We discuss the role of torsion in string theory on inducing pseudoscalar degrees of freedom (axions), which in turn couple to (gravitational) Chern-Simons (CS) anomalous terms. Such interactions can induce inflation, of running vacuum type, not requiring external inflaton fields, through condensation of the anomalous terms as a consequence of primordial chiral gravitational-wave (GW) tensor perturbations in a weak-quantum gravity setting. The presence of an UV cutoff for the GW quantum graviton modes opens up the system, leading to a dissipative behaviour realised via the presence of non trivial imaginary parts of the gravitational CS terms. The naive estimate of the life time of inflation based on such imaginary parts, which afflict the pertinent GW Hamiltonian, is quite consistent with the estimates of the duration of inflation based on an analysis of the condensate-induced linear-axion-potential by means of dynamical systems. Such quantum-gravity effects can also contribute positively to the alleviation of cosmological tensions if they survive today. In the talk we discuss the conditions under which such a result may be achieved. We also discuss the potential role of other axions in string theory, coming from compactification, in inducing enhanced densities of primordial black holes during RVM inflation, thereby contributing to significantly increased percentages of these black holes that can play the role of dark matter components. Moreover, under certain circumstances, that we shall discuss in some detail, it is also possible that the initially massless torsion-induced axions can acquire a non-trivial mass during the radiation era, thereby providing additional dark matter components in the Universe. With regards to this aspect, we also emphasise the role of massive right-handed neutrinos, provided that such excitations exist in the relevant spectra.

In this work, we elaborate further on a cosmological model of inflation that characterises Chern-Simons (CS) gravity models inspired from string theory. Such models are known to belong to the class of the so-called String-Inspired Running Vacuum Cosmologies. In particular, by applying methods of dynamical systems, commonly used in scalar-field cosmology, we examine in detail, for the first time, the passage from a pre-inflationary era dominated by a stiff-axion-matter equation of state, characteristic of the model, to inflation of Running Vacuum Model (RVM) type. By a careful discussion of the formation of the condensate of the CS gravitational anomaly term, induced by populations of primordial gravitational waves at the end of the stiff-axion-matter era, we show that an effectively linear axion-monodromy potential arises. This eventually causes the transition from the matter to the RVM inflation. By taking into account terms that have previously been ignored in the relevant literature of weak-graviton quantisation, we show that the effect of such terms is to diminish the value of the condensate by half, remaining however in the same order of magnitude. This, in turn, implies that the qualitative conclusions of previous works on the subject remain valid. Moreover, on assuming the approximate cosmic-time independence of the gravitational-CS condensate, we also provide an estimate of the number of sources of the primordial gravitational waves, upon the requirement of respecting the transplanckian conjecture.

Light primordial black holes (PBHs) with masses $M_\mathrm{PBH}<10^9\mathrm{g}$ can interestingly dominate the Universe's energy budget and give rise to early matter-dominated (eMD) eras before Big Bang Nucleosyntesis (BBN). During this eMD era, one is met with an abundant production of induced gravitational waves (GWs) serving as a portal to constrain the underlying theory of gravity. In this work, we study this type of induced GWs within the context of string-inspired running-vaccuum models (StRVMs), which, when expanded around de Sitter backgrounds, include logarithmic corrections of the space-time curvature. In particular, we discuss in detail the effects of StRVMs on the source as well as on the propagation of these PBH-induced GWs. Remarkably, under the assumption that the logarithmic terms represent quantum gravity corrections in the PBH era, we show that GW overproduction can be avoided if one assumes a coefficient of these logarithmic corrections that is much larger than the square of the reduced Planck mass. The latter cannot characterise quantum gravity corrections, though, prompting the need for revision of the quantisation of StRVMs in different than de Sitter backgrounds, such as those characterising PBH-driven eMD eras. This non trivial result suggests the importance of light PBHs as probes of new physics.

This paper considers the possibility that, starting from a relativistic Hermitian quantum field theory in the ultraviolet (UV) regime, and applying a non-perturbative renormalization-group (RG) flow, we arrive at a situation where there are infrared (IR) singularities in the RG flow of couplings. The latter can be resolved by assuming that the theory can have a phase described by a related non-Hermitian PT-symmetric modification in the IR. The UV-to-IR (Hermitian-to-PT-symmetric) transition can occur in a single renormalization-group flow of the pertinent couplings, as demonstrated in concrete examples. When embedded in a gravitational setting such a transition can lead to a repulsive gravity phase. If there is a RG flow to a repulsive PT -symmetric gravity, then this would be an alternative to dark energy. The discussion here is presented in the context of a string-inspired Chern-Simons gravitational effective action, which involves a pseudoscalar (axion-like) field coupled to Abelian gauge fields and gravity; it may also hold more generally in gravity with torsion. The validity of such a scenario in realistic theories might alleviate the need for de Sitter phases in the current epoch of cosmological evolution, thus avoiding their associated conceptual and technical complications.

We consider higher-order derivative gauge field corrections that arise in the fundamental context of dimensional reduction of String Theory and Lovelock-inspired gravities and obtain an exact and asymptotically flat black-hole solution, in the presence of non-trivial dilaton configurations. Specifically, by considering the gravitational theory of Euler-Heisenberg non-linear electrodynamics coupled to a dilaton field with specific coupling functions, we perform an extensive analysis of the characteristics of the black hole, including its geodesics for massive particles, the energy conditions, thermodynamical and stability analysis. The inclusion of a dilaton scalar potential in the action can also give rise to asymptotically (A)dS spacetimes and an effective cosmological constant. Moreover, we find that the black hole can be thermodynamically favored when compared to the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) black hole for those parameters of the model that lead to a larger black-hole horizon for the same mass. Finally, it is observed that the energy conditions of the obtained black hole are indeed satisfied, further validating the robustness of the solution within the theoretical framework, but also implying that this self-gravitating dilaton-non-linear-electrodynamics system constitutes another explicit example of bypassing modern versions of the no-hair theorem without any violation of the energy conditions.

The unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity has long been elusive. Only recently have empirical predictions of various possible theories of quantum gravity been put to test. The dawn of multi-messenger high-energy astrophysics has been tremendously beneficial, as it allows us to study particles with much higher energies and travelling much longer distances than possible in terrestrial experiments, but more progress is needed on several fronts.
A thorough appraisal of current strategies and experimental frameworks, regarding quantum gravity phenomenology, is provided here. Our aim is twofold: a description of tentative multimessenger explorations, plus a focus on future detection experiments.
As the outlook of the network of researchers that formed through the COST Action CA18108 "Quantum gravity phenomenology in the multi-messenger approach (QG-MM)", in this work we give an overview of the desiderata that future theoretical frameworks, observational facilities, and data-sharing policies should satisfy in order to advance the cause of quantum gravity phenomenology.

In the context of a string-inspired running vacuum model (RVM) of cosmology with anomalies and torsion-induced axion-like fields, we discuss quantum corrections to the corresponding energy density, in approximately de Sitter eras, during which the Hubble parameter $H(t)$ varies very slowly with the cosmic time $t$. Such corrections arise either from graviton loops in the corresponding gravitational theory, or from path integration of massive quantum matter fields. They depend logarithmically on $H(t)$, in the form $H^n\, {\rm ln}(H^2)$, $n \in 2Z^+$. In the modern eras, for which the $n=2$ terns are dominant, such corrections may contribute to an alleviation of the currently observed cosmological $H_0$ and structure-growth tensions. In particular, we argue that such an effect is accomplished for a (dynamically-broken) supergravity-based RVM cosmological model. In the current de-Sitter era, for this case, rather surprisingly, the quantum graviton corrections dominate those due to matter fields, provided the scale of the primordial (pre-RVM inflation) dynamical breaking of local supersymmetry lies near the reduced Planck scale, which is a natural assumption in the context of the model.

In this work we establish in a rigorous manner, and a model independent way, the conditions for bypassing Bekenstein's no-scalar-hair theorem for static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat black holes, while maintaining the validity of the energy conditions. Specifically, we argue that a hidden assumption in the theorem, namely the vanishing of the quantity $\mathcal{G} = \mathcal{E} + T^θ\!_θ$, where $\mathcal{E}$ is the energy density and $T^θ\!_θ$ the corresponding component of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field theory, can be relaxed. Indeed, if $\mathcal{G}$ is positive, as a consequence of the assumption on the validity of the energy conditions, then scalar hair is potentially allowed in the black hole's exterior, consistently with the gravitational equations and the generic properties of the (non-trivial) energy momentum tensor. As an explicit example, in which such a behaviour is realised, we discuss the well known model of a (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole coupled to a spontaneously broken Yang-Mills $SU (2)$ gauge theory interacting with a Higgs scalar. We present a rather novel approach to obtain analytical black hole solutions for this system (in contrast to the numerical ones in the existing literature) by applying an appropriate perturbative treatment whereby the black hole configuration is derived as a result of backreaction of Higgs and gauge fields onto an initially fixed flat spacetime. The massive nature of the scalar and gauge fields in this example requires a special treatment, because of their asymptotic form, which we discuss in some detail.

We discuss the potential alleviation of both the Hubble and the growth of galactic structure data tensions observed in the current epoch of Cosmology in the context of the so-called Stringy Running Vacuum Model (RVM) of Cosmology. This is a gravitational field theory coupled to matter, which, at early eras, contains gravitational (Chern-Simons (CS) type) anomalies and torsion, arising from the fundamental degrees of freedom of the massless gravitational multiplet of an underlying microscopic string theory. The model leads to RVM type inflation without external inflatons, arising from the quartic powers of the Hubble parameter that characterise the vacuum energy density due to primordial-gravitational-wave-induced anomaly CS condensates, and dominate the inflationary era. In modern eras, of relevance to this work, the gravitational anomalies are cancelled by chiral matter, generated at the end of the RVM inflationary era, but cosmic radiation and other matter fields are still responsible for a RVM energy density with terms exhibiting a quadratic-power-of-Hubble-parameter dependence, but also products of the latter with logarithmic $H$-dependencies, arising from potential quantum-gravity and quantum-matter loop effects. In this work, such terms are examined phenomenologically from the point of view of the potential alleviation of the aforementioned current tensions in Cosmology. Using standard information criteria, we find that these tensions can be substantially alleviated in a way consistent not only with the data, but also with the underlying microscopic theory predictions, associated with the primordial dynamical breaking of supergravity that characterise a pre-RVM-inflationary phase of the model.

We discuss exact regular compact object solutions in higher dimensional extensions of General Relativity sourced by a phantom scalar field in arbitrary $D$ spacetime dimensions ($D>2$), for which a central singularity is absent. We follow a bottom-up approach, by means of which, by imposing the desired form of the solution to the metric function, we derive the form of the self-interaction scalar potential, which in general appears to depend on both the scalar-hair charge and the black-hole mass. We discuss in this context the validity of the first law of thermodynamics in such systems. Consistency requires the independence of the potential of the mass, imposing in this way the dependence of the mass on the scalar charge of a type that varies with the value of $D$, and according to the no-hair theorem dressing the regular black hole solution with secondary hair. In $D=3,4$ we demonstrate that the potential depends on the ratio of the scalar charge over the mass, and thus considered as a parameter of the theory. This feature, however, does not characterise higher-dimensional cases. Calculating the $D-$dimensional Kretschmann scalar we show that it is finite at the centre point $r=0$ for arbitrary $D$, rendering the solutions regular. The phantom matter content of the theory is also regular at $r=0$, hence the radial coordinate of our manifold is defined for $r \ge 0$. We explicitly discuss the cases of $D=3,4,5,6,10$, and demonstrate that we can have regular, asymptotically flat, black holes with secondary scalar hair.

