Abstract:
We report the discovery of a barium blue straggler star (BSS) in M67, exhibiting enhancements in slow neutron-capture ($s$-) process elements. Spectroscopic analysis of two BSSs (WOCS\,9005 \& WOCS\,1020) and 4 stars located near the main-sequence turn-off using GALAH spectra, showed that WOCS\,9005 has a significantly high abundance of the s-process elements ([Ba/Fe] = 0.75$\pm$0.08, [Y/Fe] = 1.0…

Spectroscopic analysis of two BSSs (WOCS\,9005 \& WOCS\,1020) and 4 stars located near the main-sequence turn-off using GALAH spectra, showed that WOCS\,9005 has a significantly high abundance of the s-process elements ([Ba/Fe] = 0.75$\pm$0.08, [Y/Fe] = 1.09$\pm$0.07, [La/Fe] = 0.65$\pm$0.06). The BSS (WOCS\,9005) is a spectroscopic binary with a known period, eccentricity and a suspected white dwarf (WD) companion with a kinematic mass of 0.5 M$_\odot$. The first `sighting' of the WD in this barium BSS is achieved through multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) with the crucial far-UV data from the UVIT/\textit{AstroSat}. The parameters of the hot and cool companions are derived using binary fits of the SED using two combinations of models, yielding a WD with T$_{eff}$ in the range 9750--15250 K. Considering the kinematic mass limit, the cooling age of the WD is estimated as $\sim$ 60 Myr. The observed enhancements are attributed to a mass transfer (MT) from a companion asymptotic giant branch star, now a WD. We estimate the accreted mass to be 0.15 M$_{\odot}$, through wind accretion, which increased the envelope mass from 0.45 M$_{\odot}$. The detection of chemical enhancement, as well as the sighting of WD in this system have been possible due to the recent MT in this binary, as suggested by the young WD.

Optical and near-IR photometry suggests that the carbon star DY Persei exhibits fadings similar to those of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) variables. Photometric surveys of the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds uncovered new DY Per variables with infrared photometry identifying them with cool carbon stars, perhaps, with an unusual tendency to shed mass. In an attempt to resolve DY Per's identity crisis -- a cool carbon giant or a cool RCB variable? -- we analyze a high-resolution H&K band spectrum of DY Per. The CO first-overtone bands in the K-band of DY Per show a high abundance of 18O such that 16O/18O = 4 +- 1, a ratio sharply at odds with published results for `regular' cool carbon giants with 16O/18O ~ 1000 but this exceptionally low ratio is characteristic of RCB-variables and HdC stars. This similarity suggests that DY Per indeed may be a cool RCB variable. Current opinion considers RCB-variables to result from merger of a He onto a CO white dwarf; observed abundances of these H-deficient stars including the exceptionally low 16O/18O ratios are in fair accord with predicted compositions for white dwarf merger products. A H-deficiency for DY Per is not directly observable but is suggested from the strength of a HF line and an assumption that F may be overabundant, as observed and predicted for RCB stars.

Surface abundances of 14 (11 majority class and 3 minority class) R Coronae Borealis stars (RCBs) along with the final flash object, V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's object) are revised based on their carbon abundances measured from the observed C2 bands; note that the earlier reported abundances were derived using an assumed carbon abundance due to the well known ``carbon problem''. The hot RCB MV Sgr is not subject to a carbon problem; it is remarkable to note that MV Sgr's carbon abundance lies in the range that is measured for the majority and minority class RCBs. The revised iron abundances for the RCBs are in the range log E(Fe)=3.8 to log E(Fe)=5.8 with the minority class RCB V854 Cen at lower end and the majority class RCB R CrB at the higher end of this range. Indications are that the revised RCBs' metallicity range is roughly consistent with the metal poor population contained within the bulge. The revised abundances of RCBs are then compared with extreme helium stars (EHes), the hotter relatives of RCBs. Clear differences are observed between RCBs and EHes in their metallicity distribution, carbon abundances, and the abundance trends observed for the key elements. These abundances are further discussed in the light of their formation scenarios.

