matter stable. Therefore, the observed light neutrino masses and relic abundance constraint on the dark matter, allows us to predict the heavy seesaw scale as illustrated in this paper. The methodology to connect dark matter and neutrino sector, as introduced here, is a generic one and can be applied to other possible neutrino mass generation mechanism and different dark matter candidate(s).

Motivated by the fact that the origin of tiny Dirac neutrino masses via the standard model Higgs field and non-thermal dark matter populating the Universe via freeze-in mechanism require tiny dimensionless couplings of similar order of magnitudes $(\sim 10^{-12})$, we propose a framework that can dynamically generate such couplings in a unified manner. Adopting a flavour symmetric approach based on $A_4$ group, we construct a model where Dirac neutrino coupling to the standard model Higgs and dark matter coupling to its mother particle occur at dimension six level involving the same flavon fields, thereby generating the effective Yukawa coupling of same order of magnitudes. The mother particle for dark matter, a complex scalar singlet, gets thermally produced in the early Universe through Higgs portal couplings followed by its thermal freeze-out and then decay into the dark matter candidates giving rise to the freeze-in dark matter scenario. Some parts of the Higgs portal couplings of the mother particle can also be excluded by collider constraints on invisible decay rate of the standard model like Higgs boson. We show that the correct neutrino oscillation data can be successfully produced in the model which predicts normal hierarchical neutrino mass. The model also predicts the atmospheric angle to be in the lower octant if the Dirac CP phase lies close to the presently preferred maximal value.

Based on transversality condition of gauge boson self-energy we have systematically constructed the general structure of the gauge boson two-point functions using four linearly independent basis tensors in presence of a nontrivial background, i.e., hot magnetized material medium. The hard thermal loop approximation has been used for the heat bath to compute various form factors associated with the gauge boson's two point functions both in strong and weak field approximation. We have also analyzed the dispersion of a gauge boson (e.g., gluon) using the effective propagator both in strong and weak magnetic field approximation. The formalism is also applicable to QED. The presence of only thermal background leads to a longitudinal (plasmon) mode and a two-fold degenerate transverse mode. In presence of a hot magnetized background medium the degeneracy of the two transverse modes is lifted and one gets three quasiparticle modes. In weak field approximation one gets two transverse modes and one plasmon mode. On the other hand, in strong field approximation also one gets the three modes in Lowest Landau Level. The general structure of two-point function may be useful for computing the thermo-magnetic correction of various quantities associated with a gauge boson.

We consider our recently obtained general structure of two point (self-energy and propagator) functions of quarks and gluons in a nontrivial background like a heat bath and an external magnetic field. Based on this, here we have computed free energy and pressure of quarks and gluons for a magnetized hot and dense deconfined QCD matter in weak field approximation. For heat bath we have used hard thermal loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) in presence of finite chemical potential. For weak field approximations we have obtained the pressure of QCD matter, both with and without the high temperature expansion. The results with high $T$ expansions are completely analytic and gauge independent but depends on the renormalization scale in addition to the temperature, chemical potential and the external magnetic field. We also discuss the modification of QCD Debye mass of such matter for an arbitrary magnetic field. Analytic expressions for Debye mass are also obtained for both strong and weak field approximation. It is found to exhibit some interesting features depending upon the three different scales, i.e, the quark mass, temperature and the strength of the magnetic field. The various divergences appearing in the quark and gluon free energies are regulated through appropriate counter terms. In weak field approximation, the low temperature behavior of the pressure is found to strongly depend on the magnetic field than that at high temperature. We also discuss the specific problem with one-loop HTLpt associated with the over-counting of certain orders in coupling.

The flavour symmetry is allowed to be broken at a high scale to a remnant $\mathcal{Z}_2$ symmetry, which not only ensures the stability to the dark matter, but also gives rise to a modification to the existing $A_4$-based tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing. This deviation in turn suggests the required non-zero value of $\sin θ_{13}$. We assume the dark matter to be neutral under the existing $A_4$ symmetry while charged under the $U(1)$ flavor symmetry. Hence in this set-up, the non-zero value of $\sin θ_{13}$ predicts the dark matter charge under $U(1)$, which can be tested at various ongoing and future direct and collider dark matter search experiments. We also point out the involvement of nonzero leptonic CP phase $δ$, which plays an important role in the analysis.

A possible interplay between the two terms of the general type-II seesaw formula is exercised which leads to the generation of nonzero $θ_{13}$. The specific flavor structure of the model, guided by the $A_4 \times Z_4 \times Z_3$ symmetry and accompanied with the Standard Model singlet flavons, yields the conventional seesaw contribution to produce the tribimaximal lepton mixing which is further corrected by the presence of the $SU(2)_L$ triplet contribution to accommodate $θ_{13}$. We consider the CP symmetry to be spontaneously broken by the complex vacuum expectation value (vev) of a singlet field $S$. While the magnitude of its complex vev is responsible for generating $θ_{13}$, its phase part induces the low energy CP violating phase ($δ$) and the CP violation required for leptogenesis. Hence the triplet contribution, although sub-dominant, plays crucial role in providing a common source for non-zero $θ_{13}$, $δ$ and CP-violation required for leptogenesis. We find that the recent hint for $δ$ close to $3π/2$ is somewhat favored in this set-up though it excludes the exact equality with $3π/2$. We also discuss the generation of lepton asymmetry in this scenario.

The inclusion of the new field leads to the deviation from exact tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern in the context of type-I see-saw by producing a nonzero $θ_{13}$ consistent with the recent experimental results at the leading order. A sum rule for light neutrino masses is also obtained in this context. The set-up constraints the two Majorana phases involved in the lepton mixing matrix in terms of $A_4$ parameter space. We have shown that a nonzero lepton asymmetry can be generated while next-to-leading order contributions to the neutrino Yukawa couplings are considered. The two Majorana phases play crucial role in CP-asymmetry parameter and the involvement of $θ_{13}$ in it, is exercised.