We derive, in a model independent way, the conditions for the hairy black hole with the secondary hair to reach a stable thermal equilibrium with the heat bath. Specifically, if the scalar hair, induced by interactions of the matter fields with quadratic-curvature corrections, produces an inner horizon in the deformed geometry, a thermodynamically stable configuration will be reached with the black hole becoming extremal in its final stage. We also attempt to make some conjectures concerning the implications of this thermal stability for the existence of a minimum length in a quantum space time.

I review a (3+1)-dimensional, string-inspired cosmological model with gravitational anomalies (of Chern-Simons (CS) type) at early epochs, and a totally-antisymmetric torsion, dual to a massless axion-like field ("gravitational axion"), which couples to the CS term. Under appropriate conditions, primordial gravitational waves can condense, leading to a condensate of the CS anomaly term. As a consequence, one obtains inflation in this theory, of running-vacuum-model (RVM) type, without the need for external inflatons. At the end of the inflationary era, chiral fermionic matter is generated, whose gravitational anomalies cancel the primordial ones. On the other hand, chiral anomalies of gauge type, which are also generated by the chiral matter, remain present during the post-inflationary epochs and become responsible for the generation of a non-perturbative mass for the torsion-related gravitational axion, which, in this way, might play the role of a Dark Matter component of geometrical origin. Moreover, in this model, stringy non-perturbative effects during the RVM inflationary phase generate periodic structures for the potential of axion-like particles that arise due to compactification, and co-exist with the gravitational axions. Such periodic potential modulations may lead to an enhanced production of primordial black holes during inflation, which in turn affects the profile of the generated gravitational waves during the radiation era, with potentially observable consequences. This model also entails an unconventional mechanism for Leptogenesis, due to Lorentz-violating backgrounds of the gravitational axions that are generated during inflation, as a consequence of the anomaly condensates, and remain undiluted in the radiation era.

We discuss self-gravitating global O(3) monopole solutions associated with the spontaneous breaking of O(3) down to a global O(2) in an extended Gauss Bonnet theory of gravity in (3+1)-dimensions, in the presence of a non-trivial scalar field $Φ$ that couples to the Gauss-Bonnet higher curvature combination with a coupling parameter $α$. We obtain a range of values for $α< 0$ (in our notation and conventions), which are such that a global (Israel type) matching is possible of the space time exterior to the monopole core $δ$ with a de-Sitter interior, guaranteeing the positivity of the ADM mass of the monopole, which, together with a positive core radius $δ> 0$, are both dynamically determined as a result of this matching. It should be stressed that in the General Relativity (GR) limit, where $α\to 0$, and $Φ\to $ constant, such a matching yields a negative ADM monopole mass, which might be related to the stability issues the (Barriola-Vilenkin (BV)) global monopole of GR faces. Thus, our global monopole solution, which shares many features with the BV monopole, such as an asymptotic-space-time deficit angle, of potential phenomenological/cosmological interest, but has, par contrast, a positive ADM mass, has a chance of being a stable configuration, although a detailed stability analysis is pending.

We consider a pseudoscalar axion-like field coupled to a Chern-Simons gravitational anomaly term. The axion field backreacts on a rotating Kerr black hole background, resulting in modifications in the spacetime. In an attempt to determine potentially observable signatures, we study the angular momentum of the system of the modified Kerr-like black hole and the axionic matter outside the horizon of the black hole. As the strength of the coupling of the axion field to the Chern-Simons term is increasing, the requirement that the total angular momentum of the system remain constant forces the black hole angular momentum to decrease. There exists a critical value of this coupling beyond which the black hole starts to rotate in the opposite direction, with an increasing magnitude of its angular momentum. We interpret this effect as a consequence of the exchange of energy between the axionic matter and the gravitational anomaly, which is sourced by the rotating black hole.

We study aspects of inflation and the possibility of enhanced production of primordial black holes (PBHs) and gravitational waves (GWs) in a string-inspired model of two axion fields coupled to Chern-Simons gravity, which results in a running-vacuum-model inflation. Fluctuations of the scale invariant spectrum, consistent with the cosmological data, are provided in this model by world-sheet (non-perturbative) instanton terms of the axion field arising from string compactification. As a result of such modulations, there is an enhanced production of PBHs and GWs in such cosmologies, which may lead to observable in principle patterns in the profile of GWs during the radiation era. Moreover, we demonstrate that the PBHs may provide a significant amount of Dark Matter in this Universe. For comparison, we also discuss a two-stage inflation cosmological model of conventional string-inspired axion monodromy, involving again two axion fields. The resulting modifications imprinted on the GWs spectra between these two classes of models are distinct, and can, in principle, be distinguished by future interferometers. We consider models with more or less instantaneous reheating. We also make some remarks on the effects of a prolonged reheating period in leading to further enhancement of the power spectrum and thus fractions of PBHs that play the role of Dark matter.

We discuss situations under which Lorentz symmetry is violated in effective gravitational field theories that arise in the low-energy limit of strings. In particular, we discuss spontaneous violation of the symmetry by the ground state of the system. In the flat space-time limit, the effective theory of the broken Lorentz Symmetry acquires a form that belongs to the general framework of the so-called Standard Model Extension (SME) formalism. A brief review of this formalism is given before we proceed to describe a concrete example, where we discuss a Lorentz-symmetry-Violating (LV) string-inspired cosmological model. The model is a gravitational field theory coupled to matter, which contains torsion, arising from the fundamental degrees of freedom of the underlying string theory. The latter, under certain conditions which we shall specify, can acquire a LV condensate, and lead, via the appropriate equations of motion, to solutions that violate Lorentz and CPT (Charge-Parity-Time-Reversal) symmetry. The model is described by a specific form of an SME effective theory, with specific LV and CPT symmetry Violating coefficients, which depend on the microscopic parameters of the underlying string theory, and thus can be bounded by current-era phenomenology.

