The stellar content of the Hamburg/ESO survey. V. The metallicity distribution function of the Galactic halo

Abstract: We determine the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the Galactic halo by means of a sample of 1638 metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). The sample was corrected for minor biases introduced by the strategy for spectroscopic follow-up observations of the metal-poor candidates, namely "best and brightest stars first". [...] We determined the selection… ▽ More We determine the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the Galactic halo by means of a sample of 1638 metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). The sample was corrected for minor biases introduced by the strategy for spectroscopic follow-up observations of the metal-poor candidates, namely "best and brightest stars first". [...] We determined the selection function of the HES, which must be taken into account for a proper comparison between the HES MDF with MDFs of other stellar populations or those predicted by models of Galactic chemical evolution. The latter show a reasonable agreement with the overall shape of the HES MDF for [Fe/H] > -3.6, but only a model of Salvadori et al. (2007) with a critical metallicity for low-mass star formation of Z_cr = 10^{-3.4} * Z_Sun reproduces the sharp drop at [Fe/H] ~-3.6 present in the HES MDF. [...] A comparison of the MDF of Galactic globular clusters and of dSph satellites to the Galaxy shows qualitative agreement with the halo MDF, derived from the HES, once the selection function of the latter is included. Abstract: We report broadband UBV and/or BVRI CCD photometry for a total of 1857 stars in the thick-disk and halo populations of the Galaxy. The majority of our targets were selected as candidate field horizontal-branch or other A-type stars (FHB/A, N = 576), or candidate low-metallicity stars (N = 1221), from the HK and Hamburg/ESO objective-prism surveys. The majority of our targets were selected as candidate field horizontal-branch or other A-type stars (FHB/A, N = 576), or candidate low-metallicity stars (N = 1221), from the HK and Hamburg/ESO objective-prism surveys. Similar data for a small number of additional stars from other samples are also reported. These data are being used for several purposes. In the case of the FHB/A candidates they are used to accurately separate the lower-gravity FHB stars from various higher-gravity A-type stars, a subsample that includes the so-called Blue Metal Poor stars, halo and thick-disk blue stragglers, main-sequence A-type dwarfs, and Am and Ap stars. These data are also being used to derive photometric distance estimates to high-velocity hydrogen clouds in the Galaxy and for improved measurements of the mass of the Galaxy. Photometric data for the metal-poor candidates are being used to refine estimates of stellar metallicity for objects with available medium-resolution spectroscopy, to obtain distance estimates for kinematic analyses, and to establish initial estimates of effective temperature for analysis of high-resolution spectroscopy of the stars for which this information now exists. △ Less

Carbon Stars in the Hamburg/ESO Survey: Abundances

Abstract: We have carried out a detailed abundance analysis for a sample of 16 carbon stars found among candidate extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. We find that the Fe-metallicities for the cooler C-stars (Teff ~ 5100K) have been underestimated by a factor of ~10 by the standard HES survey tools. The results presented here provided crucial supporting data used by Cohen et al (2… ▽ More We have carried out a detailed abundance analysis for a sample of 16 carbon stars found among candidate extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. We find that the Fe-metallicities for the cooler C-stars (Teff ~ 5100K) have been underestimated by a factor of ~10 by the standard HES survey tools. The results presented here provided crucial supporting data used by Cohen et al (2006) to derive the frequency of C-stars among EMP stars. C-enhancement in these EMP C-stars appears to be independent of Fe-metallicity and approximately constant at ~1/5 the solar C/H. The mostly low C12/C13 ratios (~4) and the high N abundances in many of these stars suggest that material which has been through proton burning via the CN cycle comprises most of the stellar envelope. C-enhancement is associated with strong enrichment of heavy nuclei beyond the Fe-peak for 12 of the 16 stars. The remaining C-stars from the HES, which tend to be the most Fe-metal poor, show no evidence for enhancement of the heavy elements. Very high enhancements of lead are detected in some of the C-stars with highly enhanced Ba. (We show that) the s-process is responsible for the enhancement of the heavy elements for the majority of the C-stars in our sample. We suggest that both the s-process rich and Ba-normal C-stars result from phenomena associated with mass transfer in binary systems. The Frequency of Carbon Stars Among Extremely Metal-Poor Stars

