We have used a combined sample of JADES and CEERS objects in order to constrain ionizing photon production efficiency ($ξ_{\rm ion}$) from JWST/NIRSpec and JWST/NIRCam data. We examine 163 objects at 1.06 < z < 6.71 with significant (3$σ$) spectroscopic detections of H$α$ and H$β$ in order to constrain intrinsic H$α$ luminosities corrected from nebular dust attenuation via Balmer decrements. We constrain dust-corrected UV luminosities from best-fit spectral-energy distribution modeling. We find a sample median log$_{10}$($ξ{\rm ion,0}$/erg Hz$^{-1}$) = $25.29^{+0.29}_{-0.37}$, assuming f$_{\rm esc}$=0 for the escape fraction of Lyman continuum emission. We find significant correlation between $ξ_{\rm ion,0}$ and z, with 17 objects at z > 4.64 having median log$_{10}$($ξ_{\rm ion,0}$/erg Hz$^{-1}$) = $25.38^{+0.38}){-0.38}$, with those below having log$_{10}$($ξ_{\rm ion,0}$/erg Hz$^{-1}$) = $25.24^{+0.30}_{-0.33}$. We also find significant, positive correlations between $ξ_{\rm ion,0}$ and LUV; Wλ([O iii]); [O iii]λ5007/[O ii]λλ3726, 3729; and inverse correlations with metallicity. In contrast with some previous results, we find no trends between $ξ_{\rm ion,0}$ and stellar mass, stellar dust attenuation, or UV slope. Applying a multivariate fit to $ξ_{\rm ion,0}$, z, and MUV to an empirically-motivated model of reionization, and folding in f$_{\rm esc}$ estimates from direct observations of the Lyman continuum at z ~ 3 from the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic survey, we find that the number of ionizing photons entering the IGM causes reionization to end at z ~ 5 - 7.

We present results on the emission-line properties of z=1.4-7.5 star-forming galaxies in the Assembly of Ultradeep Rest-optical Observations Revealing Astrophysics (AURORA) Cycle 1 JWST/NIRSpec program. Based on its depth, continuous wavelength coverage from 1--5 microns, and medium spectral resolution (R~1000), AURORA includes detections of a large suite of nebular emission lines spanning a broad range in rest wavelength. We investigate the locations of AURORA galaxies in multiple different emission-line diagrams, including traditional "BPT" diagrams of [OIII]/Hbeta vs. [NII]/Halpha, [SII]/Halpha, and [OI]/Halpha, and the "ionization-metallicity" diagram of [OIII]/[OII] (O32) vs. ([OIII]+[OII])/Hbeta (R23). We also consider a bluer rest-frame "ionization-metallicity" diagram introduced recently to characterize z>10 galaxies: [NeIII]/[OII] vs. ([NeIII]+[OII])/Hdelta; as well as longer-wavelength diagnostic diagrams extending into the rest-frame near-IR: [OIII]/Hbeta vs. [SIII]/[SII] (S32); and HeI/Pagamma and [SIII]/Pagamma vs. [FeII]/Pabeta. With a significant boost in signal-to-noise and large, representative samples of individual galaxy detections, the AURORA emission-line diagrams presented here definitively confirm a physical picture in which chemically-young, alpha-enhanced, massive stars photoionize the ISM in distant galaxies with a harder ionizing spectrum at fixed nebular metallicity than in their z~0 counterparts. We also uncover previously unseen evolution prior to z~2 in the [OIII]/Hbeta vs. [NII]/Halpha diagram, which motivates deep NIRSpec observations at even higher redshift. Finally, we present the first statistical sample of rest-frame near-IR emission-line diagnostics in star-forming galaxies at high redshift. In order to truly interpret rest-frame near-IR line ratios including [FeII], we must obtain better constraints on dust depletion in the high-redshift ISM.