We have detected CH$^{+}$ and CH molecular absorption lines from the young compact planetary nebula IC 4997 from high resolution optical spectra. A high-resolution infra-red (H and K bands) spectrum provides detection of H$_2$ emission lines amongst many other lines. The H$_2$ lines provide an excitation temperature of 2100 K which may result from UV fluorescence in the envelope or from shocks formed at the interface between an expanding outflow of ionized gas and the neutral envelope ejected when the star was on the AGB. It is suggested that the CH$^+$ may result from the endothermic reaction C + H$_2$ $\rightarrow$ CH$^+$ + H. Intriguingly, CH$^{+}$ and also CH show a higher expansion velocity than H$_{\rm 2}$ emission suggesting they may be part of the post-shocked gas.

High spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio optical spectra of red giants in the globular cluster Omega Centauri are analysed for stellar parameters and chemical abundances of 15 elements including helium by either line equivalent widths or synthetic spectrum analyses. The simultaneous abundance analysis of MgH and Mg lines adopting theoretical photospheres and a combination of He/H$-$ratios proved to be the only powerful probe to evaluate helium abundances of red giants cooler than 4400 K, wherein otherwise helium line transitions (He {\scs I} 10830 and 5876 Å) present for a direct spectral line analysis. The impact of helium-enhanced model photospheres on the resulting abundance ratios are smaller than 0.15 dex, in agreement with past studies. The first indirect spectroscopic helium abundances measured in this paper for the most metal-rich cluster members reveal the discovery of seven He-enhanced giants ($Δ$$Y=+$0.15$\pm$0.04), the largest such sample found spectroscopically to date. The average metallicity of $-$0.79$\pm$0.06 dex and abundances for O, Na, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Ni, Ba, and La are consistent with values found for the red giant branch (RGB-a) and subgiant branch (SGB-a) populations of Omega Centauri, suggesting an evolutionary connection among samples. The He-enhancement in giants is associated with larger $s$-process elemental abundances, which correlate with Al and anticorrelate with O. These results support the formation of He-enhanced, metal-rich population of Omega Centauri out of the interstellar medium enriched with the ejecta of fast rotating massive stars, binaries exploding as supernovae and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars.

High-resolution optical spectra were obtained in 2017-2019 with The Southern African Large Telescope of fifteen stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. Interstellar Ca ii H and K and Na i D lines are discussed in this paper. In particular, the line profiles are compared with profiles at a comparable spectral resolution obtained in 1993-1996 by Cha & Sembach. Ten of the lines of sight show changes to one or more of the components in that line of sight. Changes include small changes (1-2 km/s) in radial velocity and/or increases/decreases in equivalent width over the two decades between the periods of observation. Changes are more obvious in the Ca K line than in the Na D lines. These changes are attributed to gas disturbed by interactions between the supernova ejecta and the surrounding interstellar medium. A representative timescale may be 20-50 years. Small-scale variations in line profiles across the face of the remnant suggest, as previously remarked, that a linear scale for interactions is a small fraction of the 40 pc size of the present remnant.

Sodium is enriched in the giants relative to the abundance expected of main sequence stars of the same metallicity. This enrichment of [Na/Fe] by about $+0.25$ attributed to the first dredge-up is discussed in the light of theoretical predictions and recently published abundance determinations. Abundance ratios [El/Fe] for other elements are with very few exceptions equal to those of field giants and dwarfs, i.e., [El/Fe] $\simeq 0.00$ for [Fe/H] $\sim 0.0$. An exception is the overabundance of La, Ce, Nd and Sm in NGC 6991 but this is consistent with our previous demonstration that the abundances of these $s$-process products vary by about $\pm0.2$ among clusters of the same [Fe/H], a variation found also among field giants and dwarfs.