The consequences of these scale errors are that a) the fraction of carbon stars at extremely low metallicities has been overestimated in several papers in the recent literature b) the number of extremely metal poor stars known is somewhat lower than has been quoted in the recent literature c) the yield for extremely metal poor stars by the HES Survey is somewhat lower than is stated in the recent literature. A preliminary estimate for the frequency of Carbon stars among the giants in the HES sample with -4 < [Fe/H] < -2.0 dex is 7.4 +-2.9%; adding an estimate for the C-enhanced giants with [C/Fe] > 1.0 dex without detectable C2 bands raises the fraction to 14 +-4$%. We rely on the results of an extensive set of homogeneous detailed abundance analyses of stars expected to have [Fe/H] < -3.0 dex selected from the HES to establish these claims. We have found that the Fe-metallicity of the cooler (Teff < 5200K) C-stars as derived from spectra taken with HIRES at Keck are a factor of ~10 higher than those obtained via the algorithm used by the HES project to analyze the moderate resolution follow-up spectra, which is identical to that used until very recently by the HK Survey. This error in Fe-abundance estimate for C-stars arises from a lowering of the emitted flux in the continuum bandpasses of the KP (3933 A line of CaII) and particularly the HP2 (Hdelta) indices used to estimate [Fe/H] due to absorption from strong molecular bands. △ Less

Here we present the key results of detailed abundance analyses of 14 C-stars selected from the HES as candidate EMP stars, of ~50 such stars analyzed. About 80% of such C-stars show highly enhanced Ba as well, with C enhanced by a factor of about 100, and [Ba/C] roughly Solar. These stars often show prominent lead lines, The remaining 20% of the C-stars do not show an enhancemement of the s-process neutron capture elements around the Ba peak. They tend to be the most metal-poor stars studied. We suggest that all these EMP C-stars are the remnants of the secondary in a mass transfer binary system where the former primary was an AGB star, which transferred substantial mass at that evolutionary stage. The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES) II. Spectroscopic analysis of the survey sample

Abstract: We present the results of analysis of ``snapshot'' spectra of 253 metal-poor halo stars -3.8 < [Fe/H] < -1.5 obtained in the HERES survey. The spectra are analysed using an automated line profile analysis method based on the Spectroscopy Made Easy codes of Valenti & Piskunov. Elemental abundances of moderate precision have been obtained for 22 elements, C, Mg, Al, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co,… ▽ More We present the results of analysis of ``snapshot'' spectra of 253 metal-poor halo stars -3.8 < [Fe/H] < -1.5 obtained in the HERES survey. Among the sample of 253 stars, we find 8 r-II stars and 35 r-I stars. We also find three stars with strong enhancements of Eu which are s-process rich. A significant number of new very metal-poor stars are confirmed: 49 stars with [Fe/H] < -3 and 181 stars with -3 < [Fe/H] < -2. We find one star with [Fe/H] < -3.5. We find the scatter in the abundance ratios of Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, and Ni, with respect to Fe and Mg, to be similar to the estimated relative errors and thus the cosmic scatter to be small, perhaps even non-existent. The elements C, Sr, Y, Ba and Eu, and perhaps Zr, show scatter at [Fe/H] < -2.5 significantly larger than can be explained from the errors in the analysis, implying scatter which is cosmic in origin. Significant scatter is observed in abundance ratios between light and heavy neutron-capture elements at low metallicity and low levels of r-process enrichment. (*** abridged ***) △ Less

Identification of a complete sample of northern ROSAT All-Sky Survey X-ray sources. VIII. The late-type stellar component