We investigate the multi-phase structure of gas flows in galaxies. We study 80 galaxies during the epoch of peak star formation ($1.4\leq z\leq2.7$) using data from Keck/LRIS and VLT/KMOS. Our analysis provides a simultaneous probe of outflows using UV emission and absorption features and H$α$ emission. With this unprecedented data set, we examine the properties of gas flows estimated from LRIS and KMOS in relation to other galaxy properties, such as star formation rate (SFR), star formation rate surface density ($Σ_{\rm SFR}$), stellar mass (M$_*$), and main sequence offset ($Δ$MS). We find no strong correlations between outflow velocity measured from rest-UV lines and galaxy properties. However, we find that galaxies with detected outflows show higher averages in SFR, $Σ_{\rm SFR}$, and $Δ$MS than those lacking outflow detections, indicating a connection between outflow and galaxy properties. Furthermore, we find a lower average outflow velocity than previously reported, suggesting greater absorption at the systemic redshift of the galaxy. Finally, we detect outflows in 49% of our LRIS sample and 30% in the KMOS sample, and find no significant correlation between outflow detection and inclination. These results may indicate that outflows are not collimated and that H$α$ outflows have a lower covering fraction than low-ionization interstellar absorption lines. Additionally, these tracers may be sensitive to different physical scales of outflow activity. A larger sample size with a wider dynamic range in galaxy properties is needed to further test this picture.

While the shape of the Ly$α$ profile is viewed as one of the best tracers of ionizing-photon escape fraction ($f_{esc}$) within low redshift (z~0.3) surveys of the Lyman continuum, this connection remains untested at high redshift. Here, we combine deep, rest-UV Keck/LRIS spectra of 80 objects from the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey with rest-optical Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopy in order to examine potential correlations between Ly$α$ profile shape and the escape of ionizing radiation within z~3 star-forming galaxies. We measure the velocity separation between double-peaked Ly$α$ emission structure (v$_{\rm sep}$), between red-side Ly$α$ emission peaks and systemic (v$_{\rm Lyα,red}$), and between red-side emission peaks and low-ionization interstellar absorption lines (v$_{\rm Lyα-LIS}$). We find that the IGM-corrected ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing flux density is significantly higher in KLCS objects with lower v$_{\rm Lyα,red}$. We find no significant trend between measures of ionizing-photon escape and v$_{\rm Lyα-LIS}$. We compare our results to measurements of z~0.3 "Green Peas" from the literature and find that KLCS objects have larger v$_{\rm sep}$ at fixed v$_{\rm Lyα,red}$, larger $f_{esc}$ at fixed v$_{\rm Lyα,red}$, and higher v$_{\rm Lyα,red}$ overall than z~0.3 analogs. We conclude that the Ly$α$ profile shapes of our high-redshift sources are fundamentally different, and that measurements of profile shape such as v$_{\rm Lyα,red}$ map on to $f_{esc}$ in different ways. We caution against building reionization-era $f_{esc}$ diagnostics based purely on Ly$α$ profiles of low-redshift dwarf galaxies. Tracing v$_{\rm sep}$, v$_{\rm Lyα,red}$, and $f_{esc}$ in a larger sample of z~3 galaxies will reveal how these variables may be connected for galaxies at the epoch of reionization.

The connection between the escape fraction of ionizing radiation ($f_{esc}$) and the properties of galaxies, such as stellar mass (M*), age, star-formation rate (SFR), and dust content, are key inputs for reionization models, but many of these relationships remain untested at high redshift. We present an analysis of a sample of 96 z~3 galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey (KLCS). These galaxies have both sensitive Keck/LRIS spectroscopic measurements of the Lyman continuum (LyC) region, and multi-band photometry that places constraints on stellar population parameters. We construct composite spectra from subsamples binned as a function of galaxy property and quantify the ionizing-photon escape for each composite. We find a significant anti-correlation between $f_{esc}$ and M*, consistent with predictions from cosmological zoom-in simulations. We also find significant anti-correlation between $f_{esc}$ and E(B-V), encoding the underlying physics of LyC escape in our sample. We also find no significant correlation between $f_{esc}$ and either stellar age or specific SFR (=SFR/M*), challenging interpretations that synchronize recent star formation and favorable conditions for ionizing escape. The galaxy properties now shown to correlate with $f_{esc}$ in the KLCS are Ly$α$ equivalent width, UV Luminosity, M*, SFR, and E(B-V), but not age or sSFR. To date, this is the most comprehensive analysis of galaxy properties and LyC escape at high redshift, and will be used to guide future models and observations of the reionization epoch.