Chern-Simons gravity rotating Kerr-type black hole solutions are revisited from the point of view of their scalarization, namely examining the back reaction of pseudoscalar axion fields on the rotating geometry. To lowest order in an angular momentum expansion, and a long range approximation for both the axion field configuration and its back reaction onto the metric, such solutions had been discussed for the first time in the context of string theory. In this work, we extend the analysis to give analytic expressions for slowly rotating black holes outside the horizon, which formally include an all order expansion in inverse powers of the radial distance from the centre of the black hole, which allows to approach arbitrarily close the horizon. We also discuss in some detail the way Chern-Simons gravity violates the energy conditions, which leads to secondary axionic hair of the rotating black hole solutions. This discussion is extended to studies of wormhole solutions, which we construct in this article via the thin-shell procedure and we demonstrate that the presence of the axion field enforces the two black hole solutions to be counter-rotating and for slow rotation, there is no backreaction of the Cotton tensor on the thin-shell of the wormhole.

We perform a detailed investigation of the BBN epoch and we calculate the deviations of the freeze-out temperature $T_f$ in comparison to $Λ$CDM paradigm. We then use the observational bound on $ \left|\frac{δ{T}_f}{{T}_f}\right|$ in order to extract constraints on the involved parameters of various models. We find that all models can satisfy the BBN constraints and thus they constitute viable cosmological scenarios, since they can additionally account for the dark energy sector and the late-time acceleration, in a quantitative manner, without spoiling the formation of light elements during the BBN epoch. Nevertheless, the obtained constraints on the relevant model parameters are quite strong.

I review a string-inspired cosmological model, with gravitational anomalies present at very early epochs, which includes a totally antisymmetric torsion, that in (3+1)-dimensions is equivalent to a pseudoscalar (Kalb-Ramond, string-model independent) axion field. Upon condensation of primordial gravitational waves (GW), that are created at a pre-inflationary era, the model leads to inflation of the so-called running-vacuum-model (RVM) type, which is realised without the need for external inflaton fields, being due to the non-linearities that characterise the gravitational theory. The model provides an alternative to the $Λ$CDM paradigm, and is also capable of inducing matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe, during the post-inflationary radiation era, in models with right-handed neutrinos in their matter spectra. The so-induced asymmetry is triggered by a Lorentz-symmetry-violating KR axion background that is generated during the RVM-inflationary period, as a consequence of the GW condensate. The modern era of this cosmology is argued to be characterised by observable (RVM-type) deviations from $Λ$CDM, with the potential of alleviating the observed tensions in the cosmological data.

I review several aspects of torsion in string-inspired cosmologies. In particular, I discuss its connection with fundamental, string-model independent, axion fields associated with the massless gravitational multiplet of the string. I argue in favour of the role of primordial gravitational anomalies coupled to such axions in inducing inflation of a type encountered in the "running-vacuum-model (RVM)" cosmological framework, without fundamental inflaton fields. The gravitational-anomaly terms owe their existence to the Green-Schwarz mechanism for the (extra-dimensional) anomaly cancellation, and may be non-trivial in such theories in the presence of (primordial) gravitational waves at early stages of the four-dimensional string Universe (after compactification). I also discuss how the torsion-induced stringy axions can acquire a mass in the post inflationary era, due to non perturbative effects, thus having the potential to play the rôle of (a component of) dark matter in such models. Finally, I describe briefly the current-era phenomenology of this model, with the emphasis placed on the possibility of alleviating tensions observed in the current-era cosmological data. A brief phenomenological comparison with other cosmological models in contorted geometries is also made.

I review a string-inspired cosmological model with gravitational anomalies in its early epochs, which is based on fields from the (bosonic) massless gravitational multiplet of strings, in particular gravitons and Kalb Ramond (KR), string-model independent, axions (the dilaton is assumed constant). I show how condensation of primordial gravitational waves, which are generared at the very early eras immediately after the big bang, can lead to inflation of the so called running vacuum model (RVM) type, without external inflatons. The role of the slow-roll field is played by the KR axion, but it does not drive inflation. The non-linearities in the anomaly terms do. Chiral fermionic matter excitations appear at the end of this RVM inflation, as a result of the decay of the RVM vacuum, and are held responsible for the cancellation of the primordial gravitational anomalies. Chiral anomalies, however, survive in the post-inflationary epochs, and can lead to the generation of a non perturbative mass for the KR axion, which could thus play the role of dark matter in this Universe. As a result of the condensed gravitational anomaly, there is a Lorentz-invariance violating KR axion background, which remains undiluted during the RVM inflation, and can lead to baryogenesis through leptogenesis in the radiation era, in models with sterile right-handed neutrinos. I also discuss the phenomenology of the model in the modern era, paying particular attention to linking it with a version of RVM, called type II RVM, which arguably can alleviate observed tensions in the current-epoch cosmological data.

