Nuclear isomers play a key role in the creation of the elements in the universe and have a number of fascinating potential applications related to the controlled release of nuclear energy on demand. Particularly, $^{93m}$Mo isomer is a good candidate for studying the depletion of nuclear isomer via nuclear excitation by electron capture. For such purposes, efficient approach for $^{93m}$Mo production needs to be explored. In the present work, we demonstrate experimentally an efficient production of $^{93m}$Mo through $^{93}$Nb(p, n) reaction induced by intense laser pulse. When a ps-duration, 100-J laser pulse is employed, the $^{93m}$Mo isomer at 2425 keV (21/2$^+$, $T_{1/2}$ = 6.85 h) are generated with a high yield of $1.8\times10^6$ particles/shot. The resulting peak efficiency is expected to be $10^{17}$ particles/s, which is at least five orders of magnitudes higher than using classical proton accelerator. The effects of production and destruction of $^{93m}$Mo on the controversial astrophysical p-isotope $^{92}$Mo are studied. It is found that the $^{93}$Nb(p, n)-$^{93m}$Mo reaction is an important production path for ^{93m}Mo seed nucleus, and the influence of ^{93m}Mo-^{92}Mo reaction flow on ^{92}Mo production cannot be ignored. In addition, we propose to directly measure the astrophysical rate of (p, n) reaction using laser-induced proton beam since the latter one fits the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution well. We conclude that laser-induced proton beam opens a new path to produce nuclear isomers with high peak efficiency towards the understanding of p-nuclei nucleosythesis.

We have investigated the optical spectral behavior of a large sample of Fermi blazars (40 FSRQs and 13 BL Lacs), and found two new universal optical spectral behaviors. In the low state the optical spectrum gradually becomes softer (steeper) or harder (flatter) but more and more slowly when the brightness increases, and then tends to stable in the high state, which are briefly named the redder-stable-when-brighter (RSWB) and bluer-stable-when-brighter (BSWB) behaviors, respectively. 34 FSRQs and 7 BL Lacs exhibit clear RSWB behavior, and 2 FSRQs and 5 BL Lacs show distinct BSWB behavior, which mean that FSRQs favor more RSWB than BSWB behavior, while BL Lacs have no clear preference among both behaviors. We have put forward a unified nonlinear formula to quantitatively characterize the optical spectral behaviors of FSRQs and BL Lacs, which can fit both kinds of behaviors very well. We argue that the RSWB and BSWB behaviors originate from the same mechanism, and they are the universal optical spectral behaviors for blazars. The frequently observed redder-when-brighter (RWB) and bluer-when-brighter (BWB) trends can be considered to be the approximations of the behaviors of RSWB and BSWB, respectively. The rarely observed stable-when-brighter (SWB) trend can also be viewed as an approximation or a special case of the RSWB or BSWB behavior. We have developed a model with two constant-spectral-index components which can not only explain well both two kinds of optical spectral behaviors, but also successfully interpret the differential behaviors between FSRQs and BL Lacs.

Major elements such as Fe, Ti, Mg, Al, Ca, and Si play very important roles in understanding the origin and evolution of the Moon. Previous maps of these major elements derived from orbital data are based on mosaic images or low-resolution Gamma ray data. The hue variations and gaps among orbital boundaries in the mosaic images are not conducive to geological studies. This paper aims to produce seamless and homogenous distribution maps of major elements using the single-exposure image of the whole lunar disk obtained by China's high-resolution geostationary satellite, Gaofen-4, with a spatial resolution of ~500 m. The elemental contents of soil samples returned by Apollo and Luna missions were used as ground truth, and were correlated with the reflectance of the sampling sites extracted from Gaofen-4 data. The final distribution maps of these major oxides are generated with the statistical regression model. With these products the average contents and proportions of the major elements for maria and highlands were estimated and compared. The results showed that SiO2 and TiO2 have the highest and lowest fractions in mare and highland areas, respectively. Besides, the relative concentrations of these elements could serve as indicators of geologic processes, e.g., the obviously asymmetric distributions of Al2O3, CaO, and SiO2 around Tycho crater may suggest that Tycho crater was formed by an oblique impact from the southwest direction.

The Moon's optical characteristics in visible and long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) have long been observed with our eyes or with instruments. What the mid-infrared (MIR) Moon looks like is still a mystery. For the first time we present detailed appearance of the MIR Moon observed by a high-resolution geostationary satellite and reveal the essence behind its appearance. The appearance of the MIR Moon is opposite to its normal visible appearance. In addition the MIR Moon shows limb darkening. Both the absolute and the relative brightness distribution of the MIR lunar disk changes with the solar incidence angle. The signatures of the MIR Moon are controlled by both the reflection and emission of the lunar surface. We also show first-ever brightness temperature maps of the lunar disk without needing a mosaic, which better show the temperature variation across the lunar disk. They reveal that the relationship between brightness temperature and solar incidence angle i is cos1/bi, and the power parameter is smaller than the Lambertian temperature model of cos1/4i observed for lunar orbit-based measurements. The slower decrease of the brightness temperature when moving away from the sub-solar point than the Lambertian model is due to topographic effects. The brightness temperature is dominated by albedo and the solar incidence angle and influenced by the topography. Our results indicate that the Moon in the MIR exhibits many interesting phenomena which were previously unknown, and contains abundant information about lunar reflection and thermal emission for future study.

We review progress that has been made in utilizing one form of Direct Statistical Simulation (DSS) to describe geophysical and astrophysical flows that are anisotropic and inhomogeneous. We first explain the approach, which is based upon a systematic and conservative expansion of the equations of motion for low-order equal-time cumulants. We place the method into context with other statistical procedures. Truncation at second order in the hierarchy of cumulants is equivalent to retaining the interaction between zonal mean flows and eddies. Eddy-eddy interactions appear at higher orders, but care must be taken to keep the higher-order expansions realizable with non-negative probability distribution functions. The strengths and weaknesses of different levels of approximation are assessed with numerical experiments on the fiducial problem of a stochastically forced jet on a spherical surface. The results give an insight into the mechanisms that may control jet spacing and strength, and indicate interesting avenues for future research.