The connection between the escape fraction of ionizing photons ($f_{\rm esc}$) and star-formation rate surface density ($Σ_{\rm SFR}$) is a key input for reionization models, but remains untested at high redshift. We analyse 35 z~3 galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Survey (KLCS) covered by deep, rest far-UV spectra of the Lyman continuum (LyC) and high-resolution HST V$_{606}$ imaging, enabling estimates of both $f_{\rm esc}$ and rest-UV sizes. Using Sérsic profile fits to HST images and spectral-energy distribution fits to multi-band photometry, we measure effective sizes and star-formation rates for the galaxies in our sample, and separate the sample into two bins of $Σ_{\rm SFR}$. Based on composite spectra, we estimate <$f_{\rm esc}$> for both $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ subsamples, finding no significant difference in <$f_{\rm esc}$> between the two. To test the representativeness of the KLCS HST sample and the robustness of this result, we attempt to recover the well-established correlation between $f_{\rm esc}$ and Ly$α$ equivalent width. This correlation is not significant within the KLCS HST sample, indicating that the sample is not sufficient for correlating $f_{\rm esc}$ and galaxy properties such as $Σ_{\rm SFR}$. We perform stacking simulations using the KLCS parent sample to determine the optimal sample size for robust probes of the $f_{\rm esc}$-$Σ_{\rm SFR}$ connection to inform future HST LyC observing programs. For a program with a selection independent of ionizing properties, >= 90 objects are required; for one preferentially observing strongly-leaking LyC sources, >= 58 objects are required. More generally, measuring the connection between $f_{\rm esc}$ and $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ requires a larger, representative sample spanning a wide dynamic range in galaxies properties such as $Σ_{\rm SFR}$.

We present the first statistical analysis of kinematically-resolved, spatially-extended Ly$α$ emission around $z = 2-3$ galaxies in the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). Our sample of 59 star-forming galaxies ($z_\mathrm{med} = 2.29$) comprises the subset with typical KCWI integration times of ~5 hours and with existing imaging data from the Hubble Space Telescope and/or adaptive optics-assisted integral field spectroscopy. The high resolution images were used to evaluate the azimuthal dependence of the diffuse Ly$α$ emission with respect to the stellar continuum within projected galactocentric distances of $\lesssim 30$ proper kpc. We introduce cylindrically-projected 2D spectra (CP2D) that map the averaged Ly$α$ spectral profile over a specified range of azimuthal angle, as a function of impact parameter around galaxies. The averaged CP2D spectrum of all galaxies shows clear signatures of Ly$α$ resonant scattering by outflowing gas. We stacked the CP2D spectra of individual galaxies over ranges of azimuthal angle with respect to their major axes. The extended Ly$α$ emission along the galaxy principal axes are statistically indistinguishable, with residual asymmetry of $\le$ 2% ($\sim 2 σ$) of the integrated Ly$α$ emission. The symmetry implies that the Ly$α$ scattering medium is dominated by outflows in all directions within 30 kpc. Meanwhile, we find that the blueshifted component of Ly$α$ emission is marginally stronger along galaxy minor axes for galaxies with relatively weak Ly$α$ emission. We speculate that this weak directional dependence of Ly$α$ emission becomes discernible only when the Ly$α$ escape fraction is low. These discoveries highlight the need for similar analyses in simulations with Ly$α$ radiative transfer modeling.