Several abundance analyses of Galactic open clusters (OCs) have shown a tendency for Ba but not for other heavy elements (La$-$Sm) to increase sharply with decreasing age such that Ba was claimed to reach [Ba/Fe] $\simeq +0.6$ in the youngest clusters (ages $<$ 100 Myr) rising from [Ba/Fe]$=0.00$ dex in solar-age clusters. Within the formulation of the $s$-process, the difficulty to replicate higher Ba abundance and normal La$-$Sm abundances in young clusters is known as {\it the barium puzzle}. Here, we investigate the barium puzzle using extremely high-resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra of 24 solar twins and measured the heavy elements Ba, La, Ce, Nd and Sm with a precision of 0.03 dex. We demonstrate that the enhanced Ba {\scs II} relative to La$-$Sm seen among solar twins, stellar associations and OCs at young ages ($<$100 Myr) is unrelated to aspects of stellar nucleosynthesis but has resulted from overestimation of Ba by standard methods of LTE abundance analysis in which the microturbulence derived from the Fe lines formed deep in the photosphere is insufficient to represent the true line broadening imposed on Ba {\scs II} lines by the upper photospheric layers from where the Ba {\scs II} lines emerge. As the young stars have relatively active photospheres, Ba overabundances most likely result from the adoption of too low a value of microturbulence in the spectum synthesis of the strong Ba {\scs II} lines but the change of microturbulence in the upper photosphere has only a minor affect on La$-$Sm abundances measured from the weak lines.

In a survey conducted between 2011-12 of interstellar Na I D line profiles in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant, a few lines of sight showed dramatic changes in low velocity absorption components with respect to profiles from 1993-1994 reported by Cha & Sembach. Three stars - HD 63578, HD 68217 and HD 76161 showed large decrease in strength over the 1993-2012 interval. HD 68217 and HD 76161 are associated with the Vela SNR whereas HD 63578 is associated with $γ^2$ Velorum wind bubble. Here, we present high spectral resolution observations of Ca II K lines obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) towards these three stars along with simultaneous observations of Na I D lines. These new spectra confirm that the Na D interstellar absorption weakened drastically between 1993-1994 and 2011-2012 but show for the first time that the Ca II K line is unchanged between 1993-1994 and 2015. This remarkable contrast between the behaviour of Na D and Ca II K line absorption lines is a puzzle concerning gas presumably affected by the outflow from the SNR and the wind from $γ^2$ Velorum.

We have collected high-dispersion echelle spectra of red giant members in the twelve open clusters (OCs) and derived stellar parameters and chemical abundances for 26 species by either line equivalent widths or synthetic spectrum analyses. We confirm the lack of an age-metallicity relation for OCs but argue that such a lack of trend for OCs arise from the limited coverage in metallicity compared to that of field stars which span a wide range in metallicity and age. We confirm that the radial metallicity gradient of OCs is steeper (flatter) for Rgc < 12 kpc (> 12 kpc). We demonstrate that the sample of clusters constituting a steep radial metallicity gradient of slope $-$0.052$\pm$0.011 dex kpc$^{-1}$ at Rgc < 12 kpc are younger than 1.5 Gyr and located close to the Galactic midplane (|z| < 0.5 kpc) with kinematics typical of the thin disc. Whereas the clusters describing a shallow slope of $-$0.015$\pm$0.007 dex kpc$^{-1}$ at Rgc > 12 kpc are relatively old, thick disc members with a striking spread in age and height above the midplane (0.5 < |z| < 2.5 kpc). Our investigation reveals that the OCs and field stars yield consistent radial metallicity gradients if the comparison is limited to samples drawn from the similar vertical heights. We argue via the computation of Galactic orbits that all the outer disc clusters were actually born inward of 12 kpc but the orbital eccentricity has taken them to present locations very far from their birthplaces.

Determinations of the chemical composition of red giants in a large sample of open clusters show that the abundances of the heavy elements La, Ce, Nd and Sm but not so obviously Y and Eu vary from one cluster to another across a sample all having about the solar metallicity. For La, Ce, Nd and Sm the amplitudes of the variations at solar metallicity scale approximately with the main s-process contribution to solar system material. Consideration of published abundances of field stars suggest that such a spread in heavy element abundances is present for the thin and thick disk stars of different metallicity. This new result provides an opportunity to chemically tag stars by their heavy elements and to reconstruct dissolved open clusters from the field star population.