The sample comprises 254 RASS sources with optical counterparts of spectral types F to M distributed over six study areas located at |b| >= 20 degr, and DEC >= -9 degr. Based on the lithium abundances half of the G-K stars were found to be younger than the Hyades (660 Myr). About 25% are comparable in age to the Pleiades (100 Myr). A small subsample of 10 stars is younger than the Pleiades. They are therefore most likely pre-main sequence stars. Kinematically the PMS and Pleiades-type stars appear to form a group with space velocities close to the Castor moving group but clearly distinct from the Local Association. △ Less

The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES). I. Project description, and discovery of two stars with strong enhancements of neutron-capture elements

Abstract: We report on a dedicated effort to identify and study metal-poor stars strongly enhanced in r-process elements ([r/Fe] > 1 dex; hereafter r-II stars), the Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES). Moderate-resolution (~2A) follow-up spectroscopy has been obtained for metal-poor giant candidates selected from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES) as well as the HK survey to ident… ▽ More We report on a dedicated effort to identify and study metal-poor stars strongly enhanced in r-process elements ([r/Fe] > 1 dex; hereafter r-II stars), the Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES). Moderate-resolution (~2A) follow-up spectroscopy has been obtained for metal-poor giant candidates selected from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES) as well as the HK survey to identify sharp-lined stars with [Fe/H] < -2.5dex. For several hundred confirmed metal-poor giants brighter than B~16.5mag (most of them from the HES), ``snapshot'' spectra (R~20,000; S/N~30 per pixel) are being obtained with VLT/UVES, with the main aim of finding the 2-3% r-II stars expected to be among them. These are studied in detail by means of higher resolution and higher S/N spectra. In this paper we describe a pilot study based on a set of 35 stars, including 23 from the HK survey, 8 from the HES, and 4 comparison stars. We discovered two new r-II stars, CS29497-004 ([Eu/Fe] = 1.64 +/- 0.22) and CS29491-069 ([Eu/Fe] = 1.08 +/- 0.23). A first abundance analysis of CS29497-004 yields that its abundances of Ba to Dy are on average enhanced by 1.5dex with respect to iron and the Sun and match a scaled solar r-process pattern well, while Th is underabundant relative to that pattern by 0.3dex, which we attribute to radioactive decay. That is, CS29497-004 seems not to belong to the class of r-process enhanced stars displaying an ``actinide boost'', like CS31082-001 (Hill et al. 2002), or CS30306-132 (Honda et al. 2004b). The abundance pattern agrees well with predictions of the phenomenological model of Qian & Wasserburg. △ Less

Optically bright Active Galactic Nuclei in the ROSAT-Faint Source Catalogue

Abstract: To build a large, optically bright, X-ray selected AGN sample we have correlated the ROSAT-FSC catalogue of X-ray sources with the USNO catalogue limited to objects brighter than O=16.5 and then with the APS database. Each of the 3,212 coincidences was classified using the slitless Hamburg spectra. 493 objects were found to be extended and 2,719 starlike. Using both the extended objects and the… ▽ More To build a large, optically bright, X-ray selected AGN sample we have correlated the ROSAT-FSC catalogue of X-ray sources with the USNO catalogue limited to objects brighter than O=16.5 and then with the APS database. Each of the 3,212 coincidences was classified using the slitless Hamburg spectra. 493 objects were found to be extended and 2,719 starlike. Using both the extended objects and the galaxies known from published catalogues we built up a sample of 185 galaxies with O_APS < 17.0 mag, which are high-probability counterparts of RASS-FSC X-ray sources. 130 galaxies have a redshift from the literature and for another 34 we obtained new spectra. The fraction of Seyfert galaxies in this sample is 20 %. To select a corresponding sample of 144 high-probability counterparts among the starlike sources we searched for very blue objects in an APS-based color-magnitude diagram. Forty-one were already known AGN and for another 91 objects we obtained new spectra, yielding 42 new AGN, increasing their number in the sample to 83. This confirms that surveys of bright QSOs are still significantly incomplete. On the other hand we find that, at a flux limit of 0.02 count /-1 and at this magnitude, only 40 % of all QSOs are detected by ROSAT. △ Less

