Astroaccesible is an outreach project hosted by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía - CSIC aimed at the teaching and popularisation of the astronomy among all publics independently of their capabilities and abilities, paying special attention to the collective of blind and visually impaired (BVI). Among the different strategies and resources using in our project, we have developed new 3D models representing in relief some of the stars, constellations and deep sky objects that can be observed during night from the Northern hemisphere in spring and summer. These models can be used by BVI to transmit to them the spatial configuration of the sky during night, but can be also used as an additional resource for all kind of publics to complement their sensorial experience. We also describe additional resources based on sounds that can also be employed to get deeper into this multisensorial experience. Finally, we summarize some of the activities and the context in which this new material has been used in the last 2 years.

This white paper responds to the Voyage 2050 Call for White Papers from the Science Programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) and argues that education, communication and public engagement (hereafter EPE) should have priority in the Voyage 2050 planning cycle. The ESA Science's Voyage 2050 missions promise insights into the big existential questions of our era: the prevalence of life in the Universe; the nature of space and time; and the intertwined nature of matter, energy and gravity. It is likely that innovations in the acquisition, handling and processing of vast data sets will drive these themes to scientific maturity in the next decades. They offer us a timely opportunity to underline the relevance of space sciences to everyday life and thinking. More generally, space science is maturing to the point where it contributes to every major aspect of our cultural discourse. Citizens need information, resources and opportunities to actively participate in that discourse, and ESA Science can provide these. This white paper is a modest attempt to support ESA Science improve its engagement with society. It focuses on issues and topics to improve ESA Science's Education and Public Engagement activities. It does not dwell on the topics that ESA already excels at; hence this White Paper provides a critical review of what should and could be improved. We believe ESA's Voyage 2050 programme teams have a responsibility to represent Europe's social and cultural diversity, and our suggestions are conceived in that spirit: to support ESA Science's complex task of engaging a hugely diverse audience in the complex issues of planning, building and operating fascinating space missions.

We present the final data from the spectroscopic survey of the ROSAT-ESO Flux-Limited X-ray (REFLEX) catalog of galaxy clusters. The REFLEX survey covers 4.24 steradians (34% of the entire sky) below a declination of 2.5 deg and at high Galactic latitude (|b| > 20 deg). The REFLEX catalog includes 447 entries with a median redshift of 0.08 and is better than 90% complete to a limiting flux fx = 3x10^{-12} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} (0.1 to 2.4 keV), representing the largest statistically homogeneous sample of clusters drawn from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) to date. Here we describe the details of the spectroscopic observations carried out at the ESO 1.5 m, 2.2 m, and 3.6 m telescopes, as well as the data reduction and redshift measurement techniques. The spectra typically cover the wavelength range 3600-7500 A at a FWHM resolution of ~14 A, and the measured redshifts have a total rms error of ~100 km s^{-1}. In total we present 1406 new galaxy redshifts in 192 clusters, most of which previously did not have any redshift measured. Finally, the luminosity/redshift distributions of the cluster sample and a comparison to the no-evolution expectations from the cluster X-ray luminosity function are presented.

A study of the galaxy distribution in the field of the elliptical galaxy NGC1600 has been undertaken. Although this galaxy is often classified as a member of a loose group, all the neighbouring galaxies are much fainter and could be taken as satellites of NGC1600. The number density profile of galaxies in the field of this galaxy shows a decline with radius, with evidence of a background at approximately 1.3 Mpc. The density and number density profile are consistent with that found for other isolated early-type galaxies. NGC1600 appears as an extended source in X-rays, and the center of the X-ray emission seems not to coincide with the center of the galaxy. The velocity distribution of neighbouring galaxies has been measured from optical spectroscopic observations and shows that the mean radial velocity is approximately 85 km/s less than that of NGC1600, indicating that the centre of mass could lie outside the galaxy. The velocity dispersion of the `group' is estimated at 429 km/s. The inferred mass of the system is therefore of the order of 10^14 solar masses, a value that corresponds to a large group. NGC1600 therefore shares some similarities, but is not identical to, the `fossil clusters' detected in X-ray surveys. Implications of this result for studies of isolated early-type galaxies are briefly discussed.

We present the catalogue of the REFLEX Cluster Survey providing information on the X-ray properties, redshifts, and some identification details of the clusters in the REFLEX sample. The catalogue describes a statistically complete X-ray flux-limited sample of 447 galaxy clusters above an X-ray flux of 3 10(-12) erg /s/cm**2 (0.1 to 2.4 keV) in an area of 4.24 ster in the southern sky. The cluster candidates were first selected by their X-ray emission in the ROSAT-All Sky Survey and subsequently spectroscopically identified in the frame of an ESO key programme. In addition to the cluster catalogue we also describe the complete selection criteria as a function of the sky position and the conversion functions used to analyse the X-ray data. These are essential for the precise statistical analysis of the large-scale cluster distribution. This data set is at present the largest, statistically complete X-ray galaxy cluster sample. Together with these data set we also provide for the first time the full three-dimensional selection function. The sample forms the basis of several cosmological studies, one of the most important applications being the assessment of the statistics of the large-scale structure of the universe and the test of cosmological models.

D/H in a new Lyman limit quasar absorption system at z=3.256 towards PKS1937-1009

We have identified a new Lyman limit absorption system towards PKS1937-1009, with log N(HI)=18.25 +/- 0.02 at z=3.256. It is suitable for measuring D/H, and we find a 68.3% confidence range for D/H of 1.6^{+0.25}_{-0.30} \times 10^{-5}, and a 95.4% range of 1.6^{+0.5}_{-0.4} \times 10^{-5}. Our result also exacerbates the scatter in D/H values around the mean primordial D/H.

