Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. We further present results for other potential signatures with sharp spectral features, e.g.~box-shaped spectra, that would likewise very clearly point to a particle dark matter origin.

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. In addition, we will present and discuss the prospects of potential follow-up strategies with CTA.

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $α_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $α_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $Δα_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $τ_χ>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario.

In cosmological $N$-body simulations of warm dark matter, thermal velocities of dark-matter particles are sometimes taken into account by adding random initial velocities to the particles of simulation. However, a particle in the $N$-body system represents a huge collection of dark-matter particles, whose average thermal velocity is very close to zero. We consider justification of the procedure of adding thermal velocities in $N$-body simulations and build a simple model of their influence on the power spectrum. Our model captures the physical effect of suppression of the power spectrum at small wave numbers and also explains its artificial enhancement at large wave numbers, observed in numerical simulations with added thermal velocities. The cause of this enhancement is the disturbance of the growth rate of the density profile introduced when adding random initial thermal velocities. Specifically, the model predicts a turnover in the behavior of the simulated power spectrum at a certain wave number $k_*$, beyond which it grows as $P (k) \propto k^2$. Our treatment is generalized to a system consisting of several matter components with different thermal velocity dispersion. We also estimate the effects of discreteness related to the bulk velocity field and establish the conditions under which these effects dominate over those of thermal velocities.

The local Cosmic Ray (CR) energy spectrum exhibits a spectral softening at energies around 3~PeV. Sources which are capable of accelerating hadrons to such energies are called hadronic PeVatrons. However, hadronic PeVatrons have not yet been firmly identified within the Galaxy. Several source classes, including Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs), have been proposed as PeVatron candidates. The potential to search for hadronic PeVatrons with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is assessed. The focus is on the usage of very high energy $γ$-ray spectral signatures for the identification of PeVatrons. Assuming that SNRs can accelerate CRs up to knee energies, the number of Galactic SNRs which can be identified as PeVatrons with CTA is estimated within a model for the evolution of SNRs. Additionally, the potential of a follow-up observation strategy under moonlight conditions for PeVatron searches is investigated. Statistical methods for the identification of PeVatrons are introduced, and realistic Monte--Carlo simulations of the response of the CTA observatory to the emission spectra from hadronic PeVatrons are performed. Based on simulations of a simplified model for the evolution for SNRs, the detection of a $γ$-ray signal from in average 9 Galactic PeVatron SNRs is expected to result from the scan of the Galactic plane with CTA after 10 hours of exposure. CTA is also shown to have excellent potential to confirm these sources as PeVatrons in deep observations with $\mathcal{O}(100)$ hours of exposure per source.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $γ$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $γ$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $γ$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $γ$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $γ$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We conclude on the synergies between CTA and other upcoming facilities that will foster the growth of $γ$-ray cosmology.

We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies.

This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). We present here the optimised and final telescope arrays for both CTA sites, as well as their foreseen performance, resulting from the analysis of three different large-scale Monte Carlo productions.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array, CTA, will be the major global observatory for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy over the next decade and beyond. The scientific potential of CTA is extremely broad: from understanding the role of relativistic cosmic particles to the search for dark matter. CTA is an explorer of the extreme universe, probing environments from the immediate neighbourhood of black holes to cosmic voids on the largest scales. Covering a huge range in photon energy from 20 GeV to 300 TeV, CTA will improve on all aspects of performance with respect to current instruments.
The observatory will operate arrays on sites in both hemispheres to provide full sky coverage and will hence maximize the potential for the rarest phenomena such as very nearby supernovae, gamma-ray bursts or gravitational wave transients. With 99 telescopes on the southern site and 19 telescopes on the northern site, flexible operation will be possible, with sub-arrays available for specific tasks. CTA will have important synergies with many of the new generation of major astronomical and astroparticle observatories. Multi-wavelength and multi-messenger approaches combining CTA data with those from other instruments will lead to a deeper understanding of the broad-band non-thermal properties of target sources.
The CTA Observatory will be operated as an open, proposal-driven observatory, with all data available on a public archive after a pre-defined proprietary period. Scientists from institutions worldwide have combined together to form the CTA Consortium. This Consortium has prepared a proposal for a Core Programme of highly motivated observations. The programme, encompassing approximately 40% of the available observing time over the first ten years of CTA operation, is made up of individual Key Science Projects (KSPs), which are presented in this document.