Kinematical structure of the circumstellar environments of galactic B[e]-type stars

Abstract: High resolution line profiles are presented for selected forbidden and permitted emission lines of a sample of galactic B[e]-type stars. The spectral resolution corresponds to 5-7 km/s with the exception of some line profiles which were observed with a resolution of 9-13 km/s. All Ha profiles are characterized by a narrow split or single emission component with a width of about 150-250 km/s (FWH… ▽ More High resolution line profiles are presented for selected forbidden and permitted emission lines of a sample of galactic B[e]-type stars. The spectral resolution corresponds to 5-7 km/s with the exception of some line profiles which were observed with a resolution of 9-13 km/s. All Ha profiles are characterized by a narrow split or single emission component with a width of about 150-250 km/s (FWHM) and broad wings with a full width of ~1000-2000 km/s. The Ha profiles can be classified into three groups: double-peaked profiles representing the majority, single-peaked emission-line profiles, and normal P Cygni-type profiles. The forbidden lines exhibit in most cases double-peaked profiles. The split forbidden line profiles have peak separations of as little as 10 km/s. The ratio of violet to red emission peak intensities, V/R, is predominantly smaller or equal to 1. Theoretical profiles were calculated for the optically thin case. A latitude-dependent stellar wind with a radial expansion and a velocity decreasing from the pole to the equator was adopted. In addition an equatorial dust ring with various optical depths was assumed. This model can explain split lines and line asymmetries observed in some stars. Moreover, the V/R ratios can be understood in terms of this model. The comparison of the observed line profiles with the models thus confirms the assumption of disk-like line-formation regions as commonly adopted for B[e]-type stars. △ Less

The Hamburg/RASS Catalogue of optical identifications. Northern high-galactic latitude ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue X-ray sources

Abstract: We present the Hamburg/RASS Catalogue (HRC) of optical identifications of X-ray sources at high-galactic latitude. The HRC includes all X-ray sources from the ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue (RASS-BSC) with galactic latitude |b| >= 30 degr and declination delta >= 0 degr. In this part of the sky covering ~10 000 deg^2 the RASS-BSC contains 5341 X-ray sources. For the optical identification we used… ▽ More We present the Hamburg/RASS Catalogue (HRC) of optical identifications of X-ray sources at high-galactic latitude. The limiting magnitudes are 18.5 and 20, respectively. For 82% of the selected RASS-BSC an identification could be given. For the rest either no counterpart was visible in the error circle or a plausible identification was not possible. With ~42% AGN represent the largest group of X-ray emitters, \~31% have a stellar counterpart, whereas galaxies and cluster of galaxies comprise only ~4% and ~5%, respectively. In ~3% of the RASS-BSC sources no object was visible on our blue direct plates within 40 arcsec around the X-ray source position. The catalogue is used as a source for the selection of (nearly) complete samples of the various classes of X-ray emitters. △ Less

X-ray and optical observations of 1RXS J154814.5-452845: a new intermediate polar with soft X-ray emission

The source shows pulsations with a period of 693 s both in the optical and X-ray light curves and the detection of a synodic frequency strongly suggests that this is the rotation period of the white dwarf. Although t… ▽ More We report the identification of the ROSAT all-sky survey source 1RXS J154814.5-452845as new intermediate polar and present the results from follow-up optical and X-ray observations. The source shows pulsations with a period of 693 s both in the optical and X-ray light curves and the detection of a synodic frequency strongly suggests that this is the rotation period of the white dwarf. Although the one day aliasing and the sparse optical data coverage does not allow to unambiguously identify the orbital period, the most likely values of 9.37 h and 6.72 h add 1RXS J154814.5-452845 to the intermediate polars with the longest orbital periods known. The optical spectrum displays features from the late type secondary and shows the presence of broad absorption lines at \Hbet and higher order Balmer lines which may be a signature of the white dwarf atmosphere, very similar to V 709 Cas. The average X-ray spectra as obtained by the EPIC instruments on board XMM-Newton show hard emission typical for this class of objects but also the presence of soft blackbody-like emission similar to that seen from soft intermediate polars and thought to arise from the white dwarf surface heated by the hard X-rays. The best fit model comprises thermal emission from multi-temperature plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium with a continuous temperature distribution up to a maximum of $\sim$60 keV, an Fe fluorescence line at 6.4 keV and with equivalent width of 260 eV and a blackbody component with kT of 86 eV. The hard X-ray emission is absorbed by matter covering 47% of the X-ray source with an equivalent hydrogen density of $\sim$\ohcm{23}. The remaining hard emission is absorbed by a much reduced column density of 1.5\hcm{21} as is the soft blackbody emission. (truncated) △ Less