In a modest attempt to present potentially new paradigms in Cosmology, including its inflationary epoch, and initiate discussions, I review in this article some novel, string-inspired cosmological models, which entail a purely geometrical origin of the Dark sector of the Universe but also of its observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. The models contain gravitational (string-model independent, Kalb-Ramond (KR)) axion fields coupled to primordial gravitational anomalies via CP-violating interactions. The anomaly terms are four-space-time-dimensional remnants of the Green-Schwarz counterterms appearing in the definition of the field strength of the spin-one antisymmetric tensor field of the (bosonic) massless gravitational string multiplet, which also plays the rôle of a totally antisymmetric component of torsion. I show how in such cosmologies the presence of primordial gravitational waves can lead to anomaly condensates and dynamical inflation of a "running-vacuum-model" type, without external inflatons, but also to leptogenesis in the radiation era due to anomaly-induced Lorentz and CPT Violating KR axion backgrounds. In previous works we have embedded the Running Vacuum Model (RVM) of Cosmology in the framework of string theory. Specifically, we considered a string-inspired Cosmology with primordial gravitational waves (GW) and gravitational anomalies, which were argued to lead, via appropriate condensation during the very-early-universe era, to dynamical inflation, of RVM type, without the need for extra inflaton fields. A crucial role for the associated slow-roll nature of the inflationary era was played by the fundamental axion field that exists in the gravitational multiplet of strings, viz. the Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion. In this paper, we study further this model and demonstrate several novel facts, completing our previous studies. We clarify the different roles played by the background KR axions, which constitute a form of stiff matter that dominates a pre-RVM-inflationary epoch of the Universe. We show that the KR axion when combined with the gravitational Chern-Simons contribution obey together a peculiar equation of state $p=-ρ$, with negative energy density $ρ< 0$, which we call `phantom vacuum'. Eventually, this state transmutes into the standard vacuum state thanks to the contribution from the gravitational Chern-Simons condensate, which makes the total $ρ_{\rm total} =-p_{\rm total} >0$. At this point the RVM vacuum picture emerges naturally, with an overall equation of state of true vacuum type. We find that our scenario is consistent with the trans-Planckian censorship hypothesis, given that the rate of change of the KR axion takes only sub-Planckian values. We also discuss some explicit scenarios on the creation of GWs within the context of supergravity models that could be embedded in our string theory framework. {Finally, we argue how the RVM in our context can help to alleviate the current tensions of the $Λ$CDM.}

In previous works we have derived a Running Vacuum Model (RVM) for a string Universe, which provides an effective description of the evolution of 4-dimensional string-inspired cosmologies from inflation till the present epoch. In the context of this "stringy RVM" version, it is assumed that the early Universe is characterised by purely gravitational degrees of freedom, from the massless gravitational string multiplet, including the antisymmetric tensor field. The latter plays an important role, since its dual gives rise to a `stiff' gravitational-axion "matter", which in turn couples to the gravitational anomaly terms, assumed to be non-trivial at early epochs. In the presence of primordial gravitational wave (GW) perturbations, such anomalous couplings lead to an RVM-like dynamical inflation, without external inflatons. We review here this framework and discuss potential scenarios for the generation of such primordial GW, among which the formation of unstable domain walls, which eventually collapse in a non-spherical-symmetric manner, giving rise to GW. We also remark that the same type of "stiff" axionic matter could provide, upon the generation of appropriate potentials during the post-inflationary eras, (part of) the Dark Matter (DM) in the Universe, which could well be ultralight, depending on the parameters of the string-inspired model. All in all, the new (stringy) mechanism for RVM-inflation preserves the basic structure of the original (and more phenomenological) RVM, as well as its main advantages: namely, a mechanism for graceful exit and for generating a huge amount of entropy capable of explaining the horizon problem. It also predicts axionic DM and the existence of mild dynamical Dark Energy (DE) of quintessence type in the present universe, both being "living fossils" of the inflationary stages of the cosmic evolution.

We elaborate further on the compatibility of the "vacuumon potential" that characterises the inflationary phase of the Running Vacuum Model (RVM) with the Swampland criteria. The work is motivated by the fact that, as demonstrated recently by the authors [1-3], the RVM framework can be derived as an effective gravitational field theory stemming from underlying microscopic (critical) string theory models with gravitational anomalies, involving condensation of primordial gravitational waves. Although believed to be a classical scalar field description, not representing a fully fledged quantum field, nonetheless we show here that the vacuumon potential satisfies certain Swampland criteria for the relevant regime of parameters and field range. We link the criteria to the Gibbons-Hawking entropy that has been argued to characterise the RVM during the de Sitter phase. These results imply that the vacuumon may, after all, admit under certain conditions, a rôle as a quantum field during the inflationary (almost de Sitter) phase of the running vacuum. The conventional slow-roll interpretation of this field, however, fails just because it satisfies the Swampland criteria. The RVM effective theory derived from the low-energy effective action of string theory does, however, successfully describe inflation thanks to the $\sim H^4$ terms induced by the gravitational anomalous condensates. In addition, the stringy version of the RVM involves the Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion field, which, in contrast to the vacuumon, does perfectly satisfy the slow-roll condition. We conclude that the vacuumon description is not fully equivalent to the stringy formulation of the RVM.

For the range of parameters relevant for leptogenesis, our analysis fully justifies the use of plane-wave solutions in our study of leptogenesis with Boltzmann equations; any corrections induced by space-time-curvature are negligible. We also elaborate further on how the lepton asymmetry is communicated to the Baryon sector. We demonstrate that the KR background (KRB) does not contribute to the anomaly equations that determine the baryon asymmetry a) through an explicit evaluation of a triangle Feynman graph and b) indirectly, on topological grounds, by identifying the KRB as torsion (in the effective string-inspired low energy gravitational field theory).