Extended dark matter (DM) substructures may play the role of microlenses in the Milky Way and in extragalactic gravitational lens systems (GLSs). We compare microlensing effects caused by point masses (Schwarzschild lenses) and extended clumps of matter using a simple model for the lens mapping. A superposition of the point mass and the extended clump is also considered. For special choices of the parameters, this model may represent a cusped clump of cold DM, a cored clump of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) or an ultra compact minihalo of DM surrounding a massive point-like object. We built the resulting micro-amplification curves for various parameters of one clump moving with respect to the source in order to estimate differences between the light curves caused by clumps and by point lenses. The results show that it may be difficult to distinguish between these models. However, some region of the clump parameters can be restricted by considering the high amplification events at the present level of photometric accuracy. Then we estimate the statistical properties of the amplification curves in extragalactic GLSs. For this purpose, an ensemble of amplification curves is generated yielding the autocorrelation functions (ACFs) of the curves for different choices of the system parameters. We find that there can be a significant difference between these ACFs if the clump size is comparable with typical Einstein radii; as a rule, the contribution of clumps makes the ACFs less steep.

For this sample we treated jointly the X-ray spectra observed by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL missions for the total spectral range of 0.5-250 keV. Photon index Γ, relative reflection R, equivalent width of Fe $K_α$ line (EW Fe $K_α$), hydrogen column density $N_{H}$, exponential cut-off energy $E_{c}$ and intrinsic luminosity $L_{corr}$ are determined for all objects of the sample. We investigated correlations Γ- R, EW Fe $K_α$ - $L_{corr}$, Γ- $E_{c}$, EW Fe $K_α$ - $N_{H}$. Dependence Γ- R for Seyfert 1 and 2 type of galaxies has been investigated separately. We found that the relative reflection parameter at low power-law indexes for Seyfert 2 galaxies is systematically higher than for Seyfert 1 ones. This can be related to an increasing contribution of the reflected radiation from the gas-dust torus. Our data show that there exists some anticorrelation between EW Fe $K_α$ and $L_{corr}$, but it is not strong. We have not found statistically significant deviations from the AGN Unified Model.

Scenarios of cosmological evolution having inflationary stages are studied by using equations of state (EoS) inspired by the quark bag model. A crucial point is the existence of states where the specific enthalpy of the cosmological fluid vanishes. A large class of barotropic EoS admits, depending upon initial conditions, for a concrete equation of state, analogs of the "Big Rip" as well as solutions describing an exponential inflation followed by the usual matter dominance. We found scalar field potentials that mimic the behavior of the cosmological scale factor in case of special EoS from the above class. Extensions to more general two-parametric EoS are discussed that describe a pre-inflationary evolution.

We present here the results of our analysis of X-ray properties of Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 3281, based on the observational data obtained by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL within the energy ranges 0.2-12 keV and 20-150 keV, respectively. The XMM-Newton spectrum of this object is presented for the first time. We show that fitting the X-ray spectrum of this galaxy with models based on the reflection from the disc with infinite column density yields non-physical results. More appropriate fit takes into account both transmitted and reflected emission, passed through a gas-dusty torus-like structure. Keeping this in mind, to model the inhomogeneous clumpy torus, we used the MYTorus model. Hence, we propose that the torus of NGC 3281 is not continuous structure, but it consists of separate clouds, which is in a good agreement with the results of near-IR observations. Using this assumption, we found that the torus inclination angle and the hydrogen column density are 66.98^{+2.63}_{-1.34} degrees and 2.08^{+0.35}_{-0.18}x10^{24} cm^{-2}, respectively. Also, the emission of the hot diffuse gas with temperature ~590 eV and warm absorption were detected.

We propose a method of calculation of the power spectrum of cosmological perturbations by means of a direct numerical integration of hydrodynamic equations in the Fourier space for a random ensemble of initial conditions with subsequent averaging procedure. This method can be an alternative to the cosmological N-body simulations. We test realizability of this method in case of one-dimensional motion of gravitating matter pressureless shells. In order to test the numerical simulations, we found an analytical solution which describes one-dimensional collapse of plane shells. The results are used to study a nonlinear interaction of different Fourier modes.

Gravitational lensing deals with general-relativistic effects in the propagation of electromagnetic radiation. We consider wavelength-dependent contributions in case of a (micro)lensing of an extended Gaussian source by a point mass under standard assumptions about the incoherent emission of different source elements. Analytical expressions for the power spectrum of a microlensed radiation, which are effective in case of a large source, are obtained. If the source center, the mass, and an observer are on a straight line, the power spectrum is found in a closed form in terms of a hypergeometric function. In the case of general locations of the lens and the source, the result is presented in the form of a series. Approximate analytic expressions for the power spectrum in the case of a large source and high frequencies are obtained.