The New AM Her System RX J0704.2+6203. Northern Twin of BL Hyi

The luminosity class of the K star gives an estimate of the distance towards MWC 623 of 2.4(+1.4/-0.9) kpc. This is consistent with the kinematic distance of 2.0(+0.6/-0.3) kpc. The masses derived from the locations of the binary components in the H-R diagram are 7+-1.5 Msun and 7.5+-2.5 Msun for the B and K star, respectively, i.e. the mass ratio is close to 1. Both stars are coeval with an age of 50+10/-20 Myr as shown by the comparison with isochrones. The high luminosity of the K star excludes a pre-main sequence evolutionary phase as explanation for the strong LiI lambda 6708 absorption line observed in the late-type component. Rather, the high lithium abundance is a consequence of the young age. Likewise, the B[e] star is a slightly evolved object starting it post-main sequence evolution. △ Less

The late-type stellar component in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey at high galactic latitude

Abstract: We investigated the properties of the late-type stellar component in the RASS at high-galactic latitude |b| based on an optically identified sample of ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) X-ray sources. The stellar sample comprises ~250 objects in six study areas covering 685 deg^2 at |b|> 20 deg. We spectroscopically detected a significant fraction of lithium-rich pre-main sequence (PMS) objects includi… ▽ More We investigated the properties of the late-type stellar component in the RASS at high-galactic latitude |b| based on an optically identified sample of ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) X-ray sources. The stellar sample comprises ~250 objects in six study areas covering 685 deg^2 at |b|> 20 deg. We spectroscopically detected a significant fraction of lithium-rich pre-main sequence (PMS) objects including even M-type stars. In an area located about 20 deg south of the Tau-Aur star formation region (SFR) and close to the Gould Belt, we found a large fraction of 40% PMS stars among the K-type stellar counterparts. In other areas we found a smaller but still significant fraction of Li-rich stars. We compared the log N - log S distribution with published galactic distribution models for different age groups and with results from the ROSAT Galactic Plane Survey. For the sample south of Tau-Aur we find an excess of PMS stars compared to model calculations while in the other areas the observed log N - log S is close to the model predictions. We started to investigate the proper motions and radial velocities of both, the young lithium-rich and the older stellar counterparts. Radial velocities and proper motions of the Li-rich stars in the area south of Tau-Aur are consistent with membership to the Tau-Aur SFR. The non-PMS stars show a wider spread in radial velocities and proper motions. △ Less

Classical Be stars lack hot circumstellar dust and strong forbidden low-excitation emission lines, which are typical characteristics produced by B[e]-type stars. While classical Be stars are a rather uniform group of early-type stars, B[e]-type stars form a quite heterogeneous group, very often of poorly known evolutionary status, comprising such diverse types of objects as near main-sequence objects, evolved low-mass proto-planetray nebulae and massive evolved hot supergiants. Even pre-main sequence Herbig Ae/Be stars sometimes find their way into the group of B[e] stars. However, despite these dissimilarities classical Be stars and B[e]-type stars, share a common property, namely the non-sphericity of their circumstellar envelopes. △ Less