In this talk, I review briefly a scenario for the evolution of a string-inspired cosmological model, in which condensates of primordial gravitational waves (GW), formed at the very early eras after the Big Bang, are considered responsible for inducing inflation and then a smooth exit to a radiation dominated epoch. Primordial axion fields, that exist in the fundamental massless gravitational (bosonic) string multiplet, couple to the non-trivial GW-induced anomalies. As a result of this coupling, there exist axion background configurations which violate (spontaneously) Lorentz symmetry, and remain undiluted at the end of inflation. In models with heavy sterile right-handed neutrinos (RHN), such backgrounds are linked to novel (Lorentz and CPT Violating) mechanisms for the generation of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Cosmos, via the asymmetric decays of the RHN to standard model particles and antiparticles. During the QCD epoch, the axions develop an instanton-induced mass and can, thus, play the rôle of Dark Matter (DM). The energy density of such a Universe, throughout its evolution, has the form of that of a "running vacuum model", that is, it can be expanded in power series of even powers of the Hubble parameter $H(t)$. The coefficients of those terms, though, are different for the various cosmological epochs. For the phenomenology of our model, which is consistent with the current cosmological data, and could also help in alleviating (some of) the tensions, it suffices to consider up to and including quartic powers of $H(t)$. In the early Universe phase, it is the $H^4(t)$ term, induced by the GW condensate of the gravitational anomaly, that drives inflation without the need for external inflaton fields.

We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

In this letter, we elaborate further on a Cosmological "Running-Vacuum" type model for the Universe, suggested previously by the authors within the context of a string-inspired effective theory in the presence of a Kalb-Ramond (KR) gravitational axion field which descends from the antisymmetric tensor of the massless gravitational string multiplet. In the presence of this field, which has anomalous CP violating interactions with the gravitons, primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which in turn are responsible for the appearance of $H^2$ and $H^4$ contributions to the vacuum energy density, these terms being characteristic of generic "running-vacuum-model (RVM) type", where $H$ is the Hubble parameter. In this work we prove in detail the appearance of the $H^4$ terms due to gravitational-anomaly-induced condensates in the energy density of the primordial Universe, which can self-consistently induce inflation, and subsequent exit from it, according to the generic features of RVM. We also argue in favour of the robustness of our results, which were derived within an effective low-energy field theory approach, against Ultra Violet completion of the theory. During the radiation and matter-dominated eras, gravitational anomalies cancel, as required for the consistency of the quantum matter/radiation field theory. However, chiral and QCD-axion-type anomalies survive and have important consequences for both cosmic magnetogenesis and axionic dark matter in the Universe. Finally, the stringy RVM scenario presented here predicts quintessence-like dynamical dark energy for the current Universe, which is compatible with the existing fitting analyses of such model against observations

We present a model for the Universe in which quantum anomalies are argued to play an important dual role: they are responsible for generating matter-antimatter asymmetry, but also provide time-dependent contributions to the vacuum energy density of "running-vacuum" type, which drive the Universe evolution. During the inflationary phase of a string-inspired Universe, and its subsequent exit, the existence of primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which couple to the Kalb-Ramond (KR)axion field of the massless gravitational string multiplet. Such anomalous CP violating interactions have two important effects: first, they lead to contributions to the vacuum energy density of the form appearing in the "running vacuum model" (RVM) framework, proportional to both the square and the fourth power of the effective Hubble parameter $H$, the $H^4$ terms being associated with anomaly-induced inflation within the RVM framework. Second, there is an undiluted KR axion at the end of inflation, which plays an important role in generating matter-antimatter asymmetry through baryogenesis via leptogenesis in models with heavy right handed neutrinos. As the Universe exits inflation and enters a radiation dominated era, the generation of chiral fermionic matter is responsible for the cancellation of gravitational anomalies, thus restoring diffeomorphism invariance for the matter/radiation (quantum) theory, as required for consistency. Chiral U(1) anomalies may remain uncompensated, though, during matter/radiation dominance, providing RVM-like $H^2$ and $H^4$ contributions to the Universe energy density. Finally, in the current era, gravitational anomalies resurface, leading to much weaker RVM-like $H_0^2$ contributions to the vacuum energy density. Our model favours axionic Dark Matter, the source of which can be the KR axion.

We discuss a connection between gravitational-wave physics, quantum theory anomalies, right-handed (sterile) neutrinos, (spontaneous) CPT Violation and Leptogenesis, within the framework of string-inspired cosmological models. In particular, we present a scenario, according to which (primordial) gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies during inflation. This, in turn, results in the existence of an undiluted (at the exit of inflation/beginning of radiation era) bakcground of the Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion of the massless bosonic string gravitational multiplet. The latter may violate spontaneously CP and CPT symmetries, and induce leptogenesis during the radiation-dominated era in models involving right-handed neutrinos. The so-generated lepton asymmetry may then be communicated to the baryon sector by appropriate baryon-minus-lepton-number (B - L)-conserving, but (B + L)-violating, (sphaleron) processes in the Standard Model sector, thus leading to matter dominance over antimatter in the Universe. In the current (approximately de Sitter) era, the KR axion background may provide a source for an axionic dark matter in the Universe, through its mixing with other axions that are abundant in string models. As an interesting byproduct of our analysis, we demonstrate that the anomalies contribute to the vacuum energy density of the Universe terms of 'running-vacuum' type, proportional to the square of the Hubble parameter, $H^2$.

This leads to baryogenesis through leptogenesis with massive right-handed neutrinos. The generation of chiral matter after inflation helps in cancelling the anomalies in the observable radiation- and matter- dominated eras. The present era inherits the same "running vacuum" structure triggered during the inflationary time by the axion field. The current dark energy is thus predicted to be mildly dynamical, and dark matter should be made of axions. Paraphrasing Carl Sagan: "we are all anomalously made from starstuff " .