There is a considerable brightness magnification in one of the quasar images during HAE. Grieger, Kayser, and Refsdal (1988) proposed to use HAEs to study the central regions of quasars in GLSs. In this paper, we consider some problems concerning the identification of different source types on the basis of the HAE observations. We compare the results of light curve simulations to estimate a feasibility to distinguish different source models in GLSs. Analytic approximation methods yielding solutions of the lens equation in a vicinity of fold caustic crossing events are presented. The results are used to obtain amplification factors, which the higher-order corrections for the Gaussian, power-law, and limb-darkening models of a source take into account.

We propose two methods that enable us to obtain approximate solutions of the lens equation near a fold caustic with an arbitrary degree of accuracy. We obtain "post-linear" corrections to the well-known formula in the linear caustic approximation for the total amplification of two critical images of a point source. In this case, in order to obtain the nontrivial corrections we had to go beyond the approximation orders earlier used by Keeton et al. and to take into account the Taylor expansion of the lens equation near caustic up to the fourth order. Corresponding analytical expressions are derived for the amplification in cases of the Gaussian and power-law extended source models; the amplifications depend on three additional fitting parameters. Conditions of neglecting the correction terms are analysed. The modified formula for the amplification is applied to the fitting of light curves of the Q2237+0305 gravitational lens system in a vicinity of the high amplification events (HAEs). We show that the introduction of some "post-linear" corrections reduces chi^2 by 30% in the case of known HAE on the light curve of image C (1999). These corrections can be important for a precise comparison of different source models with regard for observational data. Key words: gravitational lensing: micro - quasars: individual (Q2237+0305) - gravitational lensing: strong - methods: analytical

We analyze the quasar two-point correlation function (2pCF) within the redshift interval $0.8<z<2.2$ using a sample of 52303 quasars selected from the recent 7th Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our approach to 2pCF uses a concept of locally Lorentz (Fermi) frame for determination of the distance between objects and permutation method of the random catalogue generation. Assuming the spatially flat cosmological model with given $Ω_Λ=0.726$, we found that the real-space 2pCF is fitted well with the power-low model within the distance range $1<σ<35$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc with the correlation length $r_{0}=5.85\pm0.33$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc and the slope $γ=1.87\pm0.07$. The redshift-space 2pCF is approximated with $s_{0}=6.43\pm0.63$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc and $γ=1.21\pm0.24$ for $1<s<10$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc, and $s_{0}=7.37\pm0.81$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc and $γ=1.90\pm0.24$ for $10<s<35$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc. For distances $s>10\,h^{-1}$ Mpc the parameter describing the large-scale infall to density inhomogeneities is $β=0.63\pm0.10$ with the linear bias $b=1.44\pm0.22$ that marginally (within 2$σ$) agrees with the linear theory of cosmological perturbations. We discuss possibilities to obtain a statistical estimate of the random component of quasars velocities (different from the large-scale infall). We note rather slight dependence of quasars velocity dispersion upon the 2pCF parameters in the region $r<2$ Mpc.

Here we analyze the XMM-Newton observation of the quasar in the gravitational lens system Q2237+0305 taken during 2002. Combined spectra of the four images of the quasar in this system were extracted and modelled with a power-law model. Statistical analysis was used to test the variability of the total flux. The total X-ray flux from all the images of this quadruple gravitational lens system is 6 x 10^{-13} erg/cm2/s in the range 0.2-10 keV, showing no significant X-ray spectral variability during almost 42 ks of the observation time. Fitting of the cleaned source spectrum yields a photon power-law index of Gamma=1.82+0.07/-0.08. The X-ray lightcurves obtained after background subtraction are compatible with the hypothesis of a stationary flux from the source.

We look for cosmologies with a scalar field (dark energy without cosmological constant), which mimic the standard $ΛCDM$ cosmological model yielding exactly the same large-scale geometry described by the evolution of the Hubble parameter (i.e. photometric distance and angular diameter distance as functions on $z$). Asymptotic behavior of the field solutions is studied in the case of spatially flat Universe with pressureless matter and separable scalar field Lagrangians (power-law kinetic term + power-law potential). Exact analytic solutions are found in some special cases. A number of models have the field solutions with infinite behavior in the past or even singular behavior at finite redshifts. We point out that introduction of the cosmological scalar field involves some degeneracy leading to lower precision in determination of $Ω_m$. To remove this degeneracy additional information is needed beyond the data on large-scale geometry.
