We report the development of a 4-color simultaneous camera for the 1.52~m Telescopio Carlos Sánchez (TCS) in the Teide Observatory, Canaries, Spain. We report the development of a 4-color simultaneous camera for the 1.52~m Telescopio Carlos Sánchez (TCS) in the Teide Observatory, Canaries, Spain. The new instrument, named MuSCAT2, has a capability of 4-color simultaneous imaging in $g$ (400--550 nm), $r$ (550--700 nm), $i$ (700--820 nm), and $z_s$ (820--920 nm) bands. MuSCAT2 equips four 1024$\times$1024 pixel CCDs, having a field of view of 7.4$\times$7.4 arcmin$^2$ with a pixel scale of 0.44 arcsec per pixel. The principal purpose of MuSCAT2 is to perform high-precision multi-color exoplanet transit photometry. We have demonstrated photometric precisions of 0.057%, 0.050%, 0.060%, and 0.076% as root-mean-square residuals of 60~s binning in $g$, $r$, $i$ and $z_s$ bands, respectively, for a G0 V star WASP-12 ($V=11.57\pm0.16$). MuSCAT2 has started science operations since January 2018, with over 250 telescope nights per year. MuSCAT2 is expected to become a reference tool for exoplanet transit observations, and will substantially contribute to the follow-up of the TESS and PLATO space missions.

The highest resolution images ever taken in the visible were obtained by combining Lucky Imaging and low order adaptive optics. This paper describes a new instrument to be deployed on the WHT 4.2m and GTC 10.4 m telescopes on La Palma, with particular emphasis on the optical design and the expected system performance. A new design of low order wavefront sensor using photon counting CCD detectors and multi-plane curvature wavefront sensor will allow dramatically fainter reference stars to be used, allowing virtually full sky coverage with a natural guide star. This paper also describes a significant improvements in the efficiency of Lucky Imaging, important advances in wavefront reconstruction with curvature sensors and the results of simulations and sensitivity limits. With a 2 x 2 array of 1024 x 1024 photon counting EMCCDs, AOLI is likely to be the first of the new class of high sensitivity, near diffraction limited imaging systems giving higher resolution in the visible from the ground than hitherto been possible from space.

The Adaptive Optics Lucky Imager (AOLI) is a new instrument under development to demonstrate near diffraction limited imaging in the visible on large ground-based telescopes. We present the adaptive optics system being designed for the instrument comprising a large stroke deformable mirror, fixed component non-linear curvature wavefront sensor and photon-counting EMCCD detectors. We describe the optical design of the wavefront sensor where two photoncounting CCDs provide a total of four reference images. Simulations of the optical characteristics of the system are discussed, with their relevance to low and high order AO systems. The development and optimisation of high-speed wavefront reconstruction algorithms are presented. Finally we discuss the results of simulations to demonstrate the sensitivity of the system.

The archive of seminars and talks given at the Instituto de Astrofiísica de Canarias goes back to 2008. Over 360 talks and seminars are now freely available by streaming over the int…

We present IACTalks, a free and open access seminars archive (http://iactalks.iac.es) aimed at promoting astronomy and the exchange of ideas by providing high-quality scientific seminars to the astronomical community. The archive of seminars and talks given at the Instituto de Astrofiísica de Canarias goes back to 2008. Over 360 talks and seminars are now freely available by streaming over the internet. We describe the user interface, which includes two video streams, one showing the speaker, the other the presentation. A search function is available, and seminars are indexed by keywords and in some cases by series, such as special training courses or the 2011 Winter School of Astrophysics, on secular evolution of galaxies. The archive is made available as an open resource, to be used by scientists and the public.

Blue not brown: UKIDSS T dwarfs with suppressed K-band flux

We have used blue near-infrared colours to select a group of 12 spectroscopically-confirmed UKIDSS T dwarfs later than T4. From amongst these we identify the first two kinematic halo T-dwarf candidates. Blue near-infrared colours have been attributed to collisionally-induced hydrogen absorption, which is enhanced by either high surface gravity or low metallicity. Proper motions are measured and di…

We have used blue near-infrared colours to select a group of 12 spectroscopically-confirmed UKIDSS T dwarfs later than T4. From amongst these we identify the first two kinematic halo T-dwarf candidates. Blue near-infrared colours have been attributed to collisionally-induced hydrogen absorption, which is enhanced by either high surface gravity or low metallicity. Proper motions are measured and distances estimated, allowing the determination of tangential velocities. U and V components are estimated for our objects by assuming radial velocity = 0 km/s. From this, ULAS J0926+0835 is found to have U=62 km/s and V=-140km/s and ULAS J1319+1209 is found to have U=192 km/s and V=-92 km/s. These values are consistent with potential halo membership. However, these are not the bluest objects in our selection. The bluest is ULAS J1233+1219, with J-K=-1.16 +/- 0.07, and surprisingly this object is found to have young disc-like U and V. Our sample also contains Hip 73786B, companion to the metal-poor K5 dwarf Hip 73786. Hip 73786 is a metal-poor star, with [Fe/H]=-0.3 and is located at a distance of 19 pc. U, V, W space velocity components are calculated for Hip 73786A and B, finding that U=-48 +/- 7 km/s, V=-75 +/- 4 km/s and W=-44 +/- 8 km/s. From the properties of the primary, Hip 73786B is found to be at least 1.6 Gyr old. As a metal poor object, Hip 73786B represents an important addition to the sample of known T dwarf benchmarks.