We investigate the running vacuum model (RVM) in the framework of scalar field theory. This dynamical vacuum model provides an elegant global explanation of the cosmic history, namely the universe starts from a non-singular initial de Sitter vacuum stage, it passes smoothly from an early inflationary era to a radiation epoch ("graceful exit") and finally it enters the dark matter and dark energy (DE) dominated epochs, where it can explain the large entropy problem and predicts a mild dynamical evolution of the DE. Within this phenomenologically appealing context, we formulate an effective {\it classical} scalar field description of the RVM through a field $φ$, called the {\it vacuumon}, which turns out to be very helpful for an understanding and practical implementation of the physical mechanisms of the running vacuum during both the early universe and the late time cosmic acceleration. In the early universe the potential for the vacuumon may be mapped to a potential that behaves similarly to that of the scalaron field of Starobinsky-type inflation at the {\it classical} level, whilst in the late universe it provides an effective scalar field description of DE. The two representations, however, are not physically equivalent since the mechanisms of inflation are entirely different. Moreover, unlike the scalaron, vacuumon is treated as a classical background field, and not a fully fledged quantum field, hence cosmological perturbations will be different between the two pictures of inflation.

We review scenarios of baryogenesis through leptogenesis at early epochs of the universe, in string-inspired minimal extensions of the Standard Model (SM), involving heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos. Spontaneous violation of CPT symmetry is induced by appropriate (in general, temperature-dependent) backgrounds of the Kalb-Ramond (KR) axion field, which has its origins in the (bosonic) massless string multiplet. As interesting features of the model, we also discuss two issues associated with quantum (chiral) anomalies: (i) the non-contribution of the KR axion background to the (anomalous) chiral magnetic effect, which arises in the presence of external electromagnetic fields and non-zero chiral chemical potentials of charged fermions and (ii) the potential rôle of quantum fluctuations of the KR axion on the (anomalous) radiative generation of a Majorana mass for the right-handed neutrinos themselves.

The constant background approximation though is shown to capture the main phenomenological features of leptogenesis. On comparing our analysis to the related chiral magnetic effect for axial current condensates, we conclude that the Kalb-Ramond field does not play the role of the chiral chemical potential needed for that effect.

We have suggested earlier that D-particles, which are stringy space-time defects predicted in brane-inspired models of the Universe, might constitute a component of dark matter, and that they might contribute to the masses of singlet fermions that could provide another component. Interactions of the quantum-fluctuating D-particles with matter induce vector forces that are mediated by a massless effective U(1) gauge field, the "D-photon", which is distinct from the ordinary photon and has different properties from dark photons. We discuss the form of interactions of D-matter with conventional matter induced by D-photon exchange and calculate their strength, which depends on the density of D-particles. Observations of the hydrogen 21~cm line at redshifts >= 15 can constrain these interactions and the density of D-matter in the early Universe.

Allowing for a difference in neutrino and photon propagation times of $\sim 10$ days, we find that $M_1 \gtrsim 3 \times 10^{16}$ GeV. This improves on previous limits on linear Lorentz violation in neutrino propagation by many orders of magnitude, and the same is true for quadratic Lorentz violation.

Models of quantum gravity suggest that the vacuum should be regarded as a medium with quantum structure that may have non-trivial effects on photon propagation, including the violation of Lorentz invariance. Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are sensitive probes of Lorentz invariance, via studies of energy-dependent timing shifts in their rapidly-varying photon emissions. In this paper we analyze the Fermi-LAT measurements of high-energy gamma rays from GRBs with known redshifts, allowing for the possibility of energy-dependent variations in emission times at the sources as well as a possible non-trivial refractive index in vacuo for photons. We use statistical estimators based on the irregularity, kurtosis and skewness of bursts that are relatively bright in the 100 MeV to multi-GeV energy band to constrain possible dispersion effects during propagation. We find that the energy scale characterizing a linear energy dependence of the refractive index should exceed a few $\times 10^{17}$ GeV, and we estimate the sensitivity attainable with additional future sources to be detected by Fermi-LAT.

In a previous work we suggested a self-gravitating electromagnetic monopole solution in a string-inspired model involving global spontaneous breaking of a $SO(3)$ internal symmetry and Kalb-Ramond (KR) axions, stemming from an antisymmetric tensor field in the massless string multiplet. These axions carry a charge, which, in our model, also plays the rôle of the magnetic charge. The resulting geometry is close to that of a Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole with charge proportional to the KR-axion charge. We proposed the existence of a thin shell structure inside a (large) core radius as the dominant mass contribution to the energy functional. The resulting energy was finite, and proportional to the KR-axion charge; however, the size of the shell was not determined and left as a phenomenological parameter. In the current article, we can calculate the mass-shell size, on proposing a regularisation of the black hole singularity via a matching procedure between the RN metric in the outer region and, in the inner region, a de Sitter space with a (positive) cosmological constant proportional to the scale of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of $SO(3)$ . The matching, which involves the Israel junction conditions for the metric and its first derivatives at the inner surface of the shell, determines the inner mass-shell radius. The axion charge plays an important rôle in guaranteeing positivity of the "mass coefficient" of the gravitational potential term appearing in the metric component; so the KR electromagnetic monopole shows normal attractive gravitational effects. This is to be contrasted with the global monopole case (in the absence of KR axions) where such a matching is known to yield a negative "mass coefficient" (and, hence, repulsive gravitational effects). The total energy of the monopole within the shell is calculated.

