Highly reddened type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) with low total-to-selective visual extinction ratio values, $R_V$, also show peculiar linear polarization wavelength dependencies with peak polarizations at short wavelengths ($λ_{max} \lesssim 0.4 μm$). It is not clear why sightlines to SNe Ia display such different continuum polarization profiles from interstellar sightlines in the Milky Way with similar $R_V$ values. We investigate polarization profiles of a sample of Galactic stars with low $R_V$ values, along anomalous extinction sightlines, with the aim to find similarities to the polarization profiles that we observe in SN Ia sightlines. We undertook spectropolarimetry of 14 stars, and used archival data for three additional stars, and run dust extinction and polarization simulations to infer a simple dust model that can reproduce the observed extinction and polarization curves. Our sample of Galactic stars with low $R_V$ values and anomalous extinction sightlines displays normal polarization profiles with an average $λ_{max} \sim 0.53 {μm}$, and is consistent within 3$σ$ to a larger coherent sample of Galactic stars from literature. Despite the low $R_V$ values of dust towards the stars in our sample, the polarization curves do not show any similarity to the continuum polarization curves observed towards SNe Ia with low $R_V$ values. There is a correlation between the best-fit Serkowski parameters $K$ and $λ_{max}$, but we did not find any significant correlation between $R_V$ and $λ_{max}$. Our simulations show that the $K-λ_{max}$ relationship is an intrinsic property of polarization. Furthermore, we have shown that in order to reproduce polarization curves with normal $λ_{max}$ and low $R_V$ values, a population of large (a $\geq 0.1 μm$) interstellar silicate grains must be contained in the dust's composition.

We present a study of the continuum polarization over the 400--600 nm range of 19 Type Ia SNe obtained with FORS at the VLT. We separate them in those that show Na I D lines at the velocity of their hosts and those that do not. Continuum polarization of the sodium sample near maximum light displays a broad range of values, from extremely polarized cases like SN 2006X to almost unpolarized ones like SN 2011ae. The non--sodium sample shows, typically, smaller polarization values. The continuum polarization of the sodium sample in the 400--600 nm range is linear with wavelength and can be characterized by the mean polarization (P$_{\rm{mean}}$). Its values span a wide range and show a linear correlation with color, color excess, and extinction in the visual band. Larger dispersion correlations were found with the equivalent width of the Na I D and Ca II H & K lines, and also a noisy relation between P$_{\rm{mean}}$ and $R_{V}$, the ratio of total to selective extinction. Redder SNe show stronger continuum polarization, with larger color excesses and extinctions. We also confirm that high continuum polarization is associated with small values of $R_{V}$.
The correlation between extinction and polarization -- and polarization angles -- suggest that the dominant fraction of dust polarization is imprinted in interstellar regions of the host galaxies.
We show that Na I D lines from foreground matter in the SN host are usually associated with non-galactic ISM, challenging the typical assumptions in foreground interstellar polarization models.

We present optical spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry of the Type IIb SN 2008aq 16 days and 27 days post-explosion. The spectrum of SN 2008aq remained dominated by Halpha P Cygni profile at both epochs, but showed a significant increase in the strength of the helium features, which is characteristic of the transition undergone by supernovae between Type IIb and Type Ib. Comparison of the spectra of SN 2008aq to other Type IIb SNe (SN 1993J, SN 2011dh, and SN 2008ax) at similar epochs revealed that the helium lines in SN 2008aq are much weaker, suggesting that its progenitor was stripped to a lesser degree. SN 2008aq also showed significant levels of continuum polarisation at p_cont = 0.70 (+/- 0.22) % in the first epoch, increasing to p_cont = 1.21 (+/- 0.33) % by the second epoch. Moreover, the presence of loops in the q-u planes of Halpha and He I in the second epoch suggests a departure from axial symmetry.

We present six epochs of spectropolarimetric observations and one epoch of spectroscopy of the Type Ib SN iPTF 13bvn. The epochs of these observations correspond to $-$10 to $+$61 days with respect to the {\it r}-band light curve maximum. The continuum is intrinsically polarised to the $0.2-0.4\%$ level throughout the observations, implying asphericities of $\sim10\%$ in the shape of the photosphere. We observe significant line polarisation associated with the spectral features of Ca II IR3, He I/Na I D, He I λλ6678, 7065, Fe II λ4924 and O I λ7774. We propose that an absorption feature at $\sim 6200\mathrmÅ$, usually identified as Si II $λ6355$, is most likely to be high velocity $\mathrm{Hα}$ at $-16,400$ $\mathrm{km \; s^{-1}}$. Two distinctly polarised components, separated in velocity, are detected for both He I/Na I D and Ca II IR3, indicating the presence of two discrete line forming regions in the ejecta in both radial velocity space and in the plane of the sky. We use the polarisation of He I $λ5876$ as a tracer of sources of non-thermal excitation in the ejecta; finding that the bulk of the radioactive nickel was constrained to lie interior to $\sim 50-65\%$ of the ejecta radius. The observed polarisation is also discussed in the context of the possible progenitor system of iPTF 13bvn, with our observations favouring the explosion of a star with an extended, distorted envelope rather than a compact Wolf-Rayet star.