We present an estimate of the bolometric X-ray luminosity - velocity dispersion L_x - sigma_v relation measured from a new, large and homogeneous sample of 171 low redshift, X-ray selected galaxy clusters. The linear fitting of log(L_x) - log(sigma_v) gives L_x = 10^{32.72 \pm 0.08} sigma^{4.1 \pm 0.3}_v erg s^{-1} h^{-2}_{50}. Furthermore, a study of 54 clusters, for which the X-ray temperature of the intracluster medium T is available, allows us to explore two other scaling relations, L_x -T and sigma_v -T. From this sample we obtain L_x \propto T^{3.1 \pm 0.2} and sigma_v \propto T^{1.00 \pm 0.16}, which are fully consistent with the above result for the L_x-sigma_v. The slopes of L_x -T and sigma_v -T are incompatible with the values predicted by self-similarity (L_x \propto T^{2} \propto σ_v^4), thus suggesting the presence of non-gravitational energy sources heating up the intracluster medium, in addition to the gravitational collapse, in the early stages of cluster formation. On the other hand, the result on log(L_x) - log(sigma_v) supports the self-similar model.

We present new GHRS observations of Lyman alpha absorption lines associated with a group of galaxies towards the QSO 1545+2101. We have identified eight distinct Lyman alpha absorption features in the spectrum of QSO 1545+2101 at a mean redshift of z=0.2648 with a velocity dispersion of 163 km/s. A group of galaxies is detected in the vicinity of this QSO at a mean redshift of z=0.2645 and velocity dispersion 239 km/s.
The identification of discrete absorption systems indicates that they arise in clouds of neutral hydrogen rather than in a diffuse intragroup medium. Our analysis suggests that the Lyman alpha absorption lines are associated with individual galaxies in the group, although a one-to-one relationship between absorbers and galaxies is difficult to establish in such a dense environment.

A new procedure for the reduction of "Carte du Ciel" plates is presented. A typical "Carte du Ciel" plate corresponding to the Bordeaux zone has been taken as an example. It shows triple exposures for each object and the modelling of the data has been performed by means of a non-linear least squares fitting of the sum of three bivariate Gaussian distributions. A number of solutions for the problems present in this kind of plates (optical aberrations, adjacency photographic effects, presence of grid lines, emulsion saturation) have been investigated. An internal accuracy of 0.1'' in x and y was obtained for the position of each of the individual exposures. The external reduction to a catalogue led to results with an accuracy of 0.16'' in x and 0.13'' in y for the mean position of the three exposures. A photometric calibration has also been performed and magnitudes were determined with an accuracy of 0.09 mags.

We present here new GHRS observations of Lyman-alpha absorption lines associated with groups or clusters toward the QSOs 1545+2101 and 0850+4400. In the first case we have identified at least eight distinct Lyman-alpha absorption features, with a mean redshift of <z> = 0.2648 \pm 0.0002 and a velocity dispersion of 163 \pm 57 km/s. We have also identified a group or cluster of galaxies in the vicinity of this QSO with a mean redshift of <z> = 0.2643 \pm 0.0004 and velocity dispersion 223 \pm 91 km/s . The spectrum of QSO 0850+4400, of poorer quality, reveals two Lyman-alpha absorption features at z=0.0909500 \pm 0.0000070 (which is just resolved) and z=0.0948215 \pm 0.0000090, separated by $\sim 1060 km/s. A group or cluster of galaxies is also present in the vicinity of the QSO line-of-sight with a mean redshift <z>=0.0901 \pm 0.0007 and velocity dispersion of 530 \pm 200 km/s. The results of this work establish that Lyman-alpha absorption can occur in denser than average galaxy environments, and that it arises in discrete objects spanning a velocity range similar to that of the cluster galaxies. Although a one-to-one relationship between absorbers and galaxies is difficult to establish in such a dense environment, the results obtained here are indeed consistent with the Lyman-alpha absorption lines being associated with individual galaxies also in groups and clusters. Moreover, the data shows clearly that line clustering takes place in the Lyman-alpha forest.

We report new HST and ground-based observations of a damped Lyman-alpha absorption system toward the QSO 0850+4400. The redshift of the absorption system is z = 0.163770 and the neutral hydrogen column density of the absorption system is log N = 19.81 cm**-2. The absorption system is by far the lowest redshift confirmed damped Lyman-alpha absorption system yet identified, which provides an unprecedented opportunity to examine the nature, impact geometry, and kinematics of the absorbing galaxy in great detail. The observations indicate that the absorption system is remarkable in three respects: First, the absorption system is characterized by weak metal absorption lines and a low metal abundance, possibly less than 4% of the solar metal abundance. This cannot be explained as a consequence of dust, because the neutral hydrogen column density of the absorption system is far too low for obscuration by dust to introduce any significant selection effects. Second, the absorption system is associated with a moderate-luminosity early-type S0 galaxy, although the absorption may actually arise in one of several very faint galaxies detected very close to the QSO line of sight. Third, the absorbing material moves counter to the rotating galaxy disk, which rules out the possibility that the absorption arises in a thin or thick co-rotating gaseous disk. These results run contrary to the expectation that low-redshift damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems generally arise in the gas- and metal-rich inner parts of late-type spiral galaxies. We suggest instead that mounting evidence indicates that low-redshift galaxies of a variety of morphological types may contain significant quantities of low metal abundance gas at large galactocentric distances.