It is well known that certain special classes of self-gravitating point-like defects, such as global (non gauged) monopoles, give rise to non-asymptotically flat space-times characterized by solid angle deficits, whose size depends on the details of the underlying microscopic models. The scattering of electrically neutral particles on such space-times is described by amplitudes that exhibit resonant behaviour when the scattering and deficit angles coincide. This, in turn, leads to ring-like structures where the cross sections are formally divergent ("singular lensing"). In this work, we revisit this particular phenomenon, with the twofold purpose of placing it in a contemporary and more general context, in view of renewed interest in the theory and general phenomenology of such defects, and, more importantly, of addressing certain subtleties that appear in the particular computation that leads to the aforementioned effect. In particular, by adopting a specific regularization procedure for the formally infinite Legendre series encountered, we manage to ensure the recovery of the Minkowski space-time, and thus the disappearance of the lensing phenomenon, in the no-defect limit, and the validity of the optical theorem for the elastic total cross section. In addition, the singular nature of the phenomenon is confirmed by means of an alternative calculation, which, unlike the original approach, makes no use of the generating function of the Legendre polynomials, but rather exploits the asymptotic properties of the Fresnel integrals.

We discuss leptogenesis in a model with heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos propagating in a constant but otherwise generic CPT-violating axial time-like background (which could be motivated by string theory considerations). At temperatures much higher than the temperature of the electroweak phase transition we solve analytically but approximately (using Pade approximants) the corresponding Boltzmann equations, which describe lepton asymmetry generation due to the tree-level decays of the heavy neutrinos into standard model leptons. These leptons are effectively massless at such temperatures. The current work completes in a rigorous way a preliminary treatment of the same system, by some of the present authors. In this earlier work, lepton asymmetry was crudely estimated considering the decay of a right-handed neutrino at rest. Our present analysis includes thermal momentum modes for the heavy neutrino and this leads to a total lepton asymmetry which is bigger by a factor of two as compared to the previous estimate. Nevertheless, our current and preliminary results for the freezeout are found to be in agreement (within a 12.5% uncertainty). Our analysis depends on a novel use of Pade approximants to solve the Boltzmann equations and may be more widely useful in cosmology.

In this work we consider the direct interactions of D-particle with uncharged singlet fermions such as right-handed neutrinos. Quantum fluctuations of the lattice of D-particles have massless vector (spin-one) excitations that are analogues of phonons. These mediate forces between the singlet fermions, generating large dynamical masses that may be communicated to light neutrinos via the seesaw mechanism.

Motivated by the recent breakthrough of the detection of Gravitational Waves (GW) from coalescent black holes by the aLIGO interferometers, we study the propagation of GW in the {\sl D-material universe}, which we have recently shown to be compatible with large-scale structure and inflationary phenomenology. The medium of D-particles induces an effective mass for the graviton, as a consequence of the formation of recoil-velocity field condensates due to the underlying Born-Infeld dynamics. There is a competing effect, due to a super-luminal refractive index, as a result of the gravitational energy of D-particles acting as a dark matter component, with which propagating gravitons interact. We examine conditions for the condensate under which the latter effect is sub-leading. We argue that if quantum fluctuations of the recoil velocity are relatively strong, which can happen in the current era of the universe, then the condensate, and hence the induced mass of the graviton, can be several orders of magnitude larger than the magnitude of the cosmological constant today. Hence, we constrain the graviton mass using aLIGO and pulsar timing observations (which give the most stringent bounds at present). In such a sub-luminal graviton case, there is also a gravitational Cherenkov effect for ordinary high energy cosmic matter, which is further constrained by means of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray observations. Assuming cosmic rays of extragalactic origin, the bounds on the quantum condensate strength, based on the gravitational Cherenkov effect, are of the same order as those from aLIGO measurements, in contrast to the case where a galactic origin of the cosmic rays is assumed, in which case the corresponding bounds are much weaker.

We have argued previously, based on the analysis of two-dimensional stringy black holes, that information in stringy versions of four-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes (whose singular regions are represented by appropriate Wess-Zumino-Witten models) is retained by quantum $W$-symmetries when the horizon area is not preserved due to Hawking radiation. It is key that the exactly-marginal conformal world-sheet operator representing a massless stringy particle interacting with the black hole requires a contribution from $W_\infty$ generators in its vertex function. The latter correspond to delocalised, non-propagating, string excitations that guarantee the transfer of information between the string black hole and external particles. When infalling matter crosses the horizon, these topological states are excited via a process: (Stringy black hole) + infalling matter $\rightarrow $ (Stringy black hole)$^\star$, where the black hole is viewed as a stringy state with a specific configuration of $W_\infty$ charges that are conserved. Hawking radiation is then the reverse process, with conservation of the $W_\infty$ charges retaining information. The Hawking radiation spectrum near the horizon of a Schwarzschild or Kerr black hole is specified by matrix elements of higher-order currents that form a phase-space $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra. We show that an appropriate gauging of this algebra preserves the horizon two-dimensional area classically, as expected because the latter is a conserved Noether charge.

On the occasion of a century from the proposal of General relativity by Einstein, I attempt to tackle some open issues in modern cosmology, via a toy but non-trivial model. Specifically, I would like to link together: (i) the smallness of the cosmological constant today, (ii) the evolution of the universe from an inflationary era after the big-bang till now, and (iii) local supersymmetry in the gravitational sector (supergravity) with a broken spectrum at early eras, by making use of the concept of the "running vacuum" in the context of a simple toy model of four-dimensional N=1 supergravity. The model is characterised by dynamically broken local supersymmetry, induced by the formation of gravitino condensates in the early universe. As I will argue, there is a Starobinsky-type inflationary era characterising the broken supersymmetry phase in this model, which is compatible with the current cosmological data, provided a given constraint is satisfied among some tree-level parameters of the model and the renormalised cosmological constant of the de Sitter background used in the analysis. Applying the "running vacuum" concept, then, to the effective field theory at the exit of inflation, makes a smooth connection (in cosmic time) with the radiation dominance epoch and subsequently with the current era of the Universe, characterised by a small (but dominant) cosmological-constant contribution to the cosmic energy density. In this approach, the smallness of the cosmological constant today is attributed to the failure (due to quantum gravity non-perturbative effects) of the aforementioned constraint.