Aims: The aim of this paper is twofold: 1) to investigate the properties of extragalactic dust and compare them to what is seen in the Galaxy; 2) to address in an independent way the problem of the anomalous extinction curves reported for reddened Type Ia Supernovae (SN) in connection to the environments in which they explode. Methods: The properties of the dust are derived from the wavelength dependence of the continuum polarization observed in four reddened Type Ia SN: 1986G, 2006X, 2008fp, and 2014J. [...] Results: All four objects are characterized by exceptionally low total-to-selective absorption ratios (R_V) and display an anomalous interstellar polarization law, characterized by very blue polarization peaks. In all cases the polarization position angle is well aligned with the local spiral structure. While SN~1986G is compatible with the most extreme cases of interstellar polarization known in the Galaxy, SN2006X, 2008fp, and 2014J show unprecedented behaviours. The observed deviations do not appear to be connected to selection effects related to the relatively large amounts of reddening characterizing the objects in the sample. Conclusions: The dust responsible for the polarization of these four SN is most likely of interstellar nature. The polarization properties can be interpreted in terms of a significantly enhanced abundance of small grains. The anomalous behaviour is apparently associated with the properties of the galactic environment in which the SN explode, rather than with the progenitor system from which they originate. For the extreme case of SN2014J, we cannot exclude the contribution of light scattered by local material; however, the observed polarization properties require an ad hoc geometrical dust distribution.

We present well-sampled $UBVRIJHK$ photometry of SN 2002fk starting 12 days before maximum light through 122 days after peak brightness, along with a series of 15 optical spectra from -4 to +95 days since maximum. Our observations show the presence of C II lines in the early-time spectra of SN 2002fk, expanding at ~11,000 km s$^{-1}~$ and persisting until ~8 days past maximum light with a velocity of $\sim$9,000 km s$^{-1}~$. SN 2002fk is characterized by a small velocity gradient of $\dot v_{Si~II}=26$ km s$^{-1}$ day$^{-1}$, possibly caused by an off-center explosion with the ignition region oriented towards the observer. The connection between viewing angle of an off-center explosion and the presence of C II in the early time spectrum suggests that the observation of C II could be also due to a viewing angle effect. Adopting the Cepheid distance to NGC 1309 we provide the first $H_{0}$ value based on near-IR measurements of a Type Ia supernova between 63.0$\pm$ 0.8 ($\pm$ 2.8 systematic) and 66.7$\pm$1.0 ($\pm$ 3.5 systematic) km/s/Mpc, depending on the absolute magnitude/decline rate relationship adopted. It appears that the near-IR yields somewhat lower (6-9 %) $H_0$ values than the optical. It is essential to further examine this issue by (1) expanding the sample of high-quality near-IR light curves of SNe in the Hubble flow, and (2) increasing the number of nearby SNe with near-IR SN light curves and precise Cepheid distances, which affords the promise to deliver a more precise determination of $H_0$.

Spectropolarimetry provides the means to probe the 3D geometries of Supernovae at early times. We report spectropolarimetric observations of the Type Ia Supernova 2012fr at four epochs: -11, -5, +2 and +24 days, with respect to B-lightcurve maximum. SN 2012fr is a normal Type Ia SN, similar to SNe 1990N, 2000cx and 2005hj (that all exhibit low velocity decline rates for the principal Si II line). The SN displays high velocity components at -11 days that are highly polarized. The polarization of these features decreases as they become weaker from -5 days. At +2 days, the polarization angles of the low velocity components of silicon and calcium are identical and oriented at 90 degrees relative to the high velocity Ca component. In addition to having very different velocities, the high and low velocity Ca components have orthogonal distributions in the plane of the sky. The continuum polarization for the SN at all four epochs is low <0.1%. We conclude that the low level of continuum polarization is inconsistent with the merger-induced explosion scenario. The simple axial symmetry evident from the polarization angles of the high velocity and low velocity Ca components, along with the presence of high velocity components of Si and Ca, are consistent with the pulsating delayed detonation model. We predict that, during the nebular phase, SN 2012fr will display blue-shifted emission lines of Fe-group elements.