Abstract: We present the statistical evaluation of a count rate and area limited complete sample of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) comprising 674 sources. The RASS sources are located in six study areas outside the galactic plane (|b^II| >= 20 deg) and north of delta = -9 deg. The total sample contains 274 (40.7%) stars, 26 (3.9%) galaxies, 284 (42.1%) AGN, 78 (11.6%) clusters of galaxies and 12 (1.8%) u… ▽ More We present the statistical evaluation of a count rate and area limited complete sample of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) comprising 674 sources. The RASS sources are located in six study areas outside the galactic plane (|b^II| >= 20 deg) and north of delta = -9 deg. The total sample contains 274 (40.7%) stars, 26 (3.9%) galaxies, 284 (42.1%) AGN, 78 (11.6%) clusters of galaxies and 12 (1.8%) unidentified sources. These percentages vary considerably between the individual study areas due to different mean hydrogen column densities N_H . For the accuracy of the RASS positions, i.e., the distance between optical source and X-ray position, a 90% error circle of about 30 arcsec has been found. Hardness and X-ray-to-optical flux ratios show in part systematic differences between the different object classes. However, since the corresponding parameter spaces overlap significantly for the different classes, an unambiguous identification on the basis of the X-ray data alone is not possible. The majority of the AGN in our sample are found at rather low redshifts with the median value of the whole sample being z_med=0.24. The median values for the individual fields vary between z_med=0.15 and z_med}=0.36. The slope of the log N-log S distributions for our AGN (-1.44 +- 0.09) is in good agreement with the euclidian slope of -1.5. The BL Lacs (with a slope of -0.72+-0.13) exhibit a much flatter distribution. △ Less

The isolated neutron star candidate RX J1605.3+3249

X-ray observations spanning 6.5 years fail to reveal any flux or spectral varia… ▽ More We report on X-ray and optical observations of a ROSAT X-ray source, RX J1605.3+3249, selected from the all-sky survey on the basis of its spectral softness and lack of bright optical counterpart. The ROSAT PSPC energy distribution is well fitted by a blackbody with kT = 92 +/- 6 eV and Nh =1.1 +/- 0.4 x 10^20 cm^-2. X-ray observations spanning 6.5 years fail to reveal any flux or spectral variability on any time scales. The ROSAT HRI error circle only contains a R = 23.25 M star which is unlikely to be associated with the X-ray source. We conclude that RX J1605.3+3249 is a probable nearby isolated neutron star detected from its thermal emission. The present data do not allow to unambiguously determine the X-ray powering mechanism, cooling from a young neutron star or heating by accretion from the interstellar medium onto an old neutron star. However, the long term stability of the X-ray flux favours the young neutron star hypothesis. △ Less

Disk winds of B[e] supergiants

A New Cataclysmic Variable RX J0757.0+6306: Candidate for the Shortest Period Intermediate Polar

Identification of selected sources from the ROSAT Galactic Plane Survey - I

Abstract: We report on optical searches in the error circles of 93 ROSAT survey sources located at low galactic latitudes (|b| < 20 deg). These sources were extracted from the ROSAT Galactic Plane Survey using various selection criteria on hardness ratio, X-ray and optical brightness and integrated galactic absorption in the direction of the source. We find optical identifications in 76 cases, among which… ▽ More We report on optical searches in the error circles of 93 ROSAT survey sources located at low galactic latitudes (|b| < 20 deg). These sources were extracted from the ROSAT Galactic Plane Survey using various selection criteria on hardness ratio, X-ray and optical brightness and integrated galactic absorption in the direction of the source. We find optical identifications in 76 cases, among which are 25 new AGN, 6 new CVs and a new Be/X-ray binary. In order to illustrate the relevance of the source selections applied here, we cross-correlated the ROSAT all-sky survey bright source list with SIMBAD. Different classes of X-ray emitters populate distinct regions of a multi dimensional parameter space involving flux ratios, galactic latitude and Nh. This relatively good segregation offers the possibility to build source samples with enhanced probability of identification with a given class. Complete optical identification of such subsamples could eventually be used to compute meaningful probabilities of identification for all sources using as basis a restricted set of multi-wavelength information. △ Less

RX J0719.2+6557: A new eclipsing polar