Aims: We report the discovery of a young lithium rich giant, HD 16771, in the core-helium burning phase that does not seem to fit existing proposals of Li synthesis near the luminosity function bump or during He-core flash. We aim to understand the nature of Li enrichment in the atmosphere of HD 16771 by exploring various Li enhancement scenarios. Methods: We have collected high-resolution echelle spectra of HD 16771 and derived stellar parameters and chemical abundances for 27 elements by either line equivalent widths or synthetic spectrum analyses. Results: HD 16771 is a Li-rich (log(n(Li))=+2.67+/-0.10 dex) intermediate mass giant star (M=2.4+/-0.1 Msun) with age=0.76+/-0.13 Gyr and located at the red giant clump. Kinematics and chemical compositions are consistent with HD 16771 being a member of the Galactic thin disk population. The non-detection of 6Li(< 3%), a low carbon isotopic ratio (12C/13C=12+/-2), and the slow rotation (vsini=2.8 km/s) all suggest that lithium might have been synthesized in this star. On the contrary, HD 16771 with a mass of 2.4 Msun has no chance of encountering luminosity function bump and He-core flash where the possibility of fast deep-mixing for Li enrichment in K giants has been suggested previously. Conclusions: Based of the evolutionary status of this star, we discuss the possibility that 7Li synthesis in HD 16771 is triggered by the engulfment of close-in planet(s) during the RGB phase.

We have observed high-dispersion echelle spectra of main-sequence stars in five nearby young associations -- Argus, Carina-Near, Hercules-Lyra, Orion and Subgroup B4 -- and derived abundances for elements ranging from Na to Eu. These are the first chemical abundance measurements for two of the five associations, while the remaining three associations are analysed more extensively in our study. Our results support the presence of chemical homogeneity among association members with a typical star-to-star abundance scatter of about 0.06 dex or less over many elements. The five associations show log$ε$(Li) consistent with their age and share a solar chemical composition for all elements with the exception of Ba. We find that all the heavy elements (Y, Zr, La, Ce, Nd, Sm and Eu) exhibit solar ratios, i.e., [X/Fe] $\simeq$ 0, while Ba is overabundant by about 0.2-0.3 dex. The origin of the overabundance of Ba is a puzzle. Within the formulation of the s-process, it is difficult to create a higher Ba abundance without a similar increase in the s-process contributions to other heavy elements (La-Sm). Given that Ba is represented by strong lines of Ba II and La-Sm are represented by rather weak ionized lines, the suggestion, as previously made by other studies, is that the Ba abundance may be systematically overestimated by standard methods of abundance analysis perhaps because the upper reaches of the stellar atmospheres are poorly represented by standard model atmospheres. A novel attempt to analyse the Ba I line at 5535 Å gives a solar Ba abundance for stars with effective temperatures hotter than about 5800 K but increasingly subsolar Ba abundances for cooler stars with apparent Ba deficiencies of 0.5 dex at 5100 K. This trend with temperature may signal a serious non-LTE effect on the Ba I line.

With this homogeneous sample of open clusters, we study the relative elemental abundances of stars in open clusters in comparison with field stars as a function of age and metallicity. We find a range of mild enrichment of heavy (Ba-Eu) elements in young open cluster giants over field stars of the same metallicity. Our analysis succinct that the youngest stellar generations in cluster might be under-represented by the solar neighbourhood field stars.

The spread in temperatures and gravities being very small among the red giants, nearly the same stellar lines were employed for all stars thereby reducing the abundance errors: the errors of the average abundance for a cluster were generally in the 0.02 to 0.05 dex range. Our present sample covers Galactocentric distances of 8.3 to 11.3 kpc and an age range of 0.2 to 4.3 Gyr.