The diffuse intracluster light (ICL) contains a significant fraction of the total stellar mass in clusters of galaxies, and contributes in roughly equal proportion as the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) to the total baryon content of clusters. Because of the potential importance of understanding the origin of the ICL in the context of the formation and evolution of structure in the Universe, the field has recently undergone a revival both in the quality and quantity of observational and theoretical investigations. Due to cosmological dimming, the observational work has mostly concentrated on low redshift clusters, but clearly observations at higher redshifts can provide interesting clues about the evolution of the diffuse component. In this paper we present the first results of a program to characterize the ICL of intermediate redshift clusters. We find that at z ~ 0.3, the X-ray cluster RX J0054.0-2823 already has a significant ICL and that the fraction of the total light in the ICL and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) is comparable to that of similar clusters at lower redshift. We also find that the kinematics of the ICL is consistent with it being the remnant of tidally destroyed galaxies streaming in the central regions of the cluster, which has three central giant elliptical galaxies acting as an efficient "grinding machine". Our cluster has a bi-modal radial-velocity distribution and thus two possible values for the velocity dispersion. We find that the cluster fits well in the correlation between BCG+ICL fraction and cluster mass for a range of velocity dispersions, leading us to question the validity of a relevant correlation between these two quantities.

We present galaxy spectroscopic data on a pencil beam of $10.75' \times7.5'$ centered on the X-ray cluster RXJ0054.0-2823 at $z = 0.29$. We study the spectral evolution of galaxies from $z=1$ down to the cluster redshift in a magnitude-limited sample at $\rm R\leq23$, for which the statistical properties of the sample are well understood. We divide emission-line galaxies in star-forming galaxies, LINERs, and Seyferts by using emission-line ratios of [OII], $\rm Hβ$, and [OIII], and derive stellar fractions from population synthesis models. We focus our analysis on absorption and low-ionization galaxies. For absorption-line galaxies we recover the well known result that these galaxies have had no detectable evolution since $z\sim0.6-0.7$, but we also find that in the range $z=0.65-1$ at least 50% of the stars in bright absorption systems are younger than 2.5Gyr. Faint absorption-line galaxies in the cluster at $z = 0.29$ also had significant star formation during the previous 2-3Gyr, while their brighter counterparts seem to be composed only of old stars. At $z\sim0.8$, our dynamically young cluster had a truncated red-sequence. This result seems to be consistent with a scenario where the final assembly of E/S0 took place at $z<1$. In the volume-limited range $0.35\leq z\leq0.65$ we find that 23% of the early-type galaxies have LINER-like spectra with $\rm Hβ$ in absorption and a significant component of A stars. The vast majority of LINERs in our sample have significant populations of young and intermediate-aged stars and are thus not related to AGN, but to the population of `retired galaxies' recently identified by Cid-Fernandes et al. (2010) in the SDSS. Early-type LINERs with various fractions of A stars, and E+A galaxies appear to play an important role in the formation of the red sequence.

Further to the data presented by Chornock et al., (2006), at -4 days before maximum, we present data of this object taken on 9 November 2005 (near maximum) and 23 November (+ two weeks) that show the continuum and most of the spectral lines to be polarized at levels of about 0.2-0.3%. At both epochs the data corresponds to the Spectropolarimetric Type D1. The general low level of line polarization suggests that the line forming regions for most species observed in the spectrum have a similar shape to that of the photosphere, which deviates from a spherical symmetry by <10%. In comparison with spectropolarimetry of Type Ia and Core-collapse SNe at similar epochs, we find that the properties of SN 2005hk are most similar to those of Type Ia SNe. In particular, we find the low levels of continuum and line polarization to indicate that the explosion mechanism is approximately spherical, with homogeneous ejecta (unlike the chemically segregated ejecta of CCSNe). We discuss the possibility that SN 2005hk was the result of the pure deflagration of a white dwarf and note the issues concerning this interpretation.

We present a compilation of the geometry measures acquired using optical and IR spectroscopy and optical spectropolarimetry to probe the explosion geometry of Type Ia SNe. Polarization measurements are sensitive to asymmetries in the plane of the sky, whereas line profiles in nebular phase spectra are expected to trace asymmetries perpendicular to the plane of the sky. The combination of these two measures can overcome their respective projection effects, completely probing the 3D structures of these events. For 9 normal Type Ia SNe, we find that the polarization of \ion{Si}{2} $λ6355$ at 5 days before maximum ($p_{Si\,II}$) is well correlated with its velocity evolution ($\dot{\rm v}_{Si\,II}$), implying $\dot{\rm v}_{Si\,II}$ is predominantly due to the asymmetry of the SNe. We find only a weak correlation between the polarization of \ion{Si}{2} and the reported velocities (${\rm v}_{neb}$) for peak emission of optical \ion{Fe}{2} and \ion{Ni}{2} lines in nebular spectra. Our sample is biased, with polarization measurements being only available for normal SNe which subsequently exhibited positive (i.e. redshifted) ${\rm v}_{neb}$. In unison these indicators are consistent with an off-centre delayed detonation, in which the outer layers are dominated by a spherical oxygen layer, mixed with an asymmetric distribution of intermediate mass elements. The combination of spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric indicators suggests a single geometric configuration for normal Type Ia SNe, with some of the diversity of observed properties arising from orientation effects.
