We examine the production of the Hoyle and associated excited states from the viewpoint of pocket resonances in the reaction of an $α$-particle on a ground state prolate $^8$Be nucleus within the optical model coupled-channel framework. The predicted reaction cross sections, as a function of the center-of-mass energy $E_{\rm cm}$, show prominent resonances, including the Hoyle resonance. The positions and widths of these resonances are sensitive to the target deformation ($β_2$ parameter) and the parity of the nuclear surface potential $-$ deeper for the even-parity $L$ partial waves relative to those for the odd-parity $L$ partial waves at the surface region because of the Bose-Einstein exchange of the $α$-bosons. Decomposing the reaction cross sections to different partial waves, we find that the resonance energies and widths reasonably agree with the available experimental data and previous hyperspherical calculations for the $0_2^+$ (Hoyle state), $0_3^+$, $1_1^-$ and $3_1^-$ states of $^{12}$C, except for the narrow theoretical width of the $2_2^+$ state. Analyzing the wavefunctions and the resonance widths, we identify the narrow and sharp $0_2^+$, $3_1^-$ and $2_2^+$ resonances as pocket resonances -- resonances which occur below the potential barrier, while the broad $0_3^+$ and $1_1^-$ resonances as above-the-barrier resonances. For astrophysical applications, we also evaluate the astrophysical $S(E_{\rm cm})$-factor for $E_{\rm cm}$ $<$ 1.0 MeV, for the fusion of $α$+$^8$Be into the $^{12}$C$(2^+)$ state based on our estimated $s$-wave $α$+$^8$Be reaction cross section and the associated $γ$- and $α$-decay widths for the decay of $^{12}$C excited states in the potential pocket.

Background: The triple-alpha reaction is the key to our understanding about the nucleosynthesis and the observed abundance of $^{12}$C in stars. The theory of this process is well established at high temperatures but rather ambiguous in the low temperature regime where measurements are impossible. Purpose: Develop a new three-body method, which tackles properly the scattering boundary condition for three charged particles and takes into account both the resonant and the non-resonant reaction mechanisms on the same footing, to compute the triple-alpha reaction rate at low temperatures. Methods: We combine the R-matrix expansion, the R-matrix propagation method, and the screening technique in the hyperspherical harmonics basis. Results: Both the $2^+_1$ bound state and the $0^+_2$ resonant state in $^{12}$C are well reproduced. We also study the cluster structure of these states. We calculate the triple-alpha reaction rate for $\mathrm{T}=0.01-0.1$ GK. Conclusions: We obtain the same rate as NACRE for temperatures above 0.07 GK, but the new rate is largely enhanced at lower temperatures ($\approx 10^{12}$ at 0.02 GK). The differences are caused by the direct capture contribution to the reaction when three alpha particles can not reach the resonant energies.

A new full three-body method is introduced to compute the rate of the triple-alpha capture reaction which is the primary source of $^{12}$C in stars. In this work, we combine the Faddeev hyperspherical harmonics and the R-matrix method to obtain a full solution to the three-body $α+α+α$ continuum. Particular attention is paid to the long range effects caused by the pairwise Coulomb interactions. The new rate agrees with the NACRE rate for temperatures greater than 0.07 GK, but a large enhancement at lower temperature is found ($\approx 10^{14}$ at 0.02 GK). Our results are compared to previous calculations where additional approximations were made. We show that the new rate does not significantly change the evolution of stars around one solar mass. In particular, such stars still undergo a red-giant phase consistent with observations, and no significant differences are found in the final white dwarfs.

In an effort to better determine the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction rate, we have performed inclusive and exclusive measurements of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B. The former was a study of longitudinal momentum distributions of 7Be fragments emitted in the Coulomb breakup of intermediate energy 8B beams on Pb and Ag targets. Analysis of these data yielded the E2 contribution to the breakup cross section. In the exclusive measurement, we determined the cross section for the Coulomb breakup of 8B on Pb at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical S factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction. Interpreting the measurements with 1st-order perturbation theory, we obtained SE2/SE1 = 4.7 (+ 2.0,- 1.3) times 10^-4 at Erel = 0.6 MeV, and S17(0) = 17.8 (+ 1.4,- 1.2) eV b. Semiclassical 1st-order perturbation theory and fully quantum mechanical continuum-discretized coupled channels analyses yield nearly identical results for the E1 strength relevant to solar neutrino flux calculations, suggesting that theoretical reaction mechanism uncertainties need not limit the precision of Coulomb breakup determinations of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B S factor. A recommended value of S17(0) based on a weighted average of this and other measurements is presented.
