Abstract:
We report spectropolarimetric observations of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021rhu at four epochs: $-$7, +0, +36, and +79 days relative to its $B$-band maximum luminosity. A wavelength-dependent continuum polarization peaking at $3890 \pm 93$ Angstroms and reaching a level of $p_{\rm max}=1.78% \pm 0.02$% was found. The peak of the polarization curve is bluer than is typical in the Milky Way, indica…

The peak of the polarization curve is bluer than is typical in the Milky Way, indicating a larger proportion of small dust grains along the sightline to the SN. After removing the interstellar polarization, we found a pronounced increase of the polarization in the CaII near-infrared triplet, from $\sim$0.3% at day $-$7 to $\sim$2.5% at day +79. No temporal evolution in high-resolution flux spectra across the NaID and CaIIH&K features was seen from days +39 to +74, indicating that the late-time increase in polarization is intrinsic to the SN as opposed to being caused by scattering of SN photons in circumstellar or interstellar matter. We suggest that an explanation for the late-time rise of the CaII near-infrared triplet polarization may be the alignment of calcium atoms in a weak magnetic field through optical excitation/pumping by anisotropic radiation from the SN.

Abstract:
Multi-planet systems are valuable arenas for investigating exoplanet architectures and comparing planetary siblings. TOI-1246 is one such system, with a moderately bright K dwarf ($\rm{V=11.6,~K=9.9}$) and four transiting sub-Neptunes identified by TESS with orbital periods of $4.31~\rm{d},~5.90~\rm{d},~18.66~\rm{d}$, and $~37.92~\rm{d}$. We collected 130 radial velocity observations with Keck/HIRES and TNG/HARPS-N to measure planet masses. We refit the 14 sectors of TESS photometry to refine planet radii ($\rm{2.97 \pm 0.06~R_\oplus},\rm{2.47 \pm 0.08~R_\oplus}, \rm{3.46 \pm 0.09~R_\oplus}$, $\rm{3.72 \pm 0.16~R_\oplus}$), and confirm the four planets. We find that TOI-1246 e is substantially more massive than the three inner planets ($\rm{8.1 \pm 1.1 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{8.8 \pm 1.2 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{5.3 \pm 1.7 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{14.8 \pm 2.3 M_\oplus}$). The two outer planets, TOI-1246 d and TOI-1246 e, lie near to the 2:1 resonance ($\rm{P_{e}/P_{d}=2.03}$) and exhibit transit timing variations. TOI-1246 is one of the brightest four-planet systems, making it amenable for continued observations. It is one of only six systems with measured masses and radii for all four transiting planets. The planet densities range from $\rm{0.70 \pm 0.24}$ to $3.21 \pm 0.44 \rm{g/cm^3}$, implying a range of bulk and atmospheric compositions. We also report a fifth planet candidate found in the RV data with a minimum mass of 25.6 $\pm$ 3.6 $\rm{M_\oplus}$. This planet candidate is exterior to TOI-1246 e with a candidate period of 93.8 d, and we discuss the implications if it is confirmed to be planetary in nature.

Abstract:
We present five epochs of near IR observations of the protoplanetary disk around MWC 480 (HD31648) obtained with the SpeX spectrograph on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) between 2007 and 2013, inclusive. Using the measured line fluxes in the Pa beta and Br gamma lines, we found the mass accretion rates to be (1.43 - 2.61)x10^-8 Msun y^-1 and (1.81 - 2.41)x10^-8 Msun y^-1 respectively, bu…

We present five epochs of near IR observations of the protoplanetary disk around MWC 480 (HD31648) obtained with the SpeX spectrograph on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) between 2007 and 2013, inclusive. Using the measured line fluxes in the Pa beta and Br gamma lines, we found the mass accretion rates to be (1.43 - 2.61)x10^-8 Msun y^-1 and (1.81 - 2.41)x10^-8 Msun y^-1 respectively, but which varied by more than 50% from epoch to epoch. The spectral energy distribution (SED)reveals a variability of about 30% between 1.5 and 10 microns during this same period of time. We investigated the variability using of the continuum emission of the disk in using the Monte-Carlo Radiative Transfer Code (MCRT) HOCHUNK3D. We find that varying the height of the inner rim successfully produces a change in the NIR flux, but lowers the far IR emission to levels below all measured fluxes. Because the star exhibits bipolar flows, we utilized a structure that simulates an inner disk wind to model the variability in the near IR, without producing flux levels in the far IR that are inconsistent with existing data. For this object, variable near IR emission due to such an outflow is more consistent with the data than changing the scale height of the inner rim of the disk.