Observations of reionization-era analogs at $z\sim3$ are a powerful tool for constraining reionization. Rest-ultraviolet observations are particularly useful, in which both direct and indirect tracers of ionizing-photon production and escape can be observed. We analyse a sample of 124 $z\sim3$ galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey, with sensitive spectroscopic measurements of the Lyman continuum (LyC) region. We present a method of removing foreground contamination from our sample using high-resolution, multiband Hubble Space Telescope imaging. We re-measure the global properties of the cleaned sample of 13 individually-detected LyC sources and 107 individually-undetected sources, including a sample-averaged absolute escape fraction of $f_{esc,abs}=0.06\pm0.01$ and a sample-averaged ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing ultraviolet flux density of $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}=0.040\pm0.006$, corrected for attenuation from the intergalactic and circumgalactic media. Based on composite spectra, we also recover a strong positive correlation between $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}$ and Ly$α$ equivalent width (W$_λ$(Ly$α$)) and a negative correlation between $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}$ and UV luminosity. As in previous work, we interpret the relationship between $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}$ and W$_λ$(Ly$α$) in terms of the modulation of the escape of ionizing radiation from star-forming galaxies based on the covering fraction of neutral gas. We also use a W$_λ$(Ly$α$)-weighted $<f_{900}/f_{1500}>_{out}$ to estimate an ionizing emissivity from star-forming galaxies at $z\sim3$ as $ε_{\rm LyC}\simeq5.5\times10^{24}$erg s$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-3}$. This estimate, evaluated using the uncontaminated sample of this work, affirms that the contribution of galaxies to the ionizing background at $z\sim3$ is comparable to that of active galactic nuclei.

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the redshift evolution of the rest-UV spectra of star-forming galaxies out to z~5. We combine new z~5 measurements of HI Ly$α$ and low- and high-ionization interstellar metal absorption features with comparable measurements at z~2-4. We measure the equivalent widths of interstellar absorption features using stacked spectra in bins of Ly$α$ equivalent width, performing corrections to Ly$α$ strengths based on a model for the transmission of the intergalactic medium. We find a strong correlation between decreasing low-ionization absorption strength and increasing Ly$α$ emission strength over the redshift range z~2-5, suggesting that both of these quantities are fundamentally linked to neutral gas covering fraction. At the highest Ly$α$ equivalent widths, we observe evolution at $z\sim5$ towards greater Ly$α$ emission strength at fixed low-ionization absorption strength. If we interpret the non-evolving relationship of Ly$α$ emission strength and low-ionization line strength at z~2-4 as primarily reflecting the radiative transfer of Ly$α$ photons, this evolution at z~5 suggests a higher intrinsic production rate of Ly$α$ photons than at lower redshift. Our conclusion is supported by the joint evolution of the relationships among Ly$α$ emission strength, interstellar absorption strength, and dust reddening. We perform additional analysis in bins of stellar mass, star-formation rate, UV luminosity, and age, examining how the relationships between galaxy properties and Ly$α$ emission evolve towards higher redshift. We conclude that increasing intrinsic Ly$α$ photon production and strong detection of nebular CIV emission (signaling lower metallicity) at z~5 indicate an elevated ionized photon production efficiency ($ξ_{\rm ion}$).

To date no direct detection of Lyman continuum emission has been measured for intermediate--redshift z~1 star-forming galaxies . We combine HST grism spectroscopy with GALEX UV and ground--based optical imaging to extend the search for escaping Lyman continuum to a large (~600) sample of z~1 low-mass, moderately star-forming galaxies selected initially on H$α$ emission. The characteristic escape fraction of LyC from SFGs that populate this parameter space remains weakly constrained by previous surveys, but these faint SFGs are assumed to play a significant role in the reionization of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshift (z>6). We do not make an unambiguous detection of escaping LyC radiation from this $z\sim1$ sample, individual non--detections to constrain the absolute Lyman continuum escape fraction, $f_{esc}$<2.1% (3$σ$). We measure upper limits of $f_{esc}$<9.6% from a sample of SFGs selected on high H$α$ equivalent width (EW>200Å), which are thought to be close analogs of high redshift sources of reionization. For reference, we also present an emissivity--weighted escape fraction which is useful as a measurement of the general contribution of the SFGs to the z~1 ionizing UV background. In the discussion, we consider the implications of these intermediate redshift constraints for the reionization of hydrogen in the intergalactic medium at high (z > 6) redshift. If we assume our $z\sim1$ SFGs, for which we measure this emissivity-weighted $f_{esc}$, are analogs to the high redshift sources of reionization, we find is difficult reconcile reionization by faint (M$_{UV}<-13$) SFGs with a low escape fraction ($f_{esc}<$3%), with constraints from independent high redshift observations. If $f_{esc}$ evolves with redshift, reionization by SFGs may be consistent with observations from Planck.
